“A Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

We loved Phophonyane mainly because of its location with its fantastic views and good walking trails. The road to the lodge is a bit bumpy but not too bad and well worth the effort. We stayed in cottage 3, although the decor was a little tired it was clean, roomy and very comfortable. The main lodge had a lovely ambience and we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner which was good. We were well looked after during our two night stay and will definitely return sometime in the future.

Mice in the beehive. Ants in the bed. Not good.
Other than that ? First morning at the breakfast : no fruits "You are too late for fruits". Second morning : no fruits "You are too early for fruits". Not good.
Remote and not much to do.

The drive in is a bit grim (clear cut forests) but once into the preserve, it is very nice — and a good change of pace from what you have probably been doing (game preserves etc) during your trip.

Green, lush, mountainous. We quite enjoyed the various trails in the preserve. Some were a bit of a challenge with was an unexpected but pleasant surprise.

The lodge is nice, not luxurious but covers all the bases, and the staff were good, the owner helpful and friendly, and the cook quite good — not gourmet style but very satisfying and well cooked meals.

(Dinner: The trick we learned is that one not only needs to make a verbal “reservation” early in the evening, but also to choose one’s meal at that time. We didn’t do this the first night and had to wait a little when we wanted to eat. No problem. Worth the wait.)

The Beehive room was interesting and kinda cool, but for more than two nights, the low doors etc might have gotten old. No complaints for a short stay.

The clientele were in keeping with the idea of an upscale ecolodge -- ie, the kind of people LP caters to, and who choose the splurge options in LP.

If you are passing through this area of Swaziland, it is a good place to visit, for sure. The roads in and out are not great but workable -- just DON'T follow the Google map directions which will take you on some horrible roads.

We only stayed 1 night in a tent. The tent was really comfortable with kettle and comfortable beds (better than some hotels we stayed at).

The lodge is very remote at the end of a 7km track in a remote area of Swaziland. If you like peace and quiet you will love this lodge. It is next to a beautiful waterfall with a natural pool and another hotel pool on site.

The hotel helped us out with a problem we had with our car and we are forever grateful for their help in sorting it out!

The location of this lodge is stunning, and the walks around the waterfalls were a great activity, although we did complete them all in 1.5 days so were left with little to do there after that!
We payed extra to stay in their beehive accommodation and I was surprised at the cleanliness of it, and a bit disappointed. Whilst it has the wow factor initially that soon disappears and the prospect of a stay in a hut that has an extremely large number of ants in was not a pleasant one. There was a coffee/tea station in the room, but they had forgotten the coffee. The shower was hot and pleasant, however the toilet had a window behind without a blind, so people walking past could easily see in!
The food was great, and the two ladies in the kitchen were really lovely people. They always wore a smile and greeted us on arrival.
Apart from the walks there really is nothing else here, which led to a lot of card games, and chess! Looking back, it was nice to have 3 days of doing nothing, but when you are looking for adventure, we felt a bit disappointed. I would recommend a 1 night stay and I think you would really enjoy it but not any longer than that.

The grounds were simply amazing and we loved the waterfalls and walks. We were slightly disappointed with the accommodation and some of the service we received with the price of the stay, however overall it was a great experience. The dinner service was painfully slow but fortunately the food was good quality. It was the winter season and there was perhaps a slightly lower staffing level that night due to the number of guests. Our lodge was slightly dated in all honesty and would benefit from a revamp in order to improve my customer satisfaction. However, it was relaxing to fall asleep gently hearing the waterfall in the distance from where we stayed and great to find our filthy car washed for us in the morning when we checked out!

We loved our stay in Beehive #2 at Phophonyane Falls. Granted, it was unusual, but that was part of the charm for us. The bed was nice, the room was warm enough (we turned the radiator heater on when we got to the room), and we had everything we needed for a very comfortable and unique stay. The resort itself was beautiful and meticulously maintained, the food was delicious, and the service was excellent. We took an enjoyable hike down to and around the falls before we departed in the morning, and wished we had allocated more time to explore the nature preserve further. Although it was a bit off the beaten path, we had no difficulty navigating the 3km dirt road to get to the falls -- even though it was raining when we arrived and we were driving a tiny Honda Jazz. I highly recommend a stay at Phophonyane Falls to anyone who wants to see a beautiful part of Swaziland during their trip to southern Africa.
