Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 September 2013

My wife and I spent two nights at the lovely, peaceful Villa Sumbing Indah hotel located in Kalegen, about 20 minutes’ drive up the slope of the Sumbing volcano west and north of Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. This hotel has five lovely rooms along side a sparkling clean swimming pool surrounded on three sides by rice paddies and with a lovely view over the Magelang valley. The hotel is about 45 minutes from Borobudur, an hour a fifteen minutes from Yogyakarta and a couple of hours from Prambanan. It thus provides reasonable access to these points of interest and also to the Dieng Plateau region. The delightful owner, Rubiyanti Lavaud, who runs the hotel’s day-to-day activities along with her French-born husband, is happy to arrange for transportation to any / all of these attractions as well as pick-up / drop-off at local airports such as Yogyakarta (two hours) or Semarang (three and a half hours). The hotel has a very nice restaurant and the cost of the overnight includes an excellent breakfast served at your table. Our room (the smaller, two-person villa) had an exterior porch by the pool, a living room with couch, TV and bar connecting to the bedroom. The walls / ceiling are beautifully finished in bamboo and matting. The bed is furnished with mosquito nets. The bathroom is comfortable with plenty of hot water. Everything is scrupulously clean and the décor is lovely.

This is the place to choose if you are looking for peace, tranquility and natural beauty, and do not require proximity to a city center or a large hotel with many amenties. Magelang is just 20 minutes away. Given the traffic snarls, noise and unrestricted development overtaking all the main roads of Central Java, we greatly appreciated the hotel’s location. We took walks in the morning through Kalegen village and on side roads into the rice fields, enjoying views of the Sumbing volcano and the terraced agriculture. We watched farmers plowing the fields with buffalo and taking the ducks out for feeding as the sun rose, to a chorus of early morning bird-calls. The hotel has a small but lovely garden (with fish pond) at one end of the pool.

We discovered Villa Sumbing Indah through trip advisor (while at another hotel in Salatiga which we wanted to leave) but you can reach Ruby at 62(country code)-81328042721 (for additional numbers see website), villa.sumbing.indah@hotmail.fr or http://villa-sumbing-indah-id.com.

Lovely setting on the hill above Borobodur town. Great views of Mt Merapi
We had the end room round the corner from the pool, with three separate rooms + bathroom.
The room was clean and comfortable. Wi-fi was good.
Dinner was good though the menu was a bit restricted.
Generally the hotel is very peaceful, though we were woken by chanting in the night from a mosque.
The owner is very friendly

Our family very much enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The staff kept the room clean, provided food efficiently and sorted our local tours well. Our children found that the hotel is quite close to a very busy road so when we tried to do family walks - the back roads were really gorgeous - the first 10 minutes or so were not very pleasant. That being said, we very much enjoyed being based in the country for our visit to Borobodur.

Initially we chose this spot because of its proximity with the Borobudur and the Dieng plateau. Coming from Bali by car, Villa Sumbing Indah was the first place we REALLY enjoyed on Java ; apart from Dr. Harry’s surf camp in Pacitan !! It’s setting is lovely, just outside of Magelang and only a short and nice drive from Borobudur (ask the owner for the itinerary). As it is located on the Sumbing volcano it is also a lot more pleasant in terms of freshness, than in the valleys around or Jogja. (Sleeping without air-co becomes a treat). The couple that run the place are adorable and will try to help you in any way. Nice hikes around the place ; even if they are a little overpriced. Lots of treats on the menu for this part of Java where you quickly get fed up with the very few local dishes. The rooms are lovely and comfortable ; with good beds, window shutters, mosquito nets, water fountain, etc., etc., and unusually well equipped bathrooms for this area, with warm water galore, real shower head and fair pressure on the water. We personally have trouble understanding how people can give this place less than a very good rating… unless this kind of rating only applies to places such as the Waldorf.

Our experience at Villa Sumbing Indah during our stay in May 2013 was fairly pleasant.

Service rendered by the staff from the moment accommodation arrangements were being corresponded via email to the checking out of the resort was very good.

The resort is located amidst a rural setting, about 1.5 hours drive from Yogyakarta's Adisucipto International Airport. Prambanan Temple (which is about 0.5 hour drive from the Adisucipto
International Airport) is about 2 hours drive from the resort and the Borobudur Temple is about 0.75 hour drive (given the pretty smooth traffic conditions of 4am) from the resort. Hence, if arriving at Yogyakarta in the earlier part of the day, visiting the Prambanan Temple before heading to the resort might be a good idea (sunset at Yogyakarta and Borobudur was observed to be at about 1730hrs).

Transport to and from the airport as well as to the places of interest such as the Prambanan Temple, Borobudur Temple and Kaliadem Highland was arranged by the resort at about IDR 1,300,000 (USD130) without including carpark fees. Although this was a convenient means to move around the places of interest (especially when flagging a taxi at the resort's isolated location seemed to be virtually impossible), the price is rather high since it appears that an airport-resort-airport round-trip metered taxi fare would amount to just about IDR 300,000 (USD30).

The resort has only a couple of villas and most of it seem to be just just a few steps away from a common swimming pool, giving a rather exclusive feel. The rooms have no air-conditioning
but came with stand-fans in the bedroom that kept the room comfortably cooled. The bathroom was installed with rain showers and although piped with hot water, the hot water seemed to be intermittently disrupted during baths. Towels were generally clean and basic toiletries such as shower gel and shampoo were provided but there was no hair dryer.

There were hardly any shops or restaurants in the vicinity of the resort. The resort has a restaurant with a menu consisting of a mix of western and asian cuisine. With breakfast included in the room booking price, packeted breakfast (consisting of cold, sliced bread and some fruits) were provided before setting out at 4am for the Borobudur Sunrise tour. Though not a highly palatable packeted breakfast, it was sufficient to tide through the climbing and walking activities at the Borobudur Temple in the early morning hours.

In summary, Villa Sumbing Indah rendered fairly high service quality in terms of attentiveness and responsiveness and a nice resort-style accommodation in a tranquil setting that is ideal for
people seeking a quiet and relaxing stay while visiting the Prambanan and Borobudur Temples. However, transportation charges by the resort are fairly high. Perhaps, a packaged-price that
includes airport-resort transfers as well as tours could be worked out to offer a more attractive transportation charge. Also, the quality of the packeted breakfast needs improvement.

As many reviews mention, it is very quiet, in the middle of nowhere on the edge of a medium-traffic road. A lovely pool which was immacualtely clean and refreshing after a warm walk around some of the local villages.

We had the suite which we felt was a little overprice when compared to other alternatives but a superb breakfast helped take the edge off the inevitable 4am wakeup (Even if you sleep heavily, bring ear plugs, anywhere in Java has a lot of mosques and it isn't just for five minutes, usually 15-20).

Bathroom was okay, shower had good water pressure but the towels were small and thin. At this price you'd expect a proper good quality towel. The bed has mosquito net (no mosquito's anyway) was fine, no aircon but it is cool enough not to need. The duvet was musty and not newly cleaned though (Although bed sheets underneath were clean and again, not acceptable at this level IMHO).

The potential for some great Franco-Indonesian fusion cuisine was there but it's a relatvely simple menu with French and Indonesian classics but imagine it serves them well given their very remote location. There is not really anywhere else to eat. However the steaks were simply superb and we ate them two night in a row they were so good.

Service was consistently first rate, drivers turned up on time and the local sights were amazing.

It's not the kind of hotel you would stay a week, more a pleasant drop-in for the local sights and then away. Improvements to the rooms, a more varied menu, better bedding and towels and they could justify their current pricing levels. As it is, I think it is a little on the expensive side for many nice Indonesian hotels with a better location. I think the standard rooms represent better value but the suite's additional cost is certainly not justified.

Room Tip: End suite was nice with a seperate sitting room and dining area for breakfast in the room. All rooms...

I've been there alone, for two days, I must say that I was surprised by the quality and the situation of this little resort. I was looking for a getaway place, somewhere I just can relax. Villa Sumbing Indha is that place.
Great view on the Sumbing volcano, the paddy fields all around and 10mn drive from Magelang city. The room, the swimming-pool, the restaurant, everything was good. I got an one hour javanese massage from a local lady, a little expensive, but a must do ! The swimming-pool is a real pool, very long and with 1,85m high on its deepest. The room is rustic, all in bamboos, with mosquito net around the bed, love the shower, simple but effective. The food, western or indonesian, à la carte !
They are quite easy to find, since the location on Google Map is correct.
I definitely recommend Villa Sumbing Indah.
