We looked at numerous venues prior to settling on Wivenhoe House for our daughter’s wedding. This was a wedding with over 100 all day guests and we booked half the hotel on Friday and the whole place on Saturday. There is a real variety of rooms on offer and all are of a high standard. All other venues reviewed promised that they tailor the day to your specific requirements but, on closer inspection, generally offer a fixed wedding package with a few options.

The Wivenhoe House events team engaged us from the start seeking to understand exactly what the bride and groom expected and wanted for their big day – and they delivered in all aspects beyond our expectations. Our guests all commented that we must be delighted as the day was faultless and could not have been bettered in any way – they were right.
Menus were discussed from the most basic level (what do you like/want) and developed into a spectacular meal (with an excellent vegetarian alternative) that was ultimately positively commented on by all. Wines were expertly matched to the food, which was also widely appreciated.
The levels of service throughout our stay and for the wedding itself were faultless. Furniture was moved and rooms rearranged in such a discrete manner that we never saw it happen. Wivenhoe House have a clearly happy staff and it shows in what they do.
People recognise that this is a teaching establishment and you are often but not exclusively served by students. However, these are students of hotel management learning how to operate all areas of the hotel so they may train/critique their staff in the future. They are discretely mentored by senior people who could easily slot in to any grand hotel environment. If you did not know this was a teaching establishment there is little evidence to suggest that is the case. In fact we would argue that the service level is better than most because all staff are trying their best.

We had never previously heard of Wivenhoe House, but we shall certainly be visiting again.

Room Tip: The suites are all unique - there is something to suit most tastes. The old house is traditional and...

A very pleasant hotel, contemporary in design and service style. We are regular one night stay hotel visitors and we booked at short notice with little prior knowledge of the hotel or town. Impressive position, architecture and styling. All new in 2012. Well maintained. We were given the Baxter Storey mini suite and wow what a room and view. Quiet and undisturbed rest. The room was very well equipped and the bed lovely. We ate in the Brasserie and felt the dinner menu was well thought through and the food itself very good indeed.

Thanks to the reception staff who were exemplary in their handling of a package I had delivered.

Other reviews focus on the position of the hotel in the Uni campus. This is not an issue and does not detract from the hotels credibility. Some say this is a training hotel. We didn't notice any failings. Professional at all times.

Overall we were delighted with our choice of hotel and our stay. Well done Wivenhoe!

Thank you for taking the time and writing such a positive review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and your comments will be shared with all members of the team. I would agree by saying we do not consider ourselves as a training hotel but more a hotel that is developing some of the best future hoteliers of this country. We very much look forward to seeing you back at Wivenhoe House.

I stayed at the Wivenhoe House Hotel the night before my wedding with my best man and ushers and we booked two twin rooms in the conference wing. The hotel itself is absolute first class, five star luxury, traditional English country house features but with plenty of extras such as an iMac in the room which was hugely impressive. I ate dinner in the restaurant and the food and service was exceptional and as delicious and varied as any Michelin starred restaurant. The rooms didn't have a fridge or mini bar which I thought was odd nor was there any air conditioning but a fan was provided. Location wise it's perfect to get into Colchester and the lady on receptions was exceptionally helpful and went out of her way to help me and my best men with a few final last minute arrangements. The hotel needs bette sign posting too and we got lost a few times on the way. My only real complaint was that I wasn't able to get a late check out on the Saturday. The hotel is used by wedding parties, my wedding was elsewhere and we weren't staying at this hotel and the guy I spoke to on reception was fairly blunt and rude about getting a late check out and told us to vacate our rooms by 11am latest. I could see the hotel was expecting early check ins but it's not hard to be polite! All in all a great stay despite a rude member of front of house staff.

The room we stayed in was so nice the bed was incredibly comfy. I was impressed we had a coffee machine in our room. With various types of coffee to choose, a real nice touch, the room was 5 star. The staff in the restaurant were just wonderful, the French gentleman was so helpful and very particular and attention to detail. I didn't really like Colchester that much. Will probably go back just for a treat and stay in this hotel. Lovely breakfast too. Nothing negative to say about this place.

A truly splendid place to go for an afternoon tea.

Every aspect of our visit today was thoroughly enjoyable. The customer service was faultless and we were made to feel like Royalty. The food was delicious and plentiful and was served in sumptuous surroundings.

The entire experience represented excellent value for money and could not have been improved upon in any way.

We also had a quick look at the Brasserie restaurant and decided to book a couple of meals for later in the year - including Christmas day!

We can't wait to return!!!

:o)

what a lovely hotel with wonderful staff.

Thank you.

We really enjoyed our stay at the weekend and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast with you. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very very well furnished.

My only grip is missing out on afternoon tea as you were using all your lounges/restaurants for a wedding!
