“Beautiful Resort”
Reviewed 24 January 2011

We have been to many different places and would have to rate this resort as one of the highest on our list. The staff were super friendly and there were lots of them, so you never had to wait long for service. This resort was a bit different as it had unlimited a la cartes and we never had to make a reservation. The buffet was just as fantastic and the choices were plenty. The quality of the food was fantastic and we dined on sushi and steak's almost everyday. The rooms were huge and were cleaned everyday. The beaches at this resort weren't as nice as Cuba or some places in Mexico as they were a bit narrow. They did have 3 which made it easier to find a quiet place to relax. There was also a reef that was accessible right off the beach so you were able to snorkel right at the resort. It was fun and relaxing. There was always something to do. It was refreshing that Jamaican's speak english. We never had a hard time communicating. We took a day trip to Negril. Margrittaville and Rick's Cafe. Both neat to see, but very very busy. We expected it and enjoyed every minute anyways.

Having posted a couple of quick comments in Trip Adviser before and having two hours to kill at Montego Bay I thought that I would write a slightly more expansive report on the Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton as many of the reports on this site seem to moan about everything. We came out on the 4th Jan for 2 weeks and have had a great and relaxing holiday. As with most holidays, there were a few little glitches but nothing like the stories we have seen on here.
Arrival – Got here at around 6pm after a bit of a wait at the arrival airport for everyone to clear immigration. Not a problem though – it was warm! Only a 45 minute trip to the hotel where we were met with a big smile and checked in with no fuss and rum punches in hand. We were taken by cart to the room, again by friendly bell boys.
The Room – Having already e-mailed to get a good sea view room, we were allocated room 3428 overlooking Sunset Cove. It was a lovely room and as advertised. There was a bit of a musty smell (that seemed to emanate from the aircon) but we got used to it after about a day and a half and it was not a problem. Remember, it is a sub-tropical climate.
The bed was not uncomfortable although some of the pillows were a little hard. We asked the maid (Samantha, who was lovely) for two more and got them straight away and one was very soft so little problem sorted. There is a safe in the room that will take a medium sized laptop and other valuables. The aircon at first appeared not to work very well – until we realised that you have to have the balcony and front doors shut before it kicks in. The Jacuzzi was very big and got a lot of use! The shower is fab, def a power shower & will cure any hangover in a few minutes!!!
Food – A lot of reports criticise the food but we can honestly say it was very good. As the resort was not full, not all of the A la Carte restaurants were open every night. Rather than moan about it, just accept it and go to the ones you want when they are open. We only tried Bubbas, Regaetoni and the Poseidon as the food was great in all three. Other nights we used the buffet which had something for everyone. The buffet food is not cordon bleu and does not profess to be. It is mass catering buffet food but plentiful and varied. The waits at the a la carte varied, particularly in the second week as the resort was much busier than the first. The longest we waited was 40 minutes for Bubbas but they give you a pager and you just go to the bar for a couple of drinks to wait the call. You are on holiday in laid back Jamaica so just go with it. We could hear some complaining about the wait and having a go at the staff which is quite sad really. We particularly like Reggaetoni (Italian theme) and the strip-loin beef and lobster ravioli and also the Filet-Mignon in Bubbas. Breakfasts are varied and plentiful with everything from eggs to order, bacon and sausages to pancakes to fruit to cereal. It does remain to be seen how they cope with waiting when the resort is full.
Staff and tips – Some comment has been made on this site of the attitude of the staff and how unfriendly they can be. We found them all very friendly and always smiling. There were a few that were a little offish but only around 5% of the total staff. Tips can be an issue if you let it be. Due to obsessive tipping by the Americans in particular, it is somewhat expected. We tipped the bell boys and the maid and that was it. Some may say mean but you have paid for an all-inclusive holiday and that includes gratuities. Some were tipping a dollar a drink and that can work out a lot of money after 2 weeks.
Pools and Beaches – There is one huge pool and two smaller ones plus the pools in the spa (included in the price). The only adverse comment would be that the main pool is quite cold due to its size. After about five minutes it is fine but please get past the toe dipping stage! The main beach is not that good with course sand and a lot of coral. However, if you go to Sunset Cove, there is soft sand, good swimming, watersports and the great Jerk Chicken shack. Snorkling is good when the water is clear and we saw a large stingray, lion fish (don’t touch!), squid, Octopus, small Barracuda and a host of smaller fish. Please be aware there are quite a few sea urchins not too far from the shore. There is an adults only pool and beach where topless bathing is allowed. All beaches and pools have dedicated bars. The spa pool is warm & great for a dip just before you go back to your room to get ready for dinner. My wife had a Swedish massage in the spa and said it was fantastic and totally relaxed her.
Walking around – The resort is big (biggest in Jamaica) and has two halves – Lady Hamilton and Jamaica. Some have complained about the distances between the various places around the site including one that complained that they got blisters having to walk so far (!!!!!!!). It is rubbish, we walked (well strolled) from Sunset cove to the end of the Jamaica side in 10 minutes. From the room to the main restaurants was a 5 minute walk, if that. Some people were calling for the bell boys carts to drive them 300 yards. Fine for the disabled but for fit folk just plain lazy! There is never a rush to get anywhere so just amble and enjoy the beautifully kept grounds.
Trips – Be careful – some a real rip-offs. We did the Negril shopping plus Ricks Café which was a trip to two rubbish expensive shopping malls (about 10 shops each) and a craft market that we never got to! Ricks was good though with a great atmosphere & cliff diving. The Cool Runnings trip to Dunnes Fall was an even bigger disappointment. A three hour coach drive to Ocho Rios to pick up a Catamaran then ‘sail’ about a quarter of a mile from the start to snorkel with the other two Catamarans. Thus around 150 people in the water and you have to wear a life jacket! Dunnes fall was good and worth the climb up it but we only got 45 minutes there. Zip-Lining was brilliant though – 2 hours or so just up from Montego Bay. Freddie our guide was fantastic & had us all singing & laughing. Well worth the money for the experience.
Tips
1. Take a lockable beach safe (google – travel\beach safe, cost about £20 & well worth the money). We heard one lady complaining that her camera had been stolen on the beach. We locked i-pods and camera in the small case and locked it to a fixed palm shade each time. We did have a laser mouse stolen from the room but had failed to lock it in the safe. There are a lot of staff milling around the rooms but if you use the safe you will be fine.
2. If you like coffee, the in-room percolators are good but the creamer not so! Take an empty water bottle to breakfast and fill with milk and then pop it in your fridge.
3. If you have not kept beach towels from the previous day, go to the beach or pool early to get one and then go for breakfast. They do sometimes run out of towels.
4. DO NOT go to the Grand Palladium Travel Club presentation that you will undoubtedly be pestered into. We spent over 3 hours with them, with my wife nearly in tears, after a lot of hard sell pressure to try and get us to part with over £10,000 to join the club and that was a minimum spend! If you are interested and have the cash fine, but if you would have no intention of joining then don’t waste valuable holiday time.
5. Take a couple of cheap plastic mugs/glasses or insulated cups. The bars all serve take away drinks in small plastic beakers. They are quite happy to fill whatever you give them! If you decide to buy it there, a plastic drinks bottle will cost you about £8.00 (that you would spend £1.50 on in the UK)
Summary – A great holiday in a very nice resort. A couple of glitches as I have said, but none really to get excited about nor, more to the point, to ruin your holiday. Get laid back and into the Caribbean spirit and have fun. Please feel free to e-mail for anything else.

We got married here. It was out of this world. I cannot for the life of me understand what some people moan at. This place is heaven. The jamaican people are lovely and never stop trying to make your holiday. The hotel is spotless. Food is great. Beaches are beautiful. So dont listen to the negative feedback because if people do want to venture out of their hotel then id say dont go to jamaica. The hotel is a resort in itself absolute paradise. No problem.

Well what can i say about this wonderful place. It was our first time in Jamaica and to boot we decided to get married at the Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton Resort & Spa. We arrived a few days earlier than the rest of our 60 guests that we had booked in. I could go on and on about how wonderful the hotel is but what i'm going to do is break it down point from... Check this out!!

Amazing Things
-The ride to the hotel... you need to stop by the COLD BEER "JOINT" stand and purchase a beer and bob for the road.

-The bell dudes.. ask for Jimmy and tell him that Dustin recommended you to him. If you want to completely surprise him take him a pair of sanuk hemp shoes and he'll be your personal driver for the rest of your holiday. He new our name with in minutes of our trip and didn't forget it as we had asked for rides to our Honey moon suit.

- The Honey Moon suit was so amazing, excellent view and huge room. My favorite part of the room was the Tiger shower head. So awesome. The rest of our guests had the regular rooms and they were still great and again not one complaint. The only situation one of our people had was grey water had entered there room from the ceiling. It was a piping problem and so they had changed rooms without any problem.

-The maids were very great, cleaned the room and put different designs on the bed everyday.

-The Hotel was great, it was easy to get around and if you do your research before you get there you will understand the layout and you'll be able to pick up the little short cuts to and from different areas of the resort. Short cuts are key... know them. Very clean.

-The Bars. It seemed like there was a bar every 25 feet. Your drink was never empty and they always tasted great. There are some areas where they service premium booze like Windsor Rye. The bar tenders were extremely alert and were ready to mix you another one. I highly recommend going to the Casino and hang out with Cleaon the Jenga King. ha. Thats what he thought after my sister in law beat him 2 out of 3 times. Go see him its a must!! Of course like any other resort tipping is always "respected". The average wage in Jamaica is approximately 50 per week. You'll get much better service if you do tip.

-Simone the wedding planner. Like i said we got married down there and of course we had a ton of questions for her when we got there. She answered them in 5 minutes. Extremely helpful and if i was the manager i would give her a raise.

-The beaches were so amazing, clear water not a whole lot of people and food was close by. The adult beach is a little rocky but thats why its the best place to snorkel. Plus its an adult beach and well there are some good looking people that hang out there!!

-Food, i was traveled the world and to many resorts and i have to say that i did not once get sick of the food. The buffet was different everyday and so delicious. Not one complaint from me or one of my 60 guests, all extremely happy!!

-Spa, my mom sent me and my new wife to the spa the morning of our wedding. It was so amazing, they scrubbed our bodies down and they we both went out side into this romantic shower to clean off. Again it was the tiger head shower so hot! Then they massaged us for over an hour. It don't think it was cheap but all i can say it was worth it. There is also a spa pool that everyone in the resort can use and there was no one around when we went. A great place for a romantic afternoon with your other half.

-Staff, every single staff member you passed along the way to where ever were extremely friendly and not because they have to. You can see it in there eye when you chat with them that they love there job and will do whatever you need them to do. I not once had attitude from any of the staff for anything i had asked for. Very safe and it seemed like there had been security walking around making sure things were running smoothly.

Video Camera Live feed, one thing we really enjoyed were the live feeds of the beach volleyball area/ pool/ hotel and the sunset beach shot. We got up every morning and had watched the feeds and that had got us pumped up!!

The Improvements
The only negative thing that our group could come up with is the beach volleyball courts. The resort needs to filter the sand and remove any rock/coral mixed in. They either need to till the sand below but from what i had seem is there is concrete as the bottom base and so if thats the case they need to regularly push the sand from the outsides of the court to the middle and add much more softer/ finer sand. On a side note our group had been challenged by a few of the entertainment staff to play volleyball against them and so i put a team together and school the Jamaicans 3 sets to zero. ha great fun and showed them a little Canadian vball skill.

Tips for next time and things to take
BUBBA KEGS, i don't have to save anything else... just do it... go big.
There are ipod docks in the rooms, we didn't use them because we brought the bose
Phoning back home is expensive
Laptops had been used to download pics and to play all our wedding music
No problems with the resorts sound system it worked great!! We had our BoseSoundock10 as the backup. Awkward to carry around but we managed.
We brought our own volleyballs and left them for the resort so the Jamaicans would remember us and the beating they took. ha. All in good fun!
We brought our own snorkel gear, i'm not a fan of using community stuff so if your going to go buy your own and you can use it at your own leisure.

All in all it was by far the best hotel and resort i have ever stayed at. Mexico was my favorite but i just found a new home!! I can't wait to go back MON!!!!

first the cons the rooms are extremely musty and moldy very hard to breathe if you have asthma. pillows are unbearable bring your own. beaches are not comparible to others in jamaica these are very small and not pristine. food absolutley sucks. entertainment is way too raunchy not kid friendly at all!. location of the hotel is too far from anything else its not in a great spot. bad workmanship hotel needs major repairs looks pretty but look close you'll see holes in the ceiling cracked glass above your head very dangerous
too many cats if your allergic thier all over we even saw one on the food table for the beach bbq. now the pros, people are very helpful and extremely friendly, staff were fast we never had to wait. spa was priced low and amazing! rooms are large. bartenders pour nonstop! the beach bbq was picture perfect so beautiful.
for the price we paid it wasnt worth it the beach and food and location ruined it for us. our trip was good mostly because we left the resort for 2 days and got out on the island there is so much to do and see. jamaica is a beautiful island to explore just be safe.also while your at an all inclusive hotel does not mean you do not tip we tipped always its just common sense tip for the service you recieve no matter where u go.

grand palladium was our first "all inclusive" vacation. we went w/ two kids, age 2 and 11 and our friends, also a couple w/ kids, age 3 and 9.
the resort grounds were ok. large and pleasantly laid out. the beach was ok. really nothing spectacular and not very clean.
the pools were just ok too. good large size though. plenty of room to actually swim. the pool-side waterfalls worked according to their own schedule. hit or miss.
the food was mediocre at best. the service at the restaurants- non-existant. i guess it's typical for jamaica. they just have no idea of what it means to be a waiter. the very meaning of the word i think escapes them.
no kids activities. at all.
drinks sucked.
room service always late.
overall, 2/5 star resort.

This was our first and most defiantly not my last trip to Jamaica. I enjoyed my stay and the views where wonderful. If you have a chance upgrade to the bungalows worth every $. Ignore all the negative reviews the resort is surrounded bye beautiful oceans all around. Water shoes are handy but not a must sunset cove is the only beach you can go in without water shoes. Have a great time worth the money food is OK not great Buba's steakhouse and Lotus are a must. Went with a group of 20 for wedding the wedding day was perfect couldn't have asked for anything better.
