My son found a picture of this castle on his laptop's Windows wallpaper options and has been in love with it for ages so we thought we'd visit. So surreal to see it in real life - and every bit as beautiful as the picture. It's a fair old walk down steps to the castle, not so bad going down but pretty tough going back up. Worth the effort though. The grounds are very well looked after and the castle parts are well labelled with great info boards along the way. The view is stunning (the weather was good for our visit). Young children are given crayons and a quiz to do as they go round. It was fascinating learning all about the Scottish crown jewels and how they were hidden. The cherry on the cake was the young lad playing the bagpipes at the entrance which really added to the ambience as the sound carried on the wind all around the castle. It was haunting! Bearing in mind we were staying in Loch Awe and Stonehaven was over 4hrs drive away I would definitely recommend a visit as we thought it was worth the trip.

We came to Dunnotar Castle when the mist rolled in. This made the Place much more interesting.
More than 500 years old building in a good Constitution

While there are many ruined castles to visit in Scotland, Dunnottar Castle is an excellent and expansive site to see. Get the guide book. It will tell you MUCH more than the signs. Very picturesque. Watch out for the 178 steps back UP the hill after you leave. Your legs will be tired!

Been wanting to go for ages after seeing the dramatic pictures on a well know Facebook page .
We were visiting a friend in Stonehaven & walked from the harbour along the cliffs & enjoyed the spectacular views before talking the winding path down to the entrance.
The castle grounds are well kept , clean & tidy as are all the various buildings .
There is a lot to see with all the different parts to the castle , we took hours to explore .
It's wasn't an issue for us but there is no cafe or gift shop so I would recommend taking something to drink with you , there are toilets though .
I would highly recommend
