“Basic hotel, great restaurant, good location, a little noisy”
Reviewed 1 May 2013

Two nights here after two at Ferme la Raconniere, so a change of quality but much much cheaper.

The hotel itself is pretty basic and needs a thorough redecoration but has a faded elegance.

The restaurant is really good and a very pleasant surprise, with delicious Norman dishes and great puddings.

Rooms are basic and tired but the ceilings are tall and it's good value overall.

There was some sort of festival going on with lots of cyclists and fireworks so we had a great couple of nights in Valognes.

Nice and close to the catamaran terminal too.

Room Tip: Avoid noisy rooms facing the main street if you want any sleep.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights at the end of our journey through france, we have stayed here on 2 other occasions, the rooms are very basic but clean, the building is a former coachhouse and has a fantastic stone spiral staircase, Wi-fi is ok although a little slow, the village of Valognes is ok too not very pretty but a few shops and bars etc. However the highlight of the stay here is the Restaurant, there is 3 set munu's the dearest being 37.50 euro for 5 courses but you also get little tasters in-between each course the restaurant is very elegantly decorated and by far the best we had been in as we travelled around france. i cannot praise the staff in the restaurant enough, the lady who's name i forget was very charming and helpful and certainly made choosing from the menu very easy. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area, if they are prepared to lower their standards in the room but definitely the restaurant is of 5 star quality.

Room Tip: go for a dearer room if you want more comfort and if you cant climb stairs ask for one on the lower...

We were warmly welcomed and we were able to park the bike in the garage, the room was very basic and no kettle or cups in room, we had to go down to the bar for a cup of coffee! The restaurant has little choice and is too up market for the hotel.

We have stayed in this 17th century former coaching inn many times as it is very convenient for our purpose. The latest dates being the 15th and then the 19th of September. We arrived fairly late on the 15th so were unable to have dinner as the kitchen closes at 9.15pm. On the way up to our room two out of three of the timed lights did not work, hooray for the torch on my mobile phone enabling me to see to put the key in the door. We always book a standard room (60 euros) on floor 2 if possible as this is quiet. If you pay more for a superior room overlooking the street it is very noisy very early in the morning.
Beware when driving the car into the car park, a former stable, as the entrance is narrow and some drivers have scraped their car against the garage doors. This time the automatic light system was not working and the garage was pitch black. Expect bird splats on your car from roosting pigeons.
The rooms have been redecorated and are a reasonable size for a two star hotel. There is an adequate bathroom which has a shower which must be held in one hand whilst soaping oneself with the other, as the shower head does not attach to the wall. There is no plug in the wash basin or grill over the plughole either, so do not drop anything in the basin or you will need a plumber. (This in both rooms 20 and 18).
Breakfast (9.50euros) is the standard bread, croissants and jam, with ham, cheese and yoghurt, perfectly adequate.
This is not a smart tourist hotel so only 2 staff speak English and may not be on duty if you need them. Best to be able to speak some French if you stay here. The building is old and for us full of charm, it is clean and it is cheap.
We laugh at it's idiosyncrasies and will be staying here again, but if they would upset you don't stay here.

We stayed here for one night after driving from Bayonne with a van full of our possessions, which we quickly discovered wouldn't fit through the archway leading to the car park, so had to leave all of our wordly goods on the street overnight!

Our room was up a spiral staircase, very tiny with an even tinier bathroom, but to be honest, we were so tired we didn't care. The saving grace for us was the restaurant, we had an amazing meal and the waitress spoke perfect English and was very attentive and friendly.

We had booked the hotel through lastminute.com online and paid for it. However, on checkout we were told that the hotel hadn't been paid by them and we were to pay again. We had no time to argue as we had to catch a ferry so paid up. To date it still hasn't been refunded.

Will probably stay here again on one of our trips, but mainly for the restaurant and the charming town.

We were warmly welcomed and helped to park the car in the rear courtyard which was difficult to access. The hotel was clearly past its best- faded carpets, strange smells in the corridors, bathroom very basic with no soap, bed hollowed in the middle and lots of noise both from within the hotel and from the street outside. The restaurant was charming and typically French, and it was like a snapshot from fifty years ago, apart from the rather naff modern paintings for sale which covered all the mirrors. The cuisine was very good and served by very helpful waiters. This is not a tourist hotel, and there are no frills. Non French speakers might have difficulty here. Breakfast was basic and limited in choice. In sum, OK for passing through, but not comfortable enough for a long stay. Lack of soundproofing or any air conditioning was a big issue for us- opening the window let in the noises from the street. Average experience.

A wonderful old hotel but not at its best. Great location in Valognes with amazing parking in old stables, but the bedrooms are very basic - infact, need modernising. Staff are most friendly and speak English fluently. Restaurant is set in time but the food is excellent. If you can accept the basic bedroom, its a reasonable hotel in a good location with great food. Overpriced.
