“Hiking on cretaceous rocks with alpine flora (summer)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

What an incredible experience this is IN THE SUMMER (in the winter these are just covered with snow allowing for ski slopes) ! Walk all the way up, or better, take the lift from the bottom of Flaine to Grandes Platières (small fee). Hours of walking though the most incredible rock sceneries, Europe's largest 'Lapiaz'. These cretaceous rocks also contain numerous fossils. It's called a 'stone desert' but rain and wind have eroded the limestone layers creating cracks and holes representing different kinds of habitat for many very small flowers or trees. The Alpine ibex, a large goat-type mammal, also lives here.
follow the tracks indicated yellow or red & white for some great hiking experience.
