“Cool place!”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

One of the most awesome castle ruins you can find. Quite a hike down (and back up) but well worth the effort... even in the rain!

“Stunning Destination”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

We love taking visitors on the coastal path with some take away fish and chips and a fried Mars Bar as a pic nic on the cliffs. The most impressive views and guaranteed to impress.

“Stroll from Stonehaven”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

We drove from Aberdeen by car to Stonehaven, parked, looked briefly at the fishing hamlet of Stonehaven and then followed a path up out of Stonehaven that quickly brought us to the precipice of the coastline with its rugged rocky crags and crashing waves inundated with the noisy calls of seabirds too many to count. As you follow the path with farmer's grain fields on one side and the seascape on the other don't be surprised to see dairy cows nearby grazing. The scene is full of photo greats and the best is yet to come when you see Dunnottar Castle in the distance. As we made our way toward Dunnotar we detoured up a hill to explore what looks like huge Greek pillars created by an artist at the turn of the 20th century to commemorate the fallen from WWI. To get to the top of the hill you have to pass through a cattle gate locally known as the kissing gate - a chance to steal a kiss from your lover once inside the portal. It took us about a one hour hike from Stonehaven to get to Dunnottar and once you arrive you won't be disappointed. The admission fee is about 8 GBP but well worth it. The castle has splendid stories to tell that are listed on reader boards at a variety of places. Yo u will see the area where kings and nobles feasted, prisoners were held, a story about Scotland's crown jewels and more. There are washrooms in the site and although small are kept very clean. You likely will catch a local piper just before you head down the steep stairway to the entrance of the castle that makes for a great photo op or video. There is a tour bus area close to Dunnottar making it quick to visit from Aberdeen but we were glad we did the path trek from Stonehaven. As others have said this is a must visit attraction - you won't be disappointed.

“Excellent”

Stunning historical location, well worth a visit.

Would benefit from a few more signs and boards to provide detail about some of the rooms and buildings.
