“Consistently good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

We have visited the restaurant four times in the late afternoon and evening, without booking, and have been accommodated without a problem. The food has been consistently good, and the vegetables are worth having and not the usual creamed spinach, or similar sloppy fare. The service is not too bad considering all of the waitresses look very young - they are all very pleasant and smiling, which makes up for any oversights. If you eat inside your table will have a tablecloth, which makes a positive difference to the overall ambience. We will visit this restaurant again.

“Delicious seafood dishes!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

After living in Harties for about 10 months now, we have been curious about Caravela because we drive past it quite often and now we have finally had dinner there. And def not for the last time!
Strangely enough we got a bit of an 'Asian feeling' when we entered due to the decorations, but besides the sushi items, the menu does look likes there's a lot of Portuguese influences. Especially the seafood dishes were great, but the meat and chicken also looked very tasteful. Our waitress was friendly and knew all the items on the menu, which is sadly enough quite rare in South African restaurants.
We'll go back there soon for sure!

“Anyone welcome”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

On a very busy Mothers day they accommodated us at the last minute! It has a relaxed family atmosphere. The food was really great- worth the wait! Surprise was a friendly waitress and was helpful and made an effort to be there when we needed her on this busy lunch service. We' ll be going again.

“Even the Portuguese eat here !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2013 via mobile

We chose this restaurant based on other TripAdvisor reviews though there are very few of them.
Finding the place is ridiculously easy if you give them a call, as they are just off the main road (R104) from Joburg going towards the tunnel opposite the shopping centre where the Pick n Pay is. The gps takes you to the correct location but from the road you can't see the restaurant due to the vegetation so you wander about aimlessly.

The restaurant itself looks quite plain with a 70's feel to it right down to the colour scheme of the Portuguese flag and the printed vinyl tablecloths. The 'outside' area is technically outside of the physical restaurant and would have been a verandah had it not been completely enclosed, so you're not really outside. The seating here is pub type wooden benches.
Inside, the restaurant is fully air conditioned and is not as bright as the outside area. There is a lot of decor which looks like it's need added over the years from paintings to wooden model ships.
The chairs are VERY substantial, taking one back to an era before aluminium was widely used.

What have new great comfort was that there were a lot of Portuguese patrons. This is a great thing as they know their own cuisine better than a non Portuguese person would, so if they support the place, the food ought to be good and it was !

Portions are a good size with ingredients that taste and look fresh. There's nothing worse than ordering food in a restaurant and getting something that looks like it has congealed on the plate. Happily this establishment isn't one of those.

They had octopus salad on the menu that happily was real octopus and both the meat and chicken dishes were very tasty. The variety is good and they have many traditional Portuguese dishes.
Their chicken livers were juicy and tasty.
The service was average for a South African restaurant with waitresses who are friendly but sometimes go missing in action.

About the only complaints I have is that they tend to use a little too much salt in their meals and the waitresses discourage patrons from going for the 'hot' peri peri. I found the 'mild' to be too mild.

The drinks selection is also very good and the overall cost of the meal is reasonable. A meal for 3 including mains, drinks and starters came in at under R 600 including tips.

I would certainly visit again.

“Enjoyable family lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

It is sometimes better to expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised than to expect a lot and be disappointed. I read so many great reviews about the restaurant's food that I booked it for a family lunch for adults and children. On the plus side it is a very relaxing family restaurant, not romantic at all. Nice soft music and excellent waiters. The menu is huge with a nice selection for the children as well. The children's meals were enormous and very tasty. I have never seen them eat so much of their food. The service was excellent even on a packed Sunday and we didn't wait for anything. On the downside, the food. I was expecting excellent seafood as that was what most reviewers raved about. At our table sardines were ordered. Instead of nice crisp sardines it almost looked like these were boiled and even though tasty it was not great. The trinchado had a very tasty mushroom sauce but the meat was very tough. The espetada was tasty. I had the seafood platter for one and my husband the 12 queen prawns. Again tasty, but average and I could have had same and more at a local franchise seafood restaurant. I would suggest a side of some garlic and lemon butter sauce as I found the prawns and kingklip on my plate very dry. To end, go for a nice afternoon but do not go just for the food.
