Hotel Locanda Al Castello
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 December 2011

Al Castello is a family-owned hotel located within walking distance to the center of Cividale and the Cividale train station. The rooms were very nice and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The dining at the hotel was amazing. There was spa and tennis courts which we didn't have time to use.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed the same.

beautiful old building is kind of ruined inside with very bright lighting, dated decor. nice proprietor gave us a lovely big room with a wrap around balcony that overlooked the friulian plain. the radiator was broken in the full heat position however and we had to ask twice for him to fix it. He came up though no problem and tried to fix them but had to turn off the main circulation switch. We had to open all the windows due to the extreme heat from the radiaotrs but then bugs came in so we had to keep the room totally dark. it was actually pretty romantic if inconvenient. The dinner was excellent, I had Branzino and a seafood antipasto mix. really fresh and delicious. friendly waitresses. the bed was completely uncomfortable though and sagged dramatically in the middle, making it difficult to sleep. Also, it is very loud in the corridor and we were awoken by loud talking in the hall several times. breakfast was ok. I think this hotel was pretty overpriced for the overall experience, esp as it is quite far (need a car)from the historic centre of Cividale del Friuli. I was expecting it to be about half of what it actually cost. def wouldn't stay again.

Yes It is indeed on top of the hill in Cividale del Friuli and hence if you dont have a car you may find it difficult. However I spend a whole week there for a conference in Udine and I was without a car and I was so fine with walking through the vineyards in the region. It only takes a 15-18 min walk to train station and and about 20-22 min walk to Cividale center. (Walking back to the hotel is tougher though)

The whole atmoshpere of the hotel was so mesmerizing that I could not even think of trying the SPA, massage etc stuff. All I did was sitting in their beautiful terrace and having coffee, tea and watching the sunset on the Friuli fields.

Foodwise, it was even better! They have a delicious lamb dish (I think I had that one 3-4 times) and since you are in north, you should not miss trying prosciutto a san daniele (san daniele ham). I have been told they consider two types of ham there: parma and san daniele. San daniele tastes just so delicious. Goes also well with asparagus but they have two dishes like that (ham and asparagus)! And one of them has too much olive oil and parmesan cheese. Might feel a little too salty. Beware.

I think you might have the most relaxed vacation of your lifetime if you are not the type of tourist who would run to Eiffel tower as first thing to do in Paris. Just take your time, relax and listen to the birds singing on the way down to Cividale and after a walk over the old bridge come back to your hotel and have some nice coffee or some delicious local wine. Its your call.

The hotel is run by a family I believe and they are just so kind and cheery and helpful. Although I was not there for vacation, by mistake I found my perfect vacation spot!!

Located some 1,5 km from Cividale center, on a steep hill. Forget having dinner in the village center and then climbing back up to the hotel. You will need a car or a cab.
Former castello, recently extended with modern hotel rooms (ask for one of those) and a small but well made spa (2 saunas, steam bath, small indoor pool, indoor and outdoor jaccuzi, sufficient number of recliners). Parking on site for free.
The room offered a nice view of the Friulian plain. It was rather large for Italian hotel rooms, clean and had the basic amenities. However, it was really old with a creaky bed and well worn furniture / bathroom.
Hotel restaurant with quite good food but some limitations (several dishes not available).
Service was grumpy but efficient, don't bother asking for advice on dinner / sightseeing choices.
Summary: OK but why not look for alternatives with better value?
