We just spent two nights at Lancaster's and really enjoyed our visit. It was inexpensive (for being so far from a town!) and well-maintained. The room had a twin bed and a double bed, a lamp, and an overhead light, and all linens were provided. There were electrical outlets in the room, but no heat. It's been relatively warm there so we didn't miss the heat all that much. There are shared bathrooms and showers, but we had no problem getting into them when needed. Check out the Golden Saloon next door for a good breakfast before hiking, and a nice dinner at the end of the day. It seems to be where everyone goes to hang out.
Lancaster's backpacker motel is owned and operated by the same people who operate Ma Johnson's in McCarthy. The properties are across the "main street" from each other. Ma Johnson's seemed very nice, but if you'd like to save a lot of money while staying in McCarthy, Lancaster's is an excellent option.
