Hotel Kristall
Ranked #3 of 10 Hotels in Finkenberg
Reviewed 27 February 2014

This year we spent our annual winter holiday in Finkenberg and Hotel Kristal. A room with a tiny separate beadroom is very convenient for a small family especially if you stay more than few days. The rooms are quite silent and the view to the Mayrhofen is very relaxing. Breakfast and dinner were brilliant and the kitchen could also provide gluten free diet versions of the meals which is not a standard in all restaurants in Central Europe! During the afternoon hours there were also a light snack available for the half board customers. Finkenberg is a small village but after 8 hours skiing we had no need to move outside hotel property! For Hintertux ski bus stop you need to take only a few steps across the street and bus takes you to just 50 meter distance from Hintertux lifts after 25 minutes drive. Local Finkenberg almbahn station (lift to nearby Penken slopes) requires few minutes walk up to mid village. Finkenberg almbahnen lift is quite pleasent ride compared Mayrhofen's crowded Penkenlift! While returning from lift you can ski down to the hotel if there is enough snow - this year wasn't. Vielen Dank und auf Wiedersehen Hotel Kristal Team!

Ate here with my wife and children

We are staying at local apartment and had been recommended Kristall by the owner

We ate garlic king prawns and Caesar salads followed by a really nice Corden Bleu, fillet steak and two made to order grilled chicken dishes for the kids

Little to fault

Friendly and attentive service too

I can recommend

Enjoyed a four night stay at the Kristall in Finkenberg 03 March 2013.

We booked with the hotel direct and flew to Innsbruck with Easyjet and then took the bus from outside the arrivals hall directly to the railway station in Innsbruck (Euro1.80 per person one way) and then a nice scenic train ride to Mayrhofen via Jenbach costing Euro12.40 per person each way.

From Mayrhofen it's a five/ten minute taxi ride up the mountain to the hotel which cost Euro12 each way.
A taxi from Innsbruck airport direct to Finkenberg and the hotel would cost about Euro120 each way and would take you about one hour. As there was just two of us and we had no skis it made more sense and much cheaper too to do it by bus and train and was very straightforward and easy.

As the previous reviewer said the hotel is just a five minute walk up the steep hill to the Gondola.
We hired our ski equipment from the Sport Stock hire shop which is across the street from the Kristall. Very good equipment and service. (Book online and they give you a 10% discount).
We were able to leave our skis in the ski school office at the top of the mountain at the end of each day so walking to and from the lift station to the hotel was not a problem.

We booked a type Ahorn room (room 206 which I think is the actual room used in the hotels own website on its 360* tour) and had a shower (no bath) and a separate wc. Nice touch was the double sink and underfloor heating in the shower room. All very clean.
Flat screen television( no English language channels).

The food was very good.
You are allocated a table for the duration of your stay. Did not need to share tables with other guests.
Breakfast was from 0730 to 0930.Huge buffet (fantastic choice of breads!) all the usual continental fare but with boiled and scrambled eggs and bacon should you want them.
Flasks of coffee were already on the table when you came down for breakfast and should you want more you had only to ask.
Orange juice and Vitamin juice were from a machine and there is a large selection of help yourself teas.
The thing we would say about the service at breakfast is that there seemed to be only one member of staff put on duty at breakfast to look after the whole of the breakfast service so getting their attention could be a bit hit and miss and no one clears away plates whilst you are eating.
Dinner was very good and service on the whole also very good though you could wait some time in-between courses. The hotel has more staff on duty in the evening and they were very friendly and most spoke some English.
Dinner was four courses plus salad buffet and the main course was chosen at breakfast from three choices(one vegetarian).
In the afternoon after skiing the hotel also offered a snack and cakes which was great.
The ski and boot room was good though the heated boot warmers never seemed to warm the boots.
Finkenberg allows easy access to the skiing areas but without the crowds of nearby Mayrhofen.

Room Tip: Our room was quiet and had lovely views towards Mayrhofen.

Wonderful friendly hotel

We spent a week at the Hotel Kristall and we loved it.
We chose the resort and hotel after a lot of research. We wanted Austria for the delicious food served in the mountain restaurants and the early evening après ski. My husband boards while I ski, we're both intermediate to advanced. We didn't want to be in Mayrhofen because we prefer a smaller village style resort and we don't like the idea of only one access to the mountain from such a large town with long queues possible at the gondola. We also hate the thought of taking a ski bus to and from the mountain.
So Finkenberg being five minutes along the road from Mayrhofen with its own seated gondola and no queuing with easy access to full Mayrhofen ski area was the perfect choice for us, although to be honest quieter than we expected. There is very little going on. A couple of shops and bars (couple meaning about two). It was fine for us as Mayrhofen is 5 mins and 12 euros in a taxi with lots going on.

The ski area accessed from the finkenberg gondal (which is Eggalm, Penken and Hoberg) was more than enough for us. We didn't feel the need or could be bothered with the hassle of taking a bus to the other areas covered with lift pass. Our favourite runs were red 27 and red 7on the Horberg and the red 2/4 on Eggalm. But beware, leave plenty of time to get back to the Finkenberg area in time for the lifts closing as it 4pm sharp as it can take 45 minutes to get back. We got caught out one day and had to take the gondola down to Mayrhofen then the ski bus back to Finkenberg. A nightmare journey we swore never to repeat.
As for the The Hotel Kristall. We chose this hotel for its good reviews on TA and because it was closest to the gondola. About five minute walk up steep hill. Not too bad. Good warm up before hitting slopes. On the bright side you can ski down to hotel from Gondola (not enough snow to ski down to village) right to the boot room.
The hotel is wonderful. All the food was fabulous and exceeded all expectations. staff very friendly, lovely waitress named Beada (thank you Beada) although we were the only British couple in the hotel it didn't bother us, we felt quite at home. We had a lovely room on the third floor with great balcony, big bathroom, robe and slippers provided. Toiletries in bathroom very basic bring your own. Hotel was always roasting. You just need t-shirt to breakfast and dinner. People tended not to wear salopetts to breakfast. Evening casual wear but not fleeces or ski wear, more jeans and blouse/ smart t-shirt, casual boots/trainers not walking boots/shoes. Big bonus was the hotel is a non smoking hotel.
Be warned the spa area is naked and mixed sex. But you've go to just go with the flow. I found It quite liberating. And you can't beat a sauna/steam room after a day skiing.
I did ask at reception for a guide round spa and explanation of rules etc as any information was in German, No tour was given, all I was told was no swimwear was allowed, so we were on our own. I would have been happier with a guide round and told the what to do and what not to do to save us any embarrassment (the white hose in steam room was for hosing down seat before and after use, I think). After a week of daily spa sessions the most uncomfortable experience was when we came to use the spa and found two couples in there wearing swim wear. Taking your clothes off in front of strangers of the opposite sex takes a bit of getting use to, but taking them off in front of someone of the opposite sex with their swimwear on is mortifying. Which takes me back to hotel providing information to all nationalities to save embarrassment on both sides.
We booked with Crystal and found them very helpful and pleasant. They arrange plenty of social events off and on the piste if you enjoy company. The off piste events are based in Mayrhofen and you are expected to get your own way there and back.
All in all excellent holiday.

We have just returned from our skiing holiday in Finkenberg, staying at the Hotel Kristall. When we arrived we had a good welcome and were made to feel at home immediately.
Our room was a good size and very clean with a good size bathroom with twin wash basins. We had an amazing view from our balcony looking straight down the valley towards Mayrhofen. There were gowns and slippers provided in the room and the beds were comfortable.
When we went down to the restaurant we were shown to our table, the lighting was bit bright and the tables seemed a bit close together. The food all week was very good and plentiful. At about 3.00pm or when we came off the piste there was always a snack available in the restaurant, this was very welcome and more than enough, so there is no need to eat on the mountain.
Every one of the staff were excellent, helpful and friendly, nothing was to much trouble, there was not a lot of English spoken but this was not a problem.
The one slight complaint was the walk up to the ski lift, it was up a slope for about 200 yards. There is a bus to catch but it is not the ski bus(green line), it is the local bus which stops slightly down the road. Other hotels run their own mini buses and I think the Kristall should think about it. Of course the benefit of the slope is that when you have finished for the day you can ski back to the door no problem.
If you are hiring skis I would recommend hiring from Leonard Stock sports which is opposite the hotel about 50 yards away, if you are travelling with Crystal as far as I know they don't use them so you may have longer walk.
The village is pretty with a church, a couple of après ski bars and a super market, that is pretty much it, we loved it. The ski area was excellent with no queuing and good snow.
We recommend this hotel and may well go back

Think it says enough that we return year after year...
Hotel is price/quality very good and i recommend it to everyone who wants a comfortabel hotel (half board) during a ski holiday, near the lift and a very large ski area with the gletsjer only half an hour by bus (stop right in front of the hotel). We are a group and we enjoy very much the après ski in the nearby Laterndl Pub and also that is a plus so that you are not dependent on transportation back to the hotel, it's just a short walk downhill :)
Rooms are spacious and clean and the food is fantastic! Every morning a breakfastbuffet and diner is 4 courses + saladbarbuffet. They also serve a little snack in the afternoon but we are never there at that time so... Also a spa (sauna, steambath, solarium, massage) availabel but again, i don't use it because the time we arrive back from our day on the snow, it has already closed (to bad it is not opened in the evening).
Barprices are quite high if you want to drink something after or before diner.
There is room to store all you material but they do not turn the heaters (for the boots) on every evening.
I love the vibes of this hotel so i will return next year!

We spent 4 nights there in beginning of January. We mostly liked the comfort, the location, the access from carpark to skiroom and hotel, the bar, the large and quiet rooms and mainly the food - it was tasty, surpsiring and a lot of choices. The staff was very friendly, very helpful, you really feel welcome. We disliked sitting in the large eating room (they also have smaller ones) together with large groups so it became very noisy, the beds were not first class. The saunas are excellent but swimming pool or spa would be great. I can highly recommend the hotel to everybody but as there are many other hotels next time we try another one.
