Adi means the first. As the name says, this kshetram is supposed the house the first lingam which was made by the Lord Shiva himself. It is one of the Padal Petra Sthalam and this temple would be the very ideal place to start a pilgrimage.

Good for religious visits. Close to the market and hence always crowded.
Saw the temple elephant and bought blessings for Rs. 2 each :)

Historically significant temple which will be moderately crowded on weekends. This temple is glorified in thevaram hymns. Lord muruga in this temple is glorified in Arunagirinathar's Thirupughazh. While here, don't forget to visit Sarangapani temple (a divya desam).

This temple is situated in proper town of Kumbakonam. It is one of the ancient & big temples of south India. The main deity is KUMBESWARAR & MANGALANAYAKI.
As per puranam,God Bramah has stored all his requirements to create a new yuga in a KUMBAM( (POT) After the demolition of the previous yuga Bramha tried to open the kumbam for creation of a new Yuga but he could not open.
Lord siva has taken the form of a Hunter & broke the mumbam with his arrow & helped Bramha to create a new Yuga.
There are other famous temples near by such as SARANGAPANI temple one of 108 divyasthalams.

Legend says this is where Lord Shiva made Linga from Sand by his own hands and started new Yuga. Since Linga is formed by Sand there is no Abishegam for Linga in this Temple. Most of the Temple area is occupied by Shops, Temple has a very calm & peaceful atmosphere. Must See!!!
