After a lot of research, we decided on one night, a quick in and out of Borobudur. We wanted to see the sunrise and be on the first plane back to Bali. This obviously meant the Hotel Manohara, situated on the grounds of Borobudur temple.
Compared to other hotels/inns we stayed in Indonesia, Manohara was definitely more expensive. I think we got a rate of approximately $100 USD on booking.com. We decided to stay on site so we could role out of bed for sunrise and then roll back into bed when we returned at 8 AM. The early pass is included for hotel guests which was another factor in choosing Manohara - if we stayed elsewhere, we would have to pay the $25 entrance fee plus the taxi fare.
The grounds of the hotel are quite lovely and easily accessible to other features of Borobudur. After sunrise you can wander the grounds and go back to Borobudur as many times as you like for no cost, if you had sunrise entrance that day.
The rooms were meh - bathroom did come with some soaps and shampoos but it was only slighly gross. There really wasn't anything special with the exception of 5 English movie channels. Most other guests are in and out as well so there aren't a lot of amenities given that the main attraction is the temple. Every room is on the ground floor and has a little patio. There are lots of bugs at night so you probably won't stay out there too long. Food was meh, stick with the local dishes. It seems like a lot of people get bored because the Bintang beer stock seemed to always be running low. There is also no safe in the room, they will hold your things in a flimsy cabinet behind the front desk if you like.
I would only stay again if I had the same agenda as listed above but that was most likely a once in a lifetime trip.
