“Nice view, clean rooms and good service”
Reviewed 9 February 2014

I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel. It has such a lovely view over the river! Also the hotel itself is cute: it all made of wood. Unfortunately, there is not so much to do in Mae Sariang if you don't drive motorbike/take a guided tour and I decided to leave one day earlier. The hotel gave me back the money of that night, which I highly appreciate!

As part of a group of four cycling the maddening hills to the south of Mae Sariang (from Mae Sot), we found this lovely hotel to be a welcome place to relax. The rooms are very nicely done with lots of wood and a great bed. The breakfast was good for the style of resort but nothing to write home about except for the free flow coffee which made the restaurant deck overlooking the river nice and enjoyable.

Room Tip: river front view

There is not much to see in the small village of Mae Sariang--but if you are here--this appeared to be the nicest hotel in town. The balcony over the river was nice--kind of a simple rustic lodge atmosphere.

Mae Sariang is almost 200 km from Chiang Mai. This is a small town of Mae Hong Son province - with some morning and regular markets where people buy and sell seasonal vegetables and fruits. It is not that far from the Burma Border (around 50 km). River House Hotel is located at the heart of the town - and quite close (on the bank of river Mu Yu klo). The river Mu Yu klo (in Karen) and if I have to translate it to English it’s Maesariang River because Karen people call the town name Mu yu when Thai people call Maesaraing, which flows downward to the Burma Border. The tariff of the hotel ranges from B 700.00 during off season to B 950.00 during the touristic season (November -December and even January). The weather is chili (during December, around 5 degree celcius ) but during the summer it is quite hot and above 33 degree Celsius. River House Hotel is a wooden house building mostly made out of Teak wood which are found abundantly in that part of the World. The hotel is quite neat and clean rooms (almost) 12-14 rooms. The river flows on the back side of the hotel and from the balcony of the hotel one can enjoy the tranquility of the place and the small green bush across the river. It is quiet during the night. The stay is quite comfortable because of friendly staff.

Room Tip: First Floors Rooms for a wonderful River view

This was by far the best place we stayed in Thailand. The staff was very helpful in bringing luggage up and down the stairs (no elevators there obviously). The view was beautiful and with a deck. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Bed was typical Thai (hard). The bathroom was very nice with a large shower and accommodations. The food was very good (buffet style).

There's nothing of great interest in tiny and dull Mae Sariang town itself so having a room with a balcony that offers a sweeping view of the river and surrounding greenery makes a lot of difference when you're just lazing around in the room. The river is of a dirty light brown colour but as it is lined by lots of trees, the entire scenery actually looks ok and even beautiful, when it starts to drizzle and during dawn and dusk.

Surprisingly, views from the rooms on the 3rd storey are not as good as those on the 2nd storey as views are restricted by some tree branches. The balcony and some parts of the room do not look very clean (some algae on the balcony's cement floor, dusty shelves next to the bed) and more care and efforts could have been spent in cleaning these areas. Shower cubicle is dim as the lights are located outside the shower stall. You may hear heavy footsteps from the rooms above you as all the floor are made with teak wood.

Despite these shortcomings, I actually enjoyed my stay here - surprisingly! I find the staff friendly, pleasant and welcoming contrary to feedback made by some of the previous TA reviewers. I guess they have been better trained now? One of them has better English language skills and is very helpful and truthful in pointing out the good rooms for me so that I get one with one of the best river views in the hotel. The American Breakfast was delicious and the expresso is fabulous! The same staff was also very kind in offering a free refill of my cuppa during breakfast. Blown fuse in the room are promptly replaced when notified so I'm really impressed with the overall service.

There's a computer for guests' use next to the reception counter and hair-dryer is available upon request at the reception. There's no coffee/tea making facilities in the room - just bottled water provided free on a daily basis. Other amenities in the room are : LCD TV, Air-con, ceiling fan, shampoo and soap.

Hotel is just 5 minutes walk from the main bus station and there's a 7-11 shop round the corner. A few restaurants are close by as well.

Thus, not a bad choice if you want a nice balcony view and good service without spending a fortune for it.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms seem like a poor choice as they're beside the restaurant and therefore less p...

Good hotel with nice rooms. It is however a bit more pricy than we are used in Thailand though (750B excl breakfast). View on river is nice, beds are good (but hard as usual in Thailand) restaurant serves all styles of food.
