“The Closest to Borobodur, and the Wisest Choice!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

It's just a 15-minutes ride from Borobudur, and that means you can wake up much later to catch the sunrise from top of the temple compared to staying in other (and more expensive) resorts. The pool villa was spacious. The surrounding was quite rustic and natural. Excursions include a hike to Punthuk Setumbu - which you must try! The best thing of staying here is … THE FOOD! Oh God, I really love whatever they serve in the colonial-style restaurant. Also, the terrace on top of the reception lounge is the perfect tea time spot to gaze upon the mighty Borobudur.

Room Tip: Splurge for the Pool Villa

Ideally placed for visiting Borobudur and the surrounding countryside and villages. Unobtrusive yet attentive staff, comfortable villa and super bathroom. Morning yoga, excellent spa and massages. Food good, but not excellent, breakfast freshly cooked, not buffet. Beautiful views from the restaurant terrace. Dawn on Borobudur was worth going for even though it was cloudy. One of the loveliest places I have stayed for position, atmosphere and care.

Fantastic base to view Borobodur (although make your own arrangements to visit the temple as it will be a lot cheaper and it is very easy to organise yourself).

The resort is basically on a hill facing Borobodur.

The grounds are very pleasant (although there was construction work going on when we were there, but you are removed from that to a large extent) with a few lounge chairs scattered around the property to chill out and admire the scenery.

Lovely pool.

The mansion which has the restaurant has been very well done up - refined, relaxing.

The Balinese massage at the spa is extremely good.

If you do a Borobodur sunrise tour (which I actually believe is a complete waste of time and money -- there are hoards of people there with you and you pay a lot more -- whereas if you just turn up a 6.30 am for the normal admission, the light is really not that different and the sunrise crowds have started to dissipate so it is actually a much nicer experience) -- you can then come back to a wonderful breakfast on the terrace and contemplate Borodur in the distance.

The food in the restaurant is nicely presented (they go for the sophisticated vibe) and my friend who had a tiger prawn dish really enjoyed it, but my husband and I did not think much of our dishes - very plain -- it seemed like they had removed all spices/flavours (maybe because they assume anything with flavour will be too much for the western palate?) That was the weakest point for us. And the food wasn't cheap.

In conclusion, I would say it is a bit too pricey for what it offers, but you are paying for a first rate standard in a location where there are very few options in that category. Furthermore, Borobodur sight seeing is a very tiring experience, so it is worthwhile forking out a bit extra to be able to come back to a comfortable and relaxing base.

We were traveling with 2 young children (5 & 6 yrs) and my parents so stayed in the 2 bedroom garden villa. It was perfect for an extended family with beautiful views of the countryside and sounds of the village life just below us. The upper room had a balcony and was smaller but still a very good size, the lower room was larger and the staff kindly put in two extra twin beds for our girls (minor charge). The room was large enough that there was still plenty of extra room -- ideal.

The views from the resort are amazing. We enjoyed the view of Borobudur during every meal. The staff were great with the kids who particularly enjoyed the player piano in the dining room. The entire resort had a very relaxing, peaceful feel to it. High tea was included in our room rate so we enjoyed that every day at the main restaurant while the kids swam in the pool.

The location of this resort is fantastic, only about a 15 min drive. My husband and father were able to go to Borobudur for sunrise photos, return for breakfast, and go back again with the rest of the family without spending hours on the road.

The food was very good in general but their amazing breads were the highlight... along with the different herb butters.

The only negative is that the local mosque has an EXTREMELY loud speaker. Early morning and evening prayer calls are expected in the region but the speaker from this one is particularly loud and then there are many others in chorus nearby. We stayed right beside a mosque in Yogya and their speaker was not even as loud. Fortunately I had read the review on Trip Advisor before travel so it was not unexpected.

Room Tip: For extended family, 2 bedroom Garden Villa is ideal. But please note that rooms do have separate o...

Stayed in the pool villa for 2 nights and absolutely enjoyed it.

Location - just a 10 minute drive from the Borobudur Temple, a perfect base for a sunrise tour to the temple.

Villa & facility - the property itself is beautiful, with an excellent view of the borobudur temple and Mt Merapi from the restaurant as well as the pool villa. We also took advantage of the deck above the reception and watched sunrise from there and it's stunning and mystical with the fog around. The spa was also lovely. The room is tastefully decorated, clean and spacious. The private pool is also very nice and of a good size. We were not bothered by the prayer calls as it was not loud from the pool villa.

Food - we had breakfast and dinners at the restaurant in Plataran, and also love the afternoon tea served on the terrace. Don't miss the Mie Goreng served in breakfast, it's very good!

Service and tours - every staff member at Plataran is very helpful and friendly. Garuda lost my luggage from my flight from Jakarta to Yogya and the staff from Plataran have been extremely helpful to follow up for me and I got the luggage back the next morning. We did the sunrise tour arranged by the resort. It's slightly pricey but it's all worth it. A very comfortable ride to the temple, all logistics arranged by Plataran and a private tour guide to walk around the temple after the sunrise. We also did the horse carriage tour around the village and enojoyed it a lot. The scenery along the way was amazing and our guide (for both the sunrise and village tours), Wisnu, has definitely helped made our trips all the more enjoyable. Wisnu is extremely friendly, speaks very good English and happy to share with us about village lives and everything about Borobudur with us.

Overall, it's a great sanctuary to relax, enjoy the stunning view and ambience offered by Borobdur. A very well-run property managed friendly, helpful staff. Will certainly choose to stay at the Plataran if I visit again.

Room Tip: It's worth staying in the pool villa. Great view, nice pool, good privacy and a very nice room.

Yes, you can see the stupa at Borobudur from most of the public areas (and the grandest rooms). You look across wooded countryside, which gives a magical impression. Our paddy cabana was charming, though lacking surfaces on which to put things, and felt very private. You feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere, but the countryside is actually full of activity (we were awoken by the muezzin, and then by a cockerel). The food is very good, and the service absolutely charming. Afternoon tea on the terrace was very indulgent. The pool was very nice. I would strongly recommend taking the opportunity to use the hotel's bikes to cycle around the neighbourhood, as the back roads have virtually no traffic, and are pretty flat and well-surfaced. The bikes are pretty well-maintained (we rode Specialized mountain bikes, but there are a couple of old-fashioned bikes as well) and the staff are very helpful, and make sure everything is properly adjusted for you. They give you a map of the area, but it's very relaxing just to pedal around, and you get some magnificent views of the stupa.
