Absolutely beautiful. Everyone is extremely friendly in Stonehaven and it's a lovely town. We walked through it from the train station and then followed signs to the path along the cliffs to the castle. I can't imagine not taking the path to get there; it's something that you really should do if you're able. When we went it happened to be overcast and rainy. Everyone said who lived around there said it's something you have to see in the sunlight too but I really thought it was perfect with the overcast rainy weather as well!

The castle itself is really good, however on the day we visited we experienced monsoon like weather, sadly we left coats in the car and got completely drenched!

Not the fault of anyone other than ourselves of course but it did "dampen" our experience somewhat!

We drove 2 hours to get to this castle and made a day of it by visiting other areas nearby. The area is absolutely beautiful. It's quite a scenic view, as long as the weather is decent you won't be disappointed. There is a quite a bit of the castle to see. To get to the actual castle there are a lot of steps, it's a good workout but if you have knee issues I'm not sure if you would enjoy it.

Excellent castle ruins. You can walk to the castle by a costal route via the war memorial on the hill or drive up / land train it to the car park near the castle.
Lots of steps

This castle is set in an amazing location. My favorite castles to visit are the ones that are in ruins and not refurbished. While the crowds were large, we were able to go thru at our own pace and enjoyed it completely. The setting above the sea and cliffs, offers a great opportunity for some beautiful vistas and photos. We went here on a whim and were not sorry. I would definitely recommend this location for a visit.

As a word of warning there is a pretty long and steep descent/ascent to get in and our of the castle.
