I have never been breathless at a castle - but this one took my breath away. The location on the coast, the rocky fortress is quite the site. The castle and grounds are in great condition - the staff we encountered were very nice. The views are unbelievable, and I will never forget my visit here. This is a MUST see for anyone traveling to Scotland.
Caution with all the stairs getting to the castle - take it slow, it is completely do-able.

Myself approaching 60 with arthritis and my friend in her 70's we parked up on a wet, sleety afternoon and walked down the hill, steps and up the other side......only to discover the castle closes at 4 and as it was JUST after 3.30pm we were denied entry by a rather rude young lady! such a shame as we had been thrown by the fact it was still so light mid February.......we clearly missed the opening times on the board at the car park - as did quite a few other people who came along after us! We would have been very happy to just have wandered round quickly - but were fairly brusquely asked to leave the doorway/entrance area by said young lady!
Apart from that the Castle was fantastic - the views leading toward it - the sun, sea - the bay - all amazing - I will need to come back another day!
Please make it clearer on the walk down to the castle that you WILL NOT be admitted 30 minutes before closing time....

Thanks for taking the time to review the Castle and leave us feedback. I'm sorry you felt you were brusquely treated, that is certainly not the way we like to treat our guests. The times on our website and on the signs at the car park are the last entry times, after which one has only 30 minutes in the Castle; not really enough time to explore it fully.
There has to be a cut off time for letting people into the Castle and we have to stick by this to allow us to clean the toilets, check and lock areas and prepare for the next day's visitors. Had the other people who were behind you seen you being admitted after the last entry time, there could have been some rather unpleasantness on finding that they were being treated differently.
I'm glad you still had a fantastic time and hope you will come back and spend some time enjoying the inside of the Castle too.

Kind regards
Jim Wands

Dunnottar Castle couldn't have been set with a better background! It was almost magical watching birds soar over the ruins and listening to the water crashing onto the cliff walls on which the castle is set. There is quite a lot of stairs to go down and go up to get to the actual castle but if you're able, it's well worth the trek! There wasn't a lot to see in the castle itself as it is just ruins but the view up there was amazing!

Came here on a lovely sunny afternoon and the castle looked beautiful. There’s a short walk from the car park and a few steps to get to the castle but don’t let that put you off. The castle has some stunning views, lots of information which teaches you about its history. The amazing aspect of this castle is the condition of some of the areas, rooms and features. They’re in fantastic condition which is impressive considering it must get a battering from the weather. Loved this castle and really glad we made the trip over to it.
