After a lot of research, we decided on one night, a quick in and out of Borobudur. We wanted to see the sunrise and be on the first plane back to Bali. This obviously meant the Hotel Manohara, situated on the grounds of Borobudur temple.

Compared to other hotels/inns we stayed in Indonesia, Manohara was definitely more expensive. I think we got a rate of approximately $100 USD on booking.com. We decided to stay on site so we could role out of bed for sunrise and then roll back into bed when we returned at 8 AM. The early pass is included for hotel guests which was another factor in choosing Manohara - if we stayed elsewhere, we would have to pay the $25 entrance fee plus the taxi fare.

The grounds of the hotel are quite lovely and easily accessible to other features of Borobudur. After sunrise you can wander the grounds and go back to Borobudur as many times as you like for no cost, if you had sunrise entrance that day.

The rooms were meh - bathroom did come with some soaps and shampoos but it was only slighly gross. There really wasn't anything special with the exception of 5 English movie channels. Most other guests are in and out as well so there aren't a lot of amenities given that the main attraction is the temple. Every room is on the ground floor and has a little patio. There are lots of bugs at night so you probably won't stay out there too long. Food was meh, stick with the local dishes. It seems like a lot of people get bored because the Bintang beer stock seemed to always be running low. There is also no safe in the room, they will hold your things in a flimsy cabinet behind the front desk if you like.

I would only stay again if I had the same agenda as listed above but that was most likely a once in a lifetime trip.

The Manohara Hotel in Borobudur was a really nice introduction for our vacation to Yogyakarta.
On arrival after a long journey from the airport through the traffic jams, the hotel was a welcome sight. The check in was speedy with friendly staff and our rooms were clean and the air conditioning was heavenly. The grounds of the whole resort was so relaxing and beautiful and after a refreshing shower, we just sat at the balcony and had our coffee and tea and chat. So quiet and relaxing.
Dinnerat the hotel restaurant was suburb - from the simple nasi goreng to the more fanciful steak. Breakfast too was adequet.
The only draw back was that the flooring was squeaky due to the uneven floor laminate and the bathroom ventilation needs looking into.
Other than these, we had a good time here and being on the grounds of the great Borobudur Temple, we had the priviledge of gazing into it any time of the day.

I loved this place - one of the most peaceful, clean and nice hotels I've ever been. The amazing Buddhist Temple can be seen from the window really. Big clean rooms, beautiful green gardens, friendly staff and tasty food. May go to the temple as many times as you wish. Good video presentation. I can recommend the hotel - the best place for everyone who is going to visit the Temple.

I'd love to go back to Borobudur. It definately has its place in my heart and it's one of the most mesmerizing, peaceful places I've been to. Just the sheer fact that I could stay a night WITHIN the boundary of 9th century Buddhist Temple was pretty cool. Location of restaurant was awesome, allowing me to taste food and the scenery at the same time.

Foods, though. Nah, don't expect much. A bedoom hygiene was not satisfying and looked very dated. But I guess most guests (who voluntarily travel to the area) in the Borobudur know what they might or might not get. So just don't expect luxurious expereince as Manohara seems to demonstrate on its website--because it's different than what it looks like on the website.

But I still think it's a worth stay and I would like to recommend to some of my friends if they ask my opinion.

It's a really good hotel inside the Borobudur temple recint. You can actually see the temple from your own small backyard!
The hotel is good, clean and tidy, big room (we had a double room), big bathroom, and well, even if it's a little bit expensive comparing to other hotels in Indonesia, worths the difference.
And do yourselves a favor and take the Sunrise Ticket; you can buy it if you're not staying there, but if you do, you just have to walk to reception and then get to the temple at 5-6am to see the sunrise. BREATHTAKING.
If you need a guide, please, PLEASE, ask for Fatah. He's one of the best guides I've ever had. He told us he used to live beside the temple, that he actually played hide and seek in there... And you can tell he loves the place by the way he talks about it.
If you don't want a guide, you can see a summary of the temple's story from your own room. But I strongly recommend a guide.

Hotel is situated next to the temple which was great and has a very beautiful surroundings. The other good thing was you could visit the temple as many times as you want and the staff were friendly. However just a basic hotel, don't expect 5 star amenities. The towels and bed sheet were a bit dated. But overall a hotel with great location and beautiful garden.

With its unbeatable location, we booked 3 nights here. The place has a nice ambiance, like an exotic resort. Rooms are in cluster buildings (all ground floors) with terrace at the back. The entire premise is clean. There were cats around, not sure if they were wild or domesticated, but they were entertaining as they play, like a breath of fresh air in the otherwise still environment.

The breakfast buffet was good but nothing exemplary. They have local and western choices. They served good food in the restaurant at night where some folk dance and music are performed with the illuminated temple as the background. It was a nice experience.

The temple is so close and they organize the sunrise and sunset viewing trips with discounted rates for hotel guests. That being said, this hotel is a great base for visiting Borobudur temple, but not for anything else. When we were done exploring the temple, we found ourselves nothing much to do within the hotel premises. Sure they have cycling, but under the hot sun it's not really an inviting activity. It's only good in the morning or in the afternoon. But then again these are also the best times to explore the temple to avoid the noontime heat. I guess if only they have a swimming pool, that would change everything.

I think 1night is enough here. Two at the most. If you are visiting other areas in Jogjakarta, it's better to base your hotel in the city center. This hotel takes much travel time when you visit other interesting places in Jogjakarta.
