Any visit to Jiaxing must include a visit to Nanhu (South Lake), home of the signing of the Communist Manifesto. The story is that Mao and other revolutionaries were about to sign the document declaring themselves a party in Xintandi (Shanghai) when they got word that the French were on to them. They escaped, agreeing to meet one month later in Jiaxing. There, they sailed into the middle of the lake, sure that they were not followed, and signed the document. Thus was the party born. The junk is still there, tethered to a small island that is accessible by small ferries which also take you to the west side of the lake where you can climb a 7 floor pagoda for terrific views of South Lake and the city.
