“Family trip”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

We had a family stay for a birthday. We dined in the evening. Food was very poor, typical pub food but not cooked well, mostly overcooked and cold. Staff were okay but didn't do much to help. Views from the rooms are great but we won't be back.

We absolutely loved this place! If we would have known it was so great we would have stayed longer than one night. The food was fantastic! The rooms were comfy and quiet. We had a wonderful sea view and a great walking place right outside our door. I highly recommend a stay at the Ship Inn.

I stayed in the Ship Inn only for one night, but I was very pleased with the room and the service. The room was very clean with a very comfortable bed and a modern bathroom.
The restaurant and the bar is very cosy, great food, and even better whiskey!
Will definitely come back next year!

We stayed at the Ship Inn for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We visited Dunnotar castle and arrived early, so decided to get some lunch. They stop serving food at 2:15 pm. Staff very friendly, polite and smartly dressed. Walked around until we could check in and found room to be very well appointed. Bed comfy, bathroom spacious and room very clean.Due to excellent weather had to have windows open. After an excellent Anniversary dinner went to bed around 10;30pm. Couldn't get to sleep because of loud inconsiderate customers outside drinking under our window. This went on until 1 am. We know the staff cant stop people drinking outside and having a good time, but we felt that they should be made aware that they have guests and as it was so hot that windows would be open. This was the only down side to our stay.

Room Tip: Don't have a harbor view in the summer if you want peace and quiet, unless it is raining !

Arrived at about 630pm was busy outside but the bar was quiet .
I have dined here in the past and found it ok.
A foursome next to us had there starter served then before it was finished one of their mains arrived.
The waiter stood there as the lady finished her starter.
The other mains arrived 15 minutes later.

Our starter arrived and was wrong.
Description was with salad it some leaves and nothing else.
No lemon with the prawns poor fare.
Chicken with JD sauce from a bottle.

The main arrived 30 minutes later.
The 2 fishcakes were overdone, the chips were frozen version poor poor.
2 small fishcakes, chips from the freezer and a handful of cucumber and onion £10.45
This place has gone down hill.

Service around us was so disjointed staff were continually asking people did you order this.
A couple beside us were still waiting for a morsel when others that had arrived much later had finished.

Specials on the board had ran out and this was at 7pm but they were still on the board until someone pointed out maybe they should update the board .

Next time use the chip shop better quailty and cheaper too.

We dropped in for lunch and a pint or two after visiting Donnattar Castle. The Ship Inn is really a great place whether you sit outside and enjoy the view of Stonehavens small harbour or go inside and strike up a conversation with the locals in an atmosphere warm and friendly. The food is good wholesome uncomplicated pub food and very tasty to boot. Parking can be a bit of an issue especially during the weekends because there really isn't much of it. But if it means a slightly longer walk to take advantage of worth the Ship Inn has on offer its is well worth the effort. I am more than happy to recommend this quaint seaside pub.

We stayed at the Ship Inn for an overnight stay after visiting the Dunnotar Castle.

Pros:
Location - Walking (about half an hour) Distance to Dunnotar Castle,
View - Right in front of the old harbour. There is also a little trial along the coast in front of the hotel to walk to a beach. Very nice as well
Helpful Staff - Check in takes literally 2mins/the same applies to check out
Good Sottish Breakfast
Lots of free parking outside

Cons:
Old - as the name says, the interior is a bit old and run down, though we are already staying in the newer acquired part of the hotel.
Mattress - A little old... could be more comfortable
View also - why? we got a room facing the roof top of the next building. Not so pleasant and a little disappointed after walking in the front door expecting a good view.

Overall, the room is very well equipped and I think it is a sufficient for an overnight stay!
