We had a relative visit from the lower-48 and although I have been in Alaska for over 40 years, the two of us chose to do the one day float trip that goes from McCarthy and ends at the confluence of the Chitina River. Transport back to McCarthy is by way of "bush plane" and a short sight seeing trip provided by Wrangell Mountain Air. The trip starts down stream of the Kennicott Glacier on the Kennicott River and ultimately joins the Nizina River before ending at the Chitina River. This is a beautiful trip with Class III water as you float through the Nizina Canyon. Each raft is capable of carrying four people in addition to your professional river guide. All of the gear is provided by Copper Oar -- all you need to do is show up. Plan on getting wet, but plan on having fun. Half way through the trip you will stop on a gravel bar and be served a scrumptious lunch in a breathtaking setting. You will have time to scout around for pretty river rocks and to take pictures of friends and scenery. After taking out at the Chitina River confluence, Wrangell Mountain Air will fly you and your party back to the McCarthy airstrip where a van will bring you into town. This is a highly enjoyable trip and the people at Copper Oar are friendly, safety conscious, and fun to be with.

The final day of our McCarthy adventure ended with Copper Oar's team of Dale and Eric navigating our way down the Kennicott, Nazina and Chitina rivers. This was a very relaxing way to enjoy the stunning scenery. Lunch was delicious and expertly prepared by our guides. The flight back was fantastic with amazing views of Mt Blackburn, the Root and Kennicott glaciers and the stairway icefall, not to mention McCarthy and Kennicott. All in all, a wonderful end to our McCarthy trip.

Hello Katheryn!
Thanks so much for the great review. It was so fun to have you for all those days (THREE days in a row of ice climbing followed by the rafting trip - one tough gal!). Hope to see you this coming year!

This rafting and flightseeing back to McCarthy was one of my favorite experiences during my 2013 vacation. We were well taken care of from start to finish. Scenery was fantastic, but best of all was the flight back over where we had rafted and then flying over the gorgeous glacier at Kennecott and the area we had visited for four days. Watching the planes fly in for the flight and then taking off from the island in the middle of the river was a big kick for this senior citizen. I was so grateful for an adventure that even I could take.

Our family took the one-day raft/flightsee trip with Copper Oar. The guides and pilot were excellent and the scenery outstanding. On our lunch break our guides set up a buffet table (with tablecloth, dishes, napkins, great food) and camp stools for each guest. We felt safe on the plane that picked us up on the river bank. The "flightsee" was short but the scenery (river, canyon, glacier, icefall, mountains, former Kennicott mining town) is one-of-a-kind. The only disappointment was that we did not see much wildlife on the raft trip, but Copper Oar can't help that.

We actually did a package that included an all-day glacier hike (which, for us, was even better than the raft trip) and a tour of the main old mining building (which was also excellent).

After we had arranged the package, Copper Oar sent us detailed information about what to wear and what to bring.

All highly recommended.

(There are some other options for the flightseeing. We ended up in a van with three people who had done a longer flightsee tour of the glaciers, mountains and icefall. Based on their reaction, we will be adding that to our list when we go back.)
