“Great place to chill in style.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2013

We truly love this place. The staff are a mixture of university students and professionals but telling who's who would be difficult. Food, service, cleanliness are all brilliant. You can even get shown around the vacant hotel rooms which are amazing.
Afternoon tea is better than London's top end and half the price + the Brazzerie serves a choice of good honest food in a classy surroundings. Again the staff seem to care.

Room Tip: Just try it and see.

Wivenhoe house is in partnership with the Edge Hotel School which has degree courses run out of it, all students strive to achieve high standards always of service. When the students are working at Wivenhoe House, they are part of the team, they are treated no different to the professionals. Thank you for your lovely review - we hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind Regards,
Sophie Barrett

We were attending this hotel to have cream tea. We were welcomed by a charming young gentleman who gave us a little history regarding the house (it used to be the headquarters for the SAS). The cream tea was similarly delightful including the variety of cakes and delicious scones. I only have one complaint and that is the minimal sandwiches. They were so small to be pointless which is a real shame as I THINK they were delicious but as they were so tiny I couldn't really taste them.

I'm a student at the University of Essex so have watched the whole renovation from the outside and have looked forward to seeing it! Inside it was beautiful, but relatively quiet for 8pm when we arrived. The only negative point would be that I felt a lack of privacy in the public areas. When my partner ordered a bottle of sparkling rose, which we drank in the reception rooms, the staff stood by each door in the room... it felt a little intimidating, and we soon retired to the bedroom.

The room was lovely, however we were situated in the renovated section. As a lover of history I would have loved to stay in the more character-ful rooms; but nonetheless the room we had was stunning, luxurious and comfortable... the bathroom was gorgeous too.

Breakfast was fantastic.. I'm a fussy eater and not generally a fan of breakfast but it was gorgeous at the Wivenhoe House hotel! We were even slightly late arriving for breakfast, but the staff members kept breakfast open until we had finished, which was a beautiful touch. Looks 5* and you are definitely treated that way.

Colchester hotels are very adequate.. except this one. Could not recommend enough

Room Tip: If you like modcons, pick the refurbed area. But if you like character try a room in the original ho...

I visited Wivenhoe House after reading other reviews on TripAdvisor and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was my Grandmas birthday and wanted to treat her to a special day out - I can honestly say it surpassed my expectations.

From the initial reservation the staff were prompt to reply and more than helpful. The house itself is beautiful and the offer of a short tour with some history of the renovation was gratefully received. The afternoon tea itself was delicious, a round of sandwiches served on speciality breads, followed by fresh apple & cinnamon scones with clotted cream and local jam. We also received an assortment of cakes and pastries, a selection of macaroons and a sample of refreshing elderflower & raspberry presse. There was a good selection if teas on offer and this was regularly refreshed throughout the afternoon with no prompting.

I would love to stay in the hotel and experience the superb service over a longer period of time.

I would definitely recommend a trip to this hidden gem.

We spent the weekend at this wonderful venue. We were bowled over by the level of service and the quality of he accommodation provided. The meals in the "Brasserie" restaurant were delicious with excellent service at both the evening and morning meals. There were slight niggles in that the Hotel is not that easy to find, particularly if you punch in the post code in a Sat.nav. It was also surprising that accommodation of this type did not have Air Con, the room was quite hot and we had to eave the windows open all night. That being said, we thoroughly enjoyed staying there and will return!

Many thanks for taking the time to give us such a lovely review. My apologies that you found it hard to find us, unfortunately some Sat Navs do not show the right way to Wivenhoe House. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary here, we got married here 10 years ago. It was good then, but now it is the best hotel we have ever stayed in, we were looked after by such kind and friendly staff, the food is out of this world, can't say how much we enjoyed it, saving up the pennies so we can go again soon - what a hidden gem - thank you!

Stayed here for two nights and the whole experience was excellent. Rooms are good, clean with good facilities. WiFi works well & the food is excellent for the price. All the staff were very friendly and efficient. If I needed a hotel in the area again I would not hesitate to book here.
