“A beautiful place to stay...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

Stayed here back in January and would definately return. The rooms were beautiful and catered for all of our needs. There was even a Mac computer with access to the Internet, TV and Radio.

I requested an iron which was brought up straight away with a board. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful!

Would definately recommend!

You will hear the phrase ' I am sorry' a lot at this hotel training hotel.

The staff are all very friendly students learning on the job... very well trained in apologizing for the food, the dirty windows of the room, the cobwebs... sorry!

Do not eat in the Brasserie, the prices are from London but the food is from amateurs using us as lab rats.

To start I had the asparagus with a poached egg that was full of vinegar, then the roast chicken, I could not eat the overcooked vegetables (sent them back only for them to arrive when I had finished with the dessert!) which was an apple and strawberry crumble that could best be described as stewed fruit with a sprinkling of muesli on top.

I made the mistake in the morning of having scrambled eggs... which I cannot describe... other than a watery, chewy, tasteless... blob!

But what can you say to a student who has been saying sorry all morning... its not her fault!

So its a great manor house and lovely gardens location, stunning from the outside but poorly refurbished communal areas in the main house (stay in the modern block - hopefully they will clean the windows so you can see the beautiful gardens)... just don't eat the food unless you want to pay £100 (including wine) for 2 to be test dummies!

They did knock off £9 for the inconvenience of no vegetables... and said sorry!

Stick to the afternoon tea!... sorry!

Room Tip: modern block overlooking the garden. Do not ask for 101 unless you are disabled and need wheelchair...

I am very disappointed to read your feedback and can assure you that the team will certainly take your feedback very seriously. Your comments about your dining experience will certainly be shared with our kitchen team and I can only apologise if we did not meet our usually very high standards but also your expectations. My chosen life partner and I are old hands at this afternoon tea malarkey,so we thought we would invite our parents to join us outside of London for a change.
Wivenhoe House has a spacious lounge/tea area which is a pleasant change from some London hotels which tend to feel claustrophobic.
The staff are all very pleasant and polite, and after being shown to our table we were presented with our afternoon tea...The 'sandwiches' and I use the term loosely, were the smallest and thinnest I have ever seen, just four each served on a roof slate?! The rest of the tea,a nice selection of finger cakes was good. Its a shame that Tea was spoilt by what seems to be some unfortunate penny pinching...strange, as at around £20 ea you would have thought that a more substantial selection of sandwiches would have not run the hotel into the red!
So, the Connaught in London still holds the crown for best afternoon tea, IMHO.

Dear Jim,

thank you very much for posting an online review about your afternoon tea experience. I am delighted to read that you chose Wivenhoe House as an afternoon tea destination outside of London. Your comments about the sandwiches will certainly be passed on to our kitchen team as we continuously review our standards. I must admit that in the past we have had many occasions when we offered our guests mini boxes to take away some of their afternoon teas. I very much appreciate your comments and do hope to see you back in the near future. Please do stop by and ask for me personally next time. Regards, Damir Terzic.

Hotel is lovely, staff is nice, Milsoms Suite is spacious and includes a computer and a fantastic coffee maker! Bad news: it's a training hotel; one student worker was snippy when delivering a cold, fatty BLT; students in training need more focus on guest service & solving problems. We were offered a daily newspaper but not told there would be a 1.25 GBP fee/day. The restaurant dinner was awful - horrible menu and ridiculously pricey. We walked to the nearby campus to grab dinner because there is nothing close by. Dinner on campus is dinner on campus (not great). There's a bit of a walk (hike) to get to the buses that take you to the Wivenhoe or Colchester trains. Sorry to say we wouldn't go back.

Room Tip: We loved the Milsoms Room The extra charge for a suite was well worth it!

Thank you very much for taking the time and writing an online review. I am disappointed to read the comments you have made about the level of service you received and your views about our menu offering. We are proud to be the home of the Edge Hotel School where we educate students to become future leaders of our industry. Rest assured that training students on the guest experience and service recovery is certainly a priority and I would like to apologise for not delivering our usually high standards but also regret that we missed the opportunity to showcase what level of service, including our students, we are able to provide to our guests. Please do contact me directly with regards to your meal in the restaurant as I would then be able to forward the detailed feedback onto our executive chef. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us as feedback is invaluable in our further improvements and development. I would very much like the opportunity of welcoming you back at Wivenhoe House at some point in the future in order to prove our ambition of training the best in a 4* environment, delivering world class service. Rest assured your comments will be shared amongst the entire team and changes implemented where necessary. Regards, Damir Terzic

This is the first time that I've visited Wivenhoe House for food. A large group of us met for a birthday afternoon tea and it was excellent. The service was top notch, very friendly and attentive staff with an excellent sense of humour. The tea was perfect, sandwiches, cakes and scones.....the mini carrot cake was to die for. Roll on the next birthday eh?

We visited our son who is in grad. school and stayed at the Wivenhoe House in Colechester, England. This was a very pleasurable experience, The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was exceptionally large for English hotel rooms, very clean and exceptionally decorated. The grounds were manicured and beautiful. The food at the Hotel was another great treat. All in all this was a great place to stay and dine. We would love to come back someday!
