Staying at the Royal Bella Vista Country Club at Chiang Mai was a good experience. The drive to the hotel is a pretty 30 to 40 minutes through the hills. The club is located inside Bella Villa Resort even though there is no signage at the gate to show its existence. Once inside you have the villas and the hotel units. I stayed in one of the hotel units. It is spacious, It has a refrigerator, microwave, kettle and essential cutlery and crockery along with free daily supply od bottled water and coffee mixes and tea bags. You have a Flat screen Tv and a DVD player in the room. The TV doesn't have much programs you may like but is compensated by a good collection of DVD's which they will lent you to watch. Food is good though expensive and the menu is limited and not extensive. However you are in a place over 20 kms to the city and where no public transport is available. So you have to depend solely on the club transport which will charge you 600 THB to the city and another 600 THB to come back. If you are a business traveller, I don't recommend this resort while it is ideal for a family holiday or honey moon.
The staff are all very good mannered and courteous and the house keeping staff keeps your room clean every day.

I along with my wife stayed in Bella Vista for a week this month. We found the place very laid back and quiet with nothing much to do except swimming, walking and spending time at the Gym. The staff as usual was very very polite and helpful. The Resort had a very good swimming pool and Massage parlour and good places to walk. However it was almost 20 Kms from the main town though the resort had their own transport system on payment to take you any where. It is ideally suited for honeymooning couples.

We saw the photos of the resort-bungalows, trees, flowers wooden bridge, river, forest and mountain. We read several blogs, distance from the city was the common grouse. We booked for a week. The two-room bungalow was well furnished- spacious bedroom with attached bathroom (with hot shower), a kitchen with microwave, electric stove, a fridge, plates and cups; a living room with LCD tv, a bbq pit. The resort must have seen the better days, but we never encountered any insects, lizards, rats as mentioned in the blogs. The porch was full of various kinds of shrubs and flowers. The unit was close to the hotel lobby, so the wifi signal was rather strong. House keeping was good, and the lady was very helpful-changing the curtains, bulbs, fixing the door knobs, extra towels and drinking water. They even lent us a few movies. We have no complain at all. The only complaint was when one of us was cut by the swimming pool tile, the staff found an empty first-aid kid, luckily we brought our own handyplast and iodine. Food at the hotel was very expensive, because they charged 17 % service tax. A small bottle Chang beer cost 98 THB, fried rice was nearly 180 THB. As we have read the blogs earlier, we bought the sundries and beers from 7-11.We have pre-charted a van, so we went visiting Chiang Mai daily and up to Chiang Rai.The staffs especially the ladies were all pleasing and helpful. A good piece of advise is come in a group, stock up your goods, charted a van (1800 THB daily) then you will have a wonderful holiday in the mountain.

My wife and I travelled half way round the world November 2012, to Chiang Mai from Jersey C.I. we knew the resort was in the middle of nowhere but no problem, the resort driver stopped at Tesco's on the way for us to pick up some supplies (thank goodness) as there is nothing nearby.
The most disappointing thing was the resort accommodation we were not at Royal Bella Vista Country Club we were at Belle Villa resort and we were just a small part of the resort, the first bungalow we were allocated was probably the worst one on the resort located next to the staff motorcycle parking area, great at 6 o'clock in the morning when they start arriving, the bathroom was filthy the shower was worse the décor was tired but what the heck we had a clean up and got on with it!
We were here for three weeks so lets enjoy the beautiful surroundings, the resort manager was very elusive so trying to get any info was difficult she certainly was not interested in any complaints.
After a week the sewer blocked up and flooded the bathroom so we were moved to another unit a slight improvement on the other (no motorcycles) the bathroom had the same problems and only one ring to cook with which never got fixed in the two weeks we were there.
We hired a scooter, at last we can enjoy Chiang Mai and we did, if we needed a taxi we used a local girl from down the hill she was a lot cheaper and very obliging, great for the supermarket run.
Eating in the resort was okay the staff very nice the food not bad but somehow we still felt as if we were two small fish in a very big pond...

We found the accommodation absolutely fine - we had been a bit spooked by tales of ants/cockroaches etc. We saw a VERY small number of ants and no cockroaches at all. There was a lizard living in the lounge but it was quite nervous of us! Definitely no rats! Everywhere was clean, housekeeping staff came every day, no problems with wet floors etc. We found the bedrooms perfectly fine, mattresses comfy, plenty of pillows.
The resort itself is lovely, though very quiet. There are no longer any elephants on site which is a shame but you can walk 500m to the elephant resort quite easily. Also there is now only one pool and no gym (although it does mention a gym in the welcome pack!) The pool is lovely.
The idea of having Royal Bella Vista within the Belle Ville resort is VERY confusing! The Royal rep has her own office slightly away from the main building and I would agree that you are at the mercy of when she is available. Just one member of staff and she is either there or not there! At the main building they are very pleasant and will help you if they can but they cannot organise trips for you. The Royal rep is very pleasant but does not really have much information outside what she has in the welcome pack - I expected an office stuffed with tourist info/leaflets etc but she only has about 6-8 trips on offer and does not have any links with/experience with any other tour operators. If you want to do other trips you have to fix them up yourself either in Chiang Mai or via the internet.
Some of the tours are quite expensive and if you choose to join a tour which is not actually organised by Royal then it is even more expensive because you have to pay the extra cost of getting down to Chiang Mai (can be £24 for the round trip - that is, for the taxi, not per person.)
I was glad I had read on TA about stopping to pick up supplies on the way from the airport - our driver offered to do this without being asked and did not hurry us at all. It is a huge Tesco with quite a big variety of goods. (Tip - watch out for the licensing hours, can't buy alcohol at the supermarket in the afternoon!) If you join a tour organised by Royal or if they organise a taxi down to Chiang Mai for you, they will again be very happy to stop at Tesco,
I am not sure we have ever stayed at a resort which is quite so cut off before though. There is no local shop to buy a pint of milk, Tesco is 30 mins by car, the nearest 'village' is 2km but does not have a corner shop at all, only roadside stalls. Usually it is nice to just wander out from a resort for a walk around but apart from 500m to the elephants or 2km to the village there really isn't anywhere at all.
This would be a lot better if there was a local bus, or even more regular transport of any sort, down to Chiang Mai.
We only ate in the restaurant once, it was OK though not fantastic. There are just two electric plates on the hob and a microwave in the kitchen so not ideal for cooking much!
We did go on an organised trek and we also did Flight of the Gibbon which was great fun! Visited Chiang Mai and the temples, then just relaxed at the resort.
Sadly, I would not visit this resort again purely because of its remote location :(

This is a long way out of Chiang Mai. Our first impressions were---this would have been 5 star in its day. It is in need of some brushing up to bring it up to a better standard. Our villa had a very musty, damp smell about it and certain areas needed cleaning, eg bathrooms. Also we could hear a rat scratching away at night which was disturbing and a hole in the ceiling that the rat had made. Also work was being done late into the night 30 mtrs from our villa---which made it hard to sleep. The setting was beautiful in the counryside and the 2 pools were the best thing about this resort, especially the pool over the back which was larger and as it was in the low season very quiet. Because of the smell and the rat and noise we moved out after 2 days and went closer to Chiang Mai.
As this was our first trip since joining Royal Resorts we were a little disappointed and hope this is not the norm.

My wife and i went to Thailand in January 2012. We stayed at this resort for our first week. We had a very enjoyable time at this resort with some unexpected experiences. The first thing that you find out when you arrive at this hotel is that it is actually 4 units within the Belle Villa Resort, which is about an hours drive from Chiang Mai central. You will need to arrange transport to this place otherwise is could be hard to find unless you you get lucky with the taxi driver. If you like to cook some of your own food and want to stock up on supplies, eg beer. Then you really need to stop at a shop in Chiang Mai on your way.
There is a small village back towards Chiang Mai about 2km away which is worth checking out and to get some beer and basic groceries, fantastic fresh eggs, you can access it by a track that runs along the hill behind the resort. They also have two beautiful Elephants at the resort and even better if you want the full elephant experience then you can take a walking trail from the resort elephants for about 300 metres around to what is known as the Patara Elephant Farm which is a fantastic experience and they do not have a problem with you just turning up and hanging out with the Elephants. Meals were good although on on the slightly expensive side. there are a couple of resturaunts that will pick you up within driving distance but you need to book early to get in. The hardest thing to organise is the transport to and from the resort. Ideally you would hire scooters otherwise you are at the mercy of the resort in using their taxi, which is fine and the service great but you will just have to pay a little more and pre-arrange it. They do have a bus that runs down to Chiang Mai but it does not stay for long so if yo want to stay for the street markets you need to organise your trip back before hand.
Overall if you are happy to hang out at the resort and just relax, go for walks through beautiful country side and hang out with Elephants with a couple of day trips to Chiang Mai then this place is perfect. I would really like to come back here now that i know what to expect.
