“A beautiful place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

Steep hills, lots of steps both p and down, so not suitable for everyone. Beautiful views from inside and outside the castle. You do need to buy the guide to get the most out of the history behind the ruin, but if you are in the area it is worth an hour or so. If the weather is nice, a picnic or disposable BBQ on the beach and a delve into the rock pools when the tide is out will add to the half day out.

“Very nteresting place and great views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

Whether or not you walk to the Castle from Stonehaven or drive to the car park this is a worthwhile visit for anyone and especially on a sunny day or at sunset. Some great views, interesting coastline and if you are a geologist there is something here for you as well.... Also good if you can see the castle from the seaward side as well........ completely different perspective....

“Quintessential ruined castle experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

I couldn't believe my wife wanted to go there but it was truly outstanding. Spectacular setting and views and all the wind and rain we needed to bring the fascinating history of the place to life. Don't miss this one!

“Awesome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

Beautiful!! What a view and what an awesome ruines. We visited 6 castles during our stay, but Dunnottar was one of our favorites. Even though it's a ruine, there is still lots to see and it leaves enough for your own imagination!

“What a view!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014

This is a great spot to visit. The view is amazing and they've maintained the history of the castle by not doing many renovations on it. There were a few sections blocked off for renos but it really was a nice few hours spent. It is a good hike up and down the hill to the castle, but it is worth the walk. There are plenty of castles to visit that are still lived in and well visited with furniture and artifacts. This place was nice because there wasn't much of a crowd like some of the higher profile stops which made for a more meaningful visit.
