“Down the river”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

I was there 5 years ago and I still have in my mind the picture of one of the most incredible place I have ever seen. Floating forest, marvelous landscape, nice people and water everywhere. The lodge is essential but nice and comfortable. The long trip to arrive there is amazing and allow you to arrive in a very peaceful and relaxing place. A dive from the tree into the black river is worth a lot! The monkey mascot is adorable!

When you book a vacation on the internet, you never know whether the reality will live up to the reviews. This place was so much better than the reviews. When we arrived at the location, it was so beautiful that I almost had to pinch myself. Right on the river, the verandas have stunning views. The water is warm and delightful to swim in. There is a friendly monkey who enjoys playing with the lodge guests.

The rooms themselves are pretty basic; not exactly rustic (you still have a toilet and shower that work well) but certainly not luxury. There is no air-conditioning and no wifi. But that is to be expected in the middle of the Amazon jungle.

The staff are fantastic. Led by the "head guide" Robinson, who is full of fun and information, every staff person was friendly and helpful. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff, who took us on jungle adventures that were informative and enjoyable. Whether it was treking through the jungle or just playing football int he jungle rain, the staff worked hard to make every simple guest feel really welcome and part of the fun.

Every meal was included it he price and they were fantastic. We literally had some of the best meal of all our time in Brazil at Tupana Lodge. Food was served buffet style and was usually plentiful and tasty. The best thing was there there was a wide selection including typical Brazilian food that we might not have known to try at a regular restaurant in a city.

And the BEST thing about Tupana, and the thing that I didn't see in any reviews or notices about Tupana (why did everyone keep this a secret???) is that because the Tupana is located on the Rio Negra (which is very acidic) there are virtually no mosquitos! Seriously, in all the time we were there, I never saw, heard, or felt a single mosquito. I expected to be bitten to shreds while in the Amazon and actually did not get bitten once.

All in all, I could not recommend the Tupana Lodge highly enough. It was a wonderful experience and I could not have been happier.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are good. We chose bungalow, which were a little more expensive. They are nice beca...

If you're looking for a high-end, luxury Amazon lodge experience, this is not the place for you. If you want to be transported to a simpler time and place, this might be your cup of tea. Without wi-fi or cell phone reception, limited electricity and no hot water, it really is the ideal place to unwind and unplug. Deep in the Amazon, the boat ride to the lodge is unforgettable. The location is ideal, quiet and remote. The food was delicious, but you need to be there on time for meals. It's all buffet style and when it runs out, there is no more. Our team was fantastic. The guides - Kaic and Robinson - were incredibly knowledgeable and made every activity into an adventure. Whatever you do, don't miss the night-time boat ride. You may never see so many stars in your life.

Room Tip: There is a bank of 8 rooms in the main area and 4 cabins a bit further away. I'd recommend the...

The Tupana Lodge is located deep in the amazon region in a wonderful location among the jungle and the black river. The staff is really friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, we really enjoy our time with Sonia, Aprigio and our guide Kaic. Specially Aprigio efforts in sharing all the information about the jungle and the river. We also bonded with the monkeys that used to chase us around for a hug or a free ride on top of our head. The macaw was beautiful to look at but very moody, we had to run away from her a couple of times. Rex was our oficial jungle guide and the cat was a nice one to play with. The excursion on the boat around the rivers and water channels were all amazing, no matter the time of the day: sunrise, sunset and the nigth full of starts made the journey unforgetable. We most of all enjoy the fact there was no wifi or mobile signal, we really disconectted and enjoy nature toghether. The nigth we slept in the jungle was an experience we wont forget, cooking our food and making the fire was really fun. Overall we loved the trip and all the memories from it!

This is remote, really remote - which is just what we wanted. Limited periods of electricity, no wifi or signal - a great escape. The property is beautifully in keeping with its environment and many of the staff lived locally along the river bank.
The food was good and plentiful. The room was as you would expect. Well attended and clean - but after a massive downpour one night we had a tiny frog visit our shower room - we were happy to share!
The best aspect of the trip was our wonderful guide Shawn and Jamus the boatman.
Charming, knowledgable and nothing was to much trouble. They both had the intuitive balance of information, humour, detail and quietness. Both had a real harmony with us and the environment.
All the lodge staff were cheery and helpful although the resident macaw,Nina was amusingly moody! The dog Rex and the exceptionally lazy cat were delightfful but the semi-resident spider monkeys stole the show.
The activities were well organised with the highlight being the night cayman stalking. The sense of remoteness, the wonderful night sky and closeness to nature was marvellous and a memory we will never forget. We loved swimming I the river and the other guests were very friendly and like minded.
It is a trek to get here - but we wouldn't have missed it for the world and the journey across the Amazon at Manous and the journey to the lodge the other side is an experience in itself.m

Room Tip: We had a river facing view which I would recommend. From the varangian you can see all the comings a...

We truly enjoyed our stay at Amazon Tupana. We couldn't have imagined a better way to spend quality time with the children, aged 4 and 6, as a family.

The staff was wonderful. We really enjoyed Aprigio and his knowledge of the forest and the river. We felt very safe with him.

We also enjoyed the food. The layout of the lodge is great. All the staff continuously wanted us to be comfortable, they were very pleasant and accommodating, and at the same time, they didn't invade our privacy.

It's an experience we will never forget. The children continuously talk about Rex the dog, Garfield the cat and Nina the perrot! We loved swimming in the river, spending time in the playroom, relaxing in the hamacs, forest walks, boat rides, seeing all the wildlife including monkeys and dolphins, visiting the school, the food, and most of all, all of the information Aprigio had to share with us.

We would definitively recommend this to people looking for an adventure in the middle of the jungle, who are looking to get away from the crowds.

Room Tip: We preferred the rooms with river view.

Our family with boys 10 and 7 years, spent a Christmas time in Tupana. Boys will never forged it. Swimming and playing with monkey Chiko, were top points. Daily trips to surrounding gave a lot as well. Good point was also that there was no need for malaria medication because Tupana is in black water area where mosquitos are not able to breed.

Room Tip: We had separate bungalow. It was super!
