“An absolute gem!”
Reviewed 15 March 2014 via mobile

Having collected my wife's car we searched for somewhere new to eat. Great reviews led us here- we were not disappointed. Superb position on the river, great selection of real ales, great menu. Inviting landlord, complete with tide table!

“When is a pie not a pie?”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

A group of 8 or so dined here of an evening. cracking location right on the river. Guess that why they can serve very average food and still be busy! normal deep fried pub fair for starters with mains much the same. i had the steak and ale pie, or more accurately that's what i ordered! meat was ok in a "bisto" kind of way enough but i am afraid a casserole cooked on the stove with a seperatly cooked pie lid is not a pie. A pie has a top, sides and a bottom whether served as an individual or a slice. Just laziness on the chefs part that has filtered out from the chain pubs, frozen chips and peas. expensive for what was delivered. i would rather pay a pound or two more per course and get the real deal.

“Lovely spot”
Reviewed 19 December 2013 via mobile

Picked this place for a midweek lunch by chance as it's close to the river. Very impressed on arrival, lovely position on the quay. A nice bar area and tables set along a wall of windows overlooking the river. Summer must be fabulous as they have plenty of tables outside too.

We just had a drink and a main. I had the haddock in batter and chips, piping hot and golden. Very nice - think decent pub grub quality.

2 x soft drinks, 2 x mains = £28

A couple of delightful ladies serving, decent food and a great setting. What else do you need?

“wonderful food and setting”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

Have been about 4 times on saturday early afternoons, as a couple, and really enjoyed all the food and service was good. we had vodka and lime cheesecake which was to die for. Relaxing setting hard to believe we were 'in' colchester, as felt 'nicely' old fashioned, with a slower pace of life.
great little place
