“Golf break at Botley Park”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

Stayed here with three friends for a two day golf break. Two rounds of golf plus dinner bed and breakfast for £99 which was very good value. The dinner menu seemed a little pretentious but the food turned out to be pretty good. Breakfast was also very good. The staff are all excellent and the room was good, clean and air conditioned which was very welcome since we were there on the hottest two days of the year so far! The golf course is very good despite being a little parched (like many others) due to the hot weather.
One negative: the bar prices are outrageously high (as are the wine list prices). We had after-dinner drinks comprising a glass of red wine, a gin and tonic, a JD and coke and a plain coke all of which amounted to more than £28! Needless to say, we only had one round despite sitting in the bar for a couple of hours. The patio adjacent to the golf course is a pleasant location for a snack lunch but see above re bar prices. The bar menu is also expensive - £12 for ham, egg and chips, £12.50 for a burger etc.
We all agreed that we would come again because we like the golf course but would bring a bottle of two and have drinks in the room next time or visit the local pub.

Stayed here after attending a 60th birthday party locally. Room was clean & comfortable & the aircon worked which was very welcome in the recent hot weather! Ate in the bar on the first night - food very average considering the price & in the restaurant on the second night where the quality of food was similar. Best thing we ate was the cream tea which came as part of the booking deal! Staff were all very helpful & welcoming. Shame the food lets it down.

Stayed here 4 days for work. Nice rooms, staff are excellent. My only complaint was that there isn't really anything within walking distance. Great, if you are looking for peace and quiet; not so great if you are trying to do some local sightseeing while working. The nearby town of Botley was good fun- some good restaurants and pubs, and only a 5 minute taxi ride away.

Room Tip: Stayed in the 400 section. Really nice rooms. Didn't see any other rooms, so I can't compare...

Thank you for your comments, we are 20 mins away from Southampton city centre but we have some great near by villages that offer a variety of dining and entertainment of an evening

My girlfriend and I stay here for a two night break in Southampton. Overall the hotel is ok.. The pool had broken steps leading into the water and the steam room was broken. The executive room we booked was quite small ( but clean ) the staff are excellent and are a credit to the hotel. We won't be returning as you can get far more for your money at a hilton or Marriott or Radisson

The hotel is beautiful, very clean and the staff were very welcoming. The bedroom was also beautiful and the bed was so large and comfy it was like sleeping on a cloud! There were also black out curtains in the bedroom which made it the room nice and dark. The facilities are good as well.

The only thing that let our stay down was the food, the hotel is quite far from places to eat so we decided to stay in and eat but we were so disappointed, especially for a restaurant with a rosette award! The quality of food was bad and the food was cold. The service wasn't too bad but when I asked for a white wine spritzer they bought me just a lemonade... twice.

I would stay here again on my way to Southampton but I wouldn't eat here again!!

First and foremost, please accept my sincere apologies for the lapse in standards of service experienced on this occasion. As I am sure you are aware, this is not the usual standard of hospitality we would wish to offer our guests and I am very sorry your expectations were not met. Indeed, it is rare to receive negative feedback regarding the hotel, especially relating to the quality of food

We booked the hotel as part of a Paultons Theme Park package. Overall it was good value for money on a 2 park entry days for 1 offer.
Check in was prompt and polite, the children being checked in themselves with a Peppa Pig activity pack was a nice touch.
We stayed in room 101 (!) which was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. A z-bed was provided for our little girl which was perfectly comfortable. Air conditioning kept us cool on a warm night and the water pressure for the shower was good. Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided in the room although the fridge was not switched on but this was just a little gripe.
After a long journey and a day of fun at Paultons we were tired so decided to eat at the hotel. We were a little early for the restaurant so decided to sit in the bar area of the foyer for 10mins and buy a round of drinks. 2 course set menu was £23pp. My husband who is accustomed to staying in London hotels for business found the female bar tender a little rude as he was advised to move the children to the sports lounge - the children in our party, two girls were sitting nicely colouring in their activity packs so were not causing any nuisance to the empty bar. The maitre'd then appeared from the restaurant and asked if we wanted to book a table but quickly added that we might be more comfortable in the sports lounge where the children could run around and watch TV (let me add we aren't people who just plonk our children in front of the box just to keep them quiet). We felt that perhaps we werent wanted in the restaurant so decided to move to the sports lounge without argument as it had been a long day - this essentially felt like a wide corridor with tables and chairs in, we had to combine two sets to accommodate us. Carpets were taped down with parcel tape in places, empty display cabinets, very featureless with the rattan furniture looking a bit tired. We ordered our food from the bar menu and after a very long wait the food arrived. The burger, fish and ham and egg were all nice, the homecut chips on all plates were all undercooked - not unpleasant to us but not to everyone's taste. The children opted for fish fingers and chips (fries), both of which were undoubtedly processed shop bought and not freshly made.
There was at least a 30minute wait between our children's plates being taken away and the bowl of 2 scoops of ice cream arriving - it was not busy there was one other family in the lounge. The waiter Karol was friendly, polite and helpful.
Overnight, we all slept quite well. There was a large gap under the door which meant the movement-activated lights in the corridor would flood the room with light on occasion.
Breakfast was simple, choices of continental or full English certainly no thrills but to put it in context if it wasn't included in your room package you would have to pay £18pp for it - not worth it.
Quick checkout, the invoice is pushed under your door overnight and you can just sign it and put it in a box in reception.
Overall, Ok experience but when we visit Paultons again (which I'm sure we will) we will visit another hotel.

I stayed at Botley park hotel for 3 weeks with my company. I was there on a bed and dinner board basis. The staff were excellent! Went out of their way to help and did what they could to make me feel at home. The staff are the saving grace for this hotel as the food is a huge let down for a 4 star hotel and a rosette award restaurant.

The facilities are good, clean and well maintained. The rooms are big and comfortable but just a bog standard hotel room nothing special.

Food on the other hand was awful! Sausages and mash cost £15 and it was instant mash reheated sausages from breakfast which were tiny and on one occasion not microwaved very well as they were still cold in the middle. It came with 3 sausages and gravy which tasted like it was from gravy granules.
The fish and chips were oily and very often over cooked and the hand cut chips often still slightly hard in the centre.
The steak if you ask for it medium rare comes either well done or raw and cold.
The vegetables consist of 5 varieties carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans and potatoes.

Now to breakfast, it's a continental buffet with a good selection of cereals, fruit, meats and cheeses. He cooked breakfast was awful the black pudding was greasy. Poached eggs were hard boiled or uncooked. Very salty bacon and the same sausages for dinner. The toast was always cold when it came from the kitchen as well.
Croissants were nice though as was the fresh melon. All the other fruit was tinned so very sweet.
The porridge is bland and has a wall paper glue consistency.

When large groups arrived they reverted to orange juice from concentrate and not fresh juice as I assume it assured more profits for the hotel.

If you want some good food head into Botley and have a roast at the bugle for £8.95 it was delicious and fresh!

Great hotel to stay in if you are planning on eating out elsewhere. Like I said previously the staff are excellent the facilities are great it's just the food that let's them down.

Indeed, it is rare to receive negative feedback regarding the hotel, especially relating to the quality of food and especially the breakfast offering. Just for the record we do not use instant mash , tinned fruit all ingredients are carefully sourced and we are very proud of our food province
