We stayed at the Wessex last weekend for our annual Modern Linedancing weekend. From the moment we checked in to the time we checked out, we could not fault anything about this hotel.

Joanna, the Restaurant Manager, couldn't do enough for us and took a lot of time to show us round the restaurant and ballroom and discuss the meal and seating arrangements for our group.

The meals were all served by Joanna and her very friendly and efficient staff and were hot, tasty and plentiful, with a good choice at every meal.

The rooms all appeared to be clean, spacious and comfortable, with modern decor. We were given a posh room, with an enormous four-poster bed and a jacuzzi (which unfortunately we never had time to use!) There was also an efficient lift, which ran smoothly between floors (not always the case in some hotels)

The ballroom was very spacious with a good floor and a pleasant bar area, and water stations were provided when we had our morning workshops. There was also a balcony to one side, which we made good use of as it was such a hot weekend.

All the staff were so helpful and friendly and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for any of them. Other hotels would do well to follow their example.

The Clarks Village, just a few hundred yards away, was an added bonus; and there are lots of interesting and historic places nearby.

We took 46 dancers away for this weekend and didn't receive a single complaint or adverse comment from any of them. Most of them said that it was the best weekend we had organised and several asked us how we had come across this "gem" of a hotel.

Needless to say, we have already tentatively booked the same weekend for next year and cannot recommend the Wessex highly enough.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel which was very quiet - apart from the noise from the chickens...

Having visited Street on numerous occasions over the past few years, this was the first time we have stayed at the Wessex, having been put off in the past by the tired exterior. In fact it turned out to be one of the best hotels in the area.

The triple room was large and spotlessly clean, with a great bathroom (fantastic shower and lovely toiletries) and separate toilet. The food in the large, inviting restaurant was hot, tasty and beautifully presented and served by friendly, efficient and extremely helpful staff. The breakfast was great, consisting of a cold buffet, with hotfood available to order.

My only criticism was that the third bed in our room was at the end of its useful life. The mattress was a bit lumpy and the bed creaked and groaned at the slightest movement - ok for the
one night we spent at the hotel but had we been staying for longer, I would have requested a replacement, which I have been assured, would have been forthcoming.

This is a great hotel, in the process of continuing renovation and fantastic value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel will be quieter

Stayed here on one of their three night spring breaks with half board. In hot weather, was glad to be able to park under cover and to be only 5 mins walk from the Clarks village. Arrived very hot and tired at the same time as a coach party, but the reception was friendly and helpful, even running up to see if our room was ready, which it was.
The room was really big, with twin beds separated by a table and two chairs. There was also a desk with good lighting, tea making facilities, a wardrobe with drawers, and a large fan. The ensuite was also large with the toilet separate. Everything was spotless and the beds very comfortable. We were grateful for the fan as it was very hot.
Meals were served in the restaurant - service was quick and cheerful, and the food good, especially the vegetables which were lovely.
Altogether amazing value for money, a clean, comfortable and well equipped room with good food. Would definitely stay here again.

Don't be put off by the tired exterior of this hotel. My wife and I had a great weekend there, the staff were warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was excellent and all served pipeing hot. The location is great being on the high street within walking distance of Clarksville village and good transport links to wells etc. we will definately revisit.

Unexpected allocation of the Four Poster/ Jacuzzi Room, proved to be a disadvantage. The bathroom plumbing was abysmal - warm/hot water only from the hand shower and fittings loose.Partly attended to by staff, but no real fix.Bed too big for room.An ordinary double would probably have been better! It was quiet at the back.
However, staff were affable, the 6' bed comfortable, the dining room (Wessex Suite) was very good, and the food good especially the main course. The refurbishment must have been a long time ago - it is still 80's style, and the public area doors are grubby, though the room was clean.
Overall advice - check your room thoroughly first!

Room Tip: Quiter at the rear. Ordinary double seems best, but check all functions carefully.
