I thought this hotel was absolutely lovely and the staff excellent. The location is central to main links to London and ideal if you are exploring Essex. My visit was purely for a 'getaway' night and it was absolutely perfect and I will definitely stay there again. The rooms are lovely, we stayed in the modern garden wing - the room and furnishings were of a very high standard as was the cleanliness. The complimentary slippers, bathrobes and Molten Brown accessories were a lovely touch. We had dinner in the Brasserie as this is considerably cheaper than the Signatures Fine Dining of £45 a head. However I did find the Menu a little small in terms of choice and it was hard to choose something I liked as each dish was 'a bit too fancy' in terms of description. Whilst the staff were as accommodating as possible there were not really enough 'normal' choices and the vegetarian choices were not good. Breakfast on the other than was excellent, cooked to order, served hot to your table, with a great range of juices, cold meats, cheeses and cereals etc.

Room Tip: The Garden Wing is very modern whilst the main part of the hotel is more traditional.

Went for meal with friends and hubbie and I stayed over as a extra treat. Excellent meal in lovely surroundings and the room was superb. This hotel and restaurant deserve and need to be busy to give the students the full working experience in a high class establishment. Give them a look if you want to eat or stay in Colchester - you won't be sorry.

Room Tip: All rooms excellent, don't think you can go wrong in any price category.

We ate in the brasserie Christmas Eve as the Signature Restaurant was closed and we had read all the glowing reports on Tripadvisor. The menu was very limited, had we been informed of this at the time of booking we would not have eaten there. I am a vegetarian so my only choice was risotto which had fried cauliflour on the top and was cold, my husband had the turkey, which consisted only of dark meat and my son had the beef cheek which was excellent. There were no vegetables available and the wine was extremely expensive. Very nouveau cuisine. Would not recommend if you are hungry. There are several much better restaurants in the village of Wivenhoe

What a wonderful hotel. The décor is a wonder to behold. As other reviewers have stated, the staff are wonderful. Attentive and have a ‘can do’ attitude… nothing is too much trouble.
I arrived late, as I’d convinced my self that my Sat Nav must be wrong, but it IS right onn the Essex Uni campus. So I simply phoned the hotel , and was expertly guided in.
On arrival, the basserie was just shut but they made me the delightful soup and the fishfinger sandwich available on the planet Mmmm I could just eat another right now.

Unfortunately there is no Spa on site9 but you can use the Gym at the Uni. If it did have a Spa, then undoubtedly this would be the best hotel in the UK.

Room Tip: i stayed in the Traditional rooms, but the modern rooms are equally nice.

This was a great evening at the Wivenhoe House. We had dinner in the Signature Restaurant and the food was exemplary. Service here is beyond criticism. The evening was complemented by a casino event and disco, both of which were well run. The only downside was that the fireworks were cancelled due to the weather and we were told that we would receive complementary drinks instead. Regrettably, these drinks did not appear.
The bedrooms are of a very high standard, equipped with Apple i-macs and Milton Brown toiletries in the bathroom. Very comfortable beds.
We would recommend this hotel and would return.
