“Excellent location but food was a disappointment”
Reviewed 22 May 2009

Booked to stay in this place based on trip advisor reviews. Stayed a week on half board basis. On arrival about 8 am on a beautiful day, was impressed by the location and welcome from monique who was like a manager of the place. she provided us with breakfast and had to wait about an hour in the lobby which had dirty couches and lots of insects that we both got bitten severely.
Once we got to our premier room, i was very impressed since the room was excellent. The beach is the highlight of the place as mentioned by all the reviewers. Excellent little beach but when tide comes in, the beach area does become little but there was no problems to find a space anytime of the day since it is not crowded at all.
The problems with the place was that its lobby and dining room needs upgrading since they are showing their age and dining table cloths were sometimes dirty and lots of insects including ants which is fine everywhere but not in the dining table.Definitely need some kind of insect repellent such as the one they have in their kitchen.
Also my main complaint was that breakfast option is very very limited. You have a platter of 3 fruits, then choice of egg or cereal or pancake and anything else such as bacon, sausages etc are extra at 1.50 Euros each!!! Also for dinner, you can choose you main course which was by far the best the hotel provides since the main courses were huge and very good BUT you cant choose the starter or dessert since they were chef's choice and on most days, we either left the starter and/or dessert unfinished and trust me i am not a picky eater. I dont think tinned fruits in my opinion can be classed as dessert!!!
It is such a shame that the dining was poor since otherwise this is a fantastic place. The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble particularly at the reception with monique and alison. The service from all the other staff was excellent but not exactly with a smile all the time. The provide beach towels and free internet if needed at the reception. Also to note is that they have a car hire place in the resort (soleil cars) and you will defintely need a car to see places since you are a long way from any shops. Overall if you want a quite place which is miles away from anywhere with an excellent beach and good service for a reasonable price, i would definitely think about this place but be warned about the dining. If you want good food, i would recomment the anse soleil cafe next door which opens at midday and provides excellent food till late. I would recommend a torch since if you are in the premier rooms, you have to walk on a narrow path which is not well lit and you will step on insects, large snails, lizards etc and definitely take insect repellant.

this is an unusual hotel.
it's not the hotel that the website links to for pictures or facilities.
the welcome was unhelpful and unwelcoming.
we were on half board and because we didn't arrive til late had no choice of meals.(evening meals have to be booked at breakfast)
the room (11) was very good, and the beach was idyllic - although it rained. when it rained no one helped with any suggestions as to what else to do etc.
breakfast was plentiful.
the service at dinner was by one waitress - serving up to 24 people with meals and drinks - and one cook. they often appeared to be in conflict and people got the wrong meals etc. at one point the chef walked out of the kitchen, grabbed our room number (from the table) and returned to the kitchen without a word!the food was mediocre at best. Some guests seemed to be refused any food because they hadn't pre-ordered
It could have been a good hotel, but the staff and the guests (mainly french and german) all seemed depressed, and the ambience was gloomy
we were glad to only stay 3 nights.
There is a very good cafe on the beach (but only open lunchtime in january), and a huge 4 seasons hotel is about to open which may well overwhelm the beach etc - beware because big changes may result.

We loved it here - not the friendliest welcome, but after that things got better and better.
The room was smallish but fine - and what a view.
We were in room 3 and so were just a few yards from the beach - we spent hours just sat there looking and enjoying the view.
Beachcomber is a quiet place - very peaceful and relaxing.
All the rooms have a good view and the beach is just perfect... and pretty quiet. White sand, just incredibly beautiful views and we went snorkelling there for the first time - and we'll never forget it.
Within 10 steps of the shore we were surrounded by lots and lots of the most beautiful fish imaginable.
In fact, the wildlife here was awesome - madagascan fodys everywhere, seychelles sunbirds nesting outside our room, fruit bats all about from late afternoon, rockskippers, sally lightfoot crabs, green backed herons, white tailed tropicbirds, green geckos, greater frigatebirds.... it goes on and on....
Food in the restaurant was good, and the service got more and more friendly and helpful.
So all in all, peaceful place in paradise.
We want to stay here again.

Anse Soleil has a perfect beach with soft sand and no coral. The water gets deep and there are sometimes small waves (unlike lots of Seychelles beaches) The snorkeling is excellent. It is off the beaten track, so not too busy.

The Beachcomber is a small hotel right on the beach. Our room was spacious and comfortable and had a beautiful bathroom.(The shower was bigger than the whole of our bathroom at home!)

The food was OK and not too expensive. The only downside was that we had to place our dinner order by lunchtime and, when we came to eat, the service was quite rushed. This is because the staff all want to get home to bed, and it's like that in most places in the Seychelles.

There is a cafe on the beach and next to the hotel that serves good food, especially fish. It is busy at lunch time with day visitors to Anse Soliel. Last orders are at 7 o'clock in the evening, but the service is not rushed so you can relax and enjoy.

Comments: Anse Soliel Beachcomber is almost a perfect place to stay. We stayed here for 6 nights during our first time to the Seychelles.

The Beachcomber is a romantic hideaway for anyone looking for an escape to paradise.
The hotel is tucked away at the end of a small peninsular on the SouthWest coast - the"sunset coast" - a few kilometres away from the main road where the bus passes.

The road leading to the hotel is pretty steep, narrow and bumpy, so most guests hire a small car to go exploring the rest of Mahe island.
It is also possible to hire a taxi. Taxi from/to the airport (about 35 minutes) may cost 150 Rupees or between 15 and 30 Euros - all depending on the driver and yourself. A full day trip around the island costs around 100 Euros. The hotel is about a 45-minutes drive from the capital Victoria (taxicost 250 Rupees or 25 Euros). Bus is flat 3 Rupees anywhere on the island.

The resort now has 14 rooms - 5 standard and 5 superior and 4 premier - all with its own patio (private terrace) with table, chairs and sea view.
The new rooms no. 12-15 are in two new bungalows.

Our room (nr 15) was very nice, there were new tropical flowers on the bed and in the bathroom every day. We also stayed one night in room No. 8 which had its veranda above the boulders.
The rooms were kept very clean. We had air-con, TV, even a DVD-player, a large bathroom, fridge, water boiler w/teabags and Nescafe, etc. Also a bottle of drinking water in the fridge on the arrival day.

The hotel is cosy and intimate with personal service. They have a free WiFi Internet
connection if you bring a laptop. According to the owner, Alison, they will convert the reception into an Internet room for guests, when the new office building is completed. They also have a kayak and snorkeling equipent you may use free of cost .

The beach, just a few paces from the hotel, is one of the safest and beautiful beaches on Mahe. It has soft pale cream sand and huge granite boulders at the edges is.
You can almost step off your own private veranda on the silky coral beach, where you can laze, swim or snorkel at both high and low tides.

There is a forest behind the beach and the sea is very warm turquoise green. It is a beautiful place. You can also watch giant fruit bats fly over the forest at sunset!
There is a restaurant on the beach next to the hotel, where people enjoy lunch or dinner.

The breakfasts were nice and every morning we had a plate of exotic fruits and then a choice of either pancakes or eggs and toast. You also get fruit juice and tea or coffee. The restaurant is open air, but we did not need insect repellent in the evenings. For lunch there was a choice of light snacks like toasted sandwiches and chips.

The dining area is a good choice and serves local creole cuisine and plenty of popular seafood dishes and a good choice of plainer dishes if you don’t like spicy food.
There a small bar area within the dining area and there is a small lounge area with a TV-set and some bookshelves with various books and magazines.
Dinner is served between 1900 and 2100 hrs. After nine the resort becomes very quiet.

The staff was very friendly and helpful to us.

The hotel area has motion sensors for lights outside at night, but we recommend
taking a small torch with you though, the car park is very dark, and so are the roads and most other hotel/restaurant car parks.

We definitely recommend this hotel, it is a lovely hotel in an amazing location.

This was a lovely surprise as it met all the internet descriptions and more! The beach was secluded and beautiful, really white sands and very good snorkelling in the little bay there. They were very friendly and the owner was around to chat to the guests, which was a nice touch. Little things like a fresh water footbath to rinse your feet after being on the beach and the provision of beach towels made it very good value for money in comparison to other hotels on the island. Food was fresh and well cooked and the chef came out to see if you enjoyed it!
Would love to go back and recommend highly as a romantic getaway.
