OK, so I guess it's not saying a whole lot that it was the best meal in Alaska as it can be hard to find decent restaurants in the state. However, the food here was excellent! A great value considering how delicious it was and the high quality. I thought the service was fantastic too. Our waiter took very good care of us. We didn't feel rushed and he made sure everything was good without being in our face too often.

I would definitely recommend this place and am glad we splurged (it is not cheap) on this terrific meal and experience.

Glen is the best server I have ever seen. The fine dining restaurant is a true gem in the rough! The chef really knows how to amaze. The tasting dinner and other items on the menu are truly delicious! McCarthy is a great place to visit.

Having a great meal is wonderful, but when you're in the middle of nowhere it's even better. White table cloths, wine lists - unexpected in this little seasonal town. It's priced accordingly, but appropriate for the quality. They were great with our 4 kids too (ages 5-10). They let them order from the bar menu (ribs, burgers) while we had salmon & scallops. The waiter was fantastic. He'd been coming there for several years & shared lots of great stories about the building, town, history, etc. Don't miss it!

It was hard to decide whether to rate this restaurant "poor" or "average." We had expected so much because of the other reviews. In fact, we went out of our way to eat at this restaurant. We made reservations well in advance, but the restaurant had only a few other tables occupied when we ate there. We had expected a nice, romantic setting -- not so. It was brightly lit and had a fairly cold feel, particularly with all of the empty tables. You could see into the kitchen with a very harsh fluorescent light. The wine list was extensive, but very expensive. Several of the wines were very old, which could be OK if they were stored correctly, but we decided not to chance it and ordered one of the younger wines. The main problem was that the food simply did not work. The flavors were with muddled or clashed. One of us had scallops that were served on the side of a plate with some type of soup in the middle. I am not for sure what that is about? On a positive side, the cheese board was good and well presented. Next time in town I would probably have a burger at one of the more casual places in town. This restaurant was certainly not worth the cost.
