“Good hotel”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

So I stayed here for a big party some travel agency had organized. I was pleasantly surprised. The parking was a pain, they did not have enough for the amount of people there and I had to walk a lot to get to the hotel. Good rooms, no complaints.

The party was good. What I was most surprised about was the food. Very good food! they have these buffet style snacks (in between meals) with hot dogs, burgers and the like and they were good! But the real kicker was the breakfast, so many offerings!! It was very good. I would visit again.

The hotel is pretty nice but the rooms definitely need some renovation.
Breakfast buffet - really ncie with great choice of fruit, bread, eggs and veggies.
The pool area - perfect.
The beach area - well, it's really nice but don't expect it to be one of those white sand beaches. On this side of Panama sand is rather dark.
Staff was very nice, but needs to practice a little bit. The hotel got full during the weekend and they had some problems with keeping up.

We've been to a lot of resorts in Mexico, Punta Cana and Costa Rica.... we didn't think this one measured up for the price we paid. Firstly, the "garden view" room was actually facing the parking lot, had no balcony at all and had no character as far as décor.

Ok - so we didn't think that was such a big deal since we would be outside most of the time.

The lunch area by the pool was not your typical buffet style, but rather just hotdogs and burgers. If you wanted something better, you needed to go up to the main buffet. The main buffet is where we had dinner most nights. The food was mediocre at best, mostly over-cooked and not enough selection. Large birds hung out near the tables to grab food off of dishes left on the table. The Mediterranean restaurant was very good. I had the beef tenderloin and it was by far the best thing I ate the entire week. The Japanese was not very good and the cooks were obviously pretty new at it.

Drinks were not so great either. Small little cups and they did not make you an individual drink, rather a whole blender full that sat there until someone else ordered the same thing. They had pretty much 2 blender drinks on offer - pina colada and strawberry daiquiri. No banana mama, no bananas period. no fresh fruit, no fuss.

Loungers were quite uncomfortable, but it was nice to have the ability to put them in the water. Pools look much nicer online than in person. They are really quite small.

We enjoyed Panama and our tour of Panama City, the locks, the old town, etc. We enjoyed how nice and hot the weather was - especially for February! That was the main reason we chose Panama for vacation and the weather delivered beautiful days every day!

Overall - the resort was not worth the price paid, although it was ok just to enjoy the weather.

I would try the new Riu next time - it opens in April. They usually have much better food and rooms.

Sheraton Bijao is a fine place to unwind and relax. (mar14-mar21) Check in very easy, rooms good, cleaned well. Beach nice, no problem getting chairs, had some problems with jellyfish twice during the week. Food at the buffet every breakfast, lunch and dinner was good, did the los olivos and the steak ala cartes very good. Did the Panama Canal cruise booked from the resort, money well spent to get a first hand look on how the canal operates, two and a half hour bus ride though, breakfast and lunch served on the boat as you follow a huge ship through two sets of locks. Did two massages at the spa at the resort, very nice. The people at the resort, from the three young ladies that work at the front desk(6:30am-6:30pm) Cynthia at the piano, Maletza (waitress) at the buffet, Hugo and of course Jesus(assistant manager) who went out of his way to make sure everything went right, helping his people with even cleaning tables to setting them up for the next people, Well done and you have my respect. Will go back

Room Tip: I stayed in 2413, side of building showed condo building next door, try and get an even number room...

The Sheraton Bijao is a fine resort hotel. Nothing really special, but a nice place to unwind. Food is good, service is good, beach is nice. I would recommend it for a short visit, but I guess staying longer than 3 days boredom would set in.

Room Tip: do not choose seaview because you'll be awake 'till 01:00 due to musical entertainment

I have no complaints about the food. Always found something, must try the a la carte. They had quite the variety of alcohol. Staff is friendly. Always plenty of room by the pool but couldn't get chairs in the shade on the beach unless you got up at 6. The resort is very secluded at least 3 hours from airport and an hour for any excursions. We were disappointed to be there during winter fest, the group took over the resort and made our stay less present as there was no entertainment for us as they brought in their own, wish we would of been warned. Be carefull in the stairs by the pool, saw so many people trip including myself who was left with no skin on my toe. The room was very spacious and clean although our tub leaked but the view was fabulous.

Back round of resort experience: I have been to 3,4 and 5 stars in Cuba (Varadero and Cayo Coco) 5 stars in Mexico (Mayan Riviera and Cozumel), 4 star in Bahamas (Nassau) and 5 star in Peurto Plata, DR.....Needless to say, I have done a fair share of variable resort hopping.

As a previous poster mentioned, when considering this resort, the buyer should be very aware that it is AT LEAST a 2.5 hour bus ride from the Airport to the Bijao-after a 5 hour plane trip, it was a long travel day....once the new airport is finished (20 mins away from Santa Clara), the trip would be less exhausting.

Our trip was booked through Sunwing for a friend's wedding, even though this review should only cover the resort itself, i feel it is necessary to comment on Sunwing-as they are a provider and respresentative/parter with the Sheraton Bijao...I will try to not rant too much about Sunwing but it must be mentioned that they did a very poor job communicating with the Hotel about certain things...such as, suite availability for the bride and groom: Not for nothing, sunwing, but these two people just hooked you up with 50 guests at at least $1300 a head-the least they could do would be to ensure that a Suite was provided for the bride and groom without any headaches-and there were many headaches to be had due to this....Furthermore, we were unable to pre-book our seats on the plane and an oversight with the travel insurance coverage could have been horrible-lack of organization and care on SUNWING's behalf-but honestly, what should we expect-it is very well known that sunwing doesnt really care once you are there and you have forked over your money...my advice, if you are set on this location, try to work with a travel rep that gives a poop and has a reputation for customer satisfaction.

SHERATON BIJAO: LOCATION/ACCOMMODATIONS/SERVICE/FOOD...etc

Check-in was a breeze, not problems or comments at all.
LOCATION: 2.5 hours from the AIrport, informative tour guide on shuttle to hotel, beautiful large beach, ocean is murkey at best and warnings nearly everyday of Sting Rays, Jellyfish, Strong current-these didnt stop most, for me it did, but I am sure I would have been fine, a couple people got stung by Jelly Fish, but not serious in the least. There is an Xtreme rental stand for wave runners, ATVs, bananna boats etc, but never really saw many people utlizing these, and from what I heard-expensive, not my thing, but available for people who want to be Xtreme.

GROUNDS: Well maintained, many pools, getting a chair one way or anotehr was never a problem....It would be helpful to have a closer bar near the pools near the buffett, there is one but it doesnt open until 6 p.m.-so you have to either go up 2 flights in side to the piano bar, or down to flights (or a slide ride) to the Pool bar....annoyyyyyyyyyying! That aside, the grounds were a good size, not to big and decently spread out.

FOOD: Buffett was comparable to that in the DR-i was always happy with the selection (100 times better than Cuba) so i was fine with that..... We went to Los Olivios (Mediterranean) and Sakura (Japanese) a couple times-both were a nice experience, the seafood at Sakura was AMAZING....In summation-the food was good enough...

DRINKS: STRONG, which is great, but a few times i asked for just a little bit of booze...but there are a variety of drinks they can make-Mojitos were delish but they ran out of mint a couple times, so couldnt get one everyday or all day...some bartenders were nicer and more relaxed than others. I tipped $10 right off the bat at the swim up one day, only to never see that bartender there for the rest of the week-so my plan back fired. There was one really annoying guy who worked both the Piano bar and the Swim up who, I think, Hated his job and got annoyed if you asked for more than 2 drinks at a time or something blended-he didnt really care-but I guess he didnt care about a potential tip so boo hoo to him!

ACCOMMODATIONS:
We emailed one of the managers before we arrived that we were in a garden view but hoped to get placed in one of the better ones (not to low and not right in front of the buffet), this request was gratefully acknowledged and we were given one of the preferred guest rooms-so we had a full size balcony...room was comparable to most I have stayed in, comfy bed, good size, no real complaints at all-i never care that much though because i only use the room for sleeping...However, towels were not changed everyday, even when we left dirty wet ones on the floor and we didnt get water everyday either-we are pretty easy going so it wasnt a big deal and I am confident that a call downstairs would have provided us with more towels and water, but we didnt care enough to call down.

SERVICE-standard, most very friendly, they are understaffed at the bars, so i dont feel like the staff themselves were unfriendly, just perhaps, over worked and stressed out-so another bar tender would have helped them out and provide better service.

EXCURSIONS/ETC

We opted out of the city and canal tour, after a 3 hour bus ride from the airport 3 days before the scheduled day-trip, we were not keen on spending 6 hours of a day on a bus...so we decided to stay back, but friends who went said it only took 1.5 hours to the city and they really enjoyed the trip-so might be worth it to some!

We hired a van taxi to take 6 of us to El Valle-which cost $140 all in, so better than the organized tour and we could just tell him where to take us-spoke little english to match our litte Spanish-but he was very friendly, fast and great! I highly recommend you do the same and head up there, it was about a 30-45 minute drive but the scenery was amazing, i really enjoyed it there, nice break away from the hot sun and resort folk-lots to do, some waterfalls, a zoo and you MUST go to Casa De Lordes for lunch-it was BEAUTIFUL and scrumptious food.

We also went on a drive with our friend to Pipas beach bar/restaurant, about a 20 minute drive, close to the Royal DeCameron-this is where they were holding their wedding (which was insanely beautiful and amazing), i recommend getting out and going there for lunch and drinks-everyone who works there is crazy nice and love their jobs!

There is a store on the property with a few souviner things, books (obviously left behind by other guests and a price tag slapped on) and anything else you might need, they have a lot, cheaper than the stores in DR, Bahamas etc....it was good to have there for sure.

Now...on to the only issue that really did effect most of our trip. There was a virus going around the resort...it started with one person 2 days in and by the end of the week about 40 some-odd people part of our wedding group got it (some twice), most vomitted for 6-12 hours followed by Diareha...GROSS- and it spread like wildfire-apparently it was the Norwalk virus (same as the ones that go around cruise ships). Now, by no means am i necesarily blaming the hotel for the virus-but they certainly did not know how to handle and contain it. It is LAUGHABLE that the staff said it was because of drinking-because 2 kids under the age of 2 got it, as if they drink!!!!!!!!!! and my better half got it the day we returned (48 hour incubation period). Norwalk virus is caused by ingesting feces (GROSS I KNOW) so it COULD have been a kitchen staff who didnt wash their hands, or simply a guest who used the bathroom and then grabbed a piece of fruit, or picked up a serving spoon..(or use the punch ladle as a testing spoon, and putting it back in the bowl, a large shout out to the guest seen doing this!!!!SICKO)
What the hotel didnt do was make sure it didnt spread-they would go in one room and clean up vomit, not wearing gloves and then going to the next room covered with germs and spreading it around.

I know for sure it wasnt food poisoning so it was a complete one-off but the managers and staff should educate themselves on sanitation to resolve a virus spreading....

All in all, would I go back? meh! Once the new airport is built and the price was right...maybe...but i would rather stay in Panama city and visit the carribean side....i prefer that anyway, but i came back feeling rested, tanned and no huge complaints.
