“Very noisy. Nice building.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2011

It is a great building yes - wonderful cobbled courtyard and old stone interior including a charming spiral staircase.

The rooms are basic and cheaply furnished, but then the place is pretty cheap so that's ok. What is not ok is the noise levels in the bedrooms throughout the night. Most of this comes from other rooms, including the communal areas. Every creak of the floorboards, every flush of the toilet, every sneeze and cough ... you want to hear what other guests are up to? This is your place.

Restaurant prices were steep so better to eat in town.

In short, this place needs soundproofing of bedrooms and a bit of investment in the room and then it would be a four or five star place.

I also have a spider the size of a man's hand in my bathroom but these things happen ...

Less than half an hour from Cherbourg, Valognes is the obvious place to spend the night if you catch the afternoon ferry from Portsmouth. We have stayed at this hotel almost annually for over ten years and watched its evolution from a very basic, run-down place through a few make-overs and countless changes of ownership. The building itself dominates any attempt at upgrading. Being an ex-coaching- inn, there is nowhere to build a lift, and one of the staircases is spiral - not easy to lug one's suitcase up or down. That notwithstanding, it is a charming place if you can re-set your expectations. The dining-room has great charm - large mirrors (sadly covered in ghastly paintings for sale currently), chandeliers and pretty, not grandiose, furnishings. Some of the bedrooms can be fairly plain, with small bathrooms, but they are not expensive.
What I most regret is the change of cuisine. Our first meal there was a wonderful, almost Elizabeth David style meal of simple dishes, attractive and tasty. Every new owner since has tried to gentrify the food, and make it more fashionable, to the detriment of gustatory pleasure. Less emphasis on the look of the food and more on its flavour, please.

Room Tip: The cheaper ones will be smaller, but a more spacious one may offer no better facilities.

This is a traditional French hotel, once a coaching inn with lots of evidence of that era. Some attempts have been made to refurbish it but not too successfully. The room we tayed in (No. 1) was cold and seemed damp; equiped with one of the smallest bathrooms we have seen on dry land. The staff were friendly and the service in the restaurant good....the food wasn't too good. There is better accomodation and value to be had in 'three chimney' Logis hotels as oppsed to this hotel's 'two chimneys'. Best avoided unless desperate....as we were.

Our room was small and badly furnished. The bathroom had an antiquated shower with a broken shower head. The door to the shower left a small gap to squeeze into. The shower cubicle was dirty - the joints at base of screen and tray were black with mildewed mould. (I wiped a towel over it - IT WAS BLACK).
The room number was 15. If I had not left a credit card number I would have walked out.
In a word - terrible.

Great big clean room for a family of 4 that was just the ticket for our stop the night before catching the ferry at Cherbourg. I would stay here for longer given the chance.

The bar round the corner had a live band which was a bit noisy (someone else has mentioned this) but I went round to listen and had a couple of beers.

Hotel is very old and charming with a complicated access to the car park. All the original features still exist.

Stayed for one night en route to the ferry from Cherbourg. Family room was very nice with a lovely shower in the ensuite. Very noisy though, room (No 2) was on the road and was surprisingly noisy late at night and in the morning. Also could hear other guests coming to their rooms late at night and the plumbing all seemed to be routed via the wall by our bed. Surprisingly thin walls for such an old hotel and the curtains barely covered the windows and let in the street lights.

We only stayed here one night - had stayed here before though about 8 years ago.
We booked half board so the price (90€) included evening meal & breakfast. The room was small but comfortable - The hotel is in a lovely old building. The meal was OK - my main course was good, my partners less so. The staff were friendly.
Tip - check out the carpark in the old barn at the back before you drive in there. We drove in discovered it was full and had a real problem manouvering out again
