“Complete dining experience makes for a happy customer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

Having never really felt the urge to write a review for the good people at trip advisor 'the Soul' has shaken me into action. The food has been consistently excellent on a number of occasions, be it luncheon or evening dining. What makes the difference to me is the ability to enjoy oneself in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere which provides the complete dining experience often lacking from similarly positioned establishments (i will name no names ....oyster smack).

In summary i would and do recommend 'the Soul' to any visiting friends and also insist that Elvis's cocktail menu is given the due care and attention it deserves!

“A Lovely treat!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

This is a beautiful up-market restaurant. Ideal for special occasions. We hadn't had time to eat out for quite a while so splashed out and included champagne to our menu;the bill therefore quite hefty but well worth it! The food was fantastic - could not be faulted - amazing flavours. However,as it has a reputation as a seafood restaurant was a little dissapointed that only two fish options were on the menu and no shellfish. We had the fish and it was spectacular.Halibut and salmon. We will be taking friends and family there again soon. Decor is lovely.
Beware those cocktails............deadly!!!

“Poor dessert...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2014

Visited the Soul for Sunday lunch with my wife and 2 children. Roast beef was good. However, my wife and daughter order the tiramisu for dessert. Although well presented it had no flavour whatsoever. They didn't eat it. The waitress asked us if we enjoyed lunch. We pointed out that we didn't like the tiramisu and she cleared the table. Unfortunately, no offer of an alternative dessert or offer to remove from the bill. £113 for Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 children. Hmmm......not sure we will be back....

“Money well spent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2014

We decided last minute to try The Contented Soul in Burnham-on-Crouch last night, and we wasnt disappointed. It is now called The Soul and undergone a transformation since our last visit approx 2 years ago.
We were warmly greeted into the beautifully renovated restaurant by one of the owners Charlotte and also the bar man who is called Elvis - yes that is his real name. It has undergone a major transformation and very much for the better. It was looking a little tired during our last visit 2 years ago, but since the new owners moved in about a year ago it is now a relaxed fine dining experience that we will certainly be back to enjoy.
We started with a drink in the bar/lounge area and I opted for a Chech beer for no other reason other than I hadn't had one before, and it tasted very good, my wife went for the Bombai Sapphire and tonic. We chatted for about 15 minutes with Charlotte the owner who made us feel very welcome and as though we had been friends for many years.
We were soon asked if we wanted to go to our table and we were then lead to our table through the light and very tastefully decorated restaurant with splashes of colour from the flower and plant displays. The background music seemed a perfect choice for the overall ambience of the place.
We decided on our meals and hoped they would be as good as our first impressions of the restaurant. Whilst we waited another of the restaurant partners arrived and he was introduced to us by Charlotte, it transpired that he was Charlotte's dad and just as friendly.
We sat there and started to notice the many unusual lamps and mirrors placed around the restaurant and Charlotte informed us that it is a local man from Purleigh who likes to make "stuff" from antiques etc, well the stuff is unique and also up for sale, they have very discrete price labels if you look closely. We had a lampshade next to us which was made of a vintage camera, we joked that it was probably the CCTV.
The starters arrived and we were not disappointed at all, very nicely presented and tasted beautiful. The same with the main coarse and also the desert, everything looked and tasted great and matched everything that the restaurant promised from our first impressions on arrival.
Apparently it is a new chef, my advise is don't let him go anywhere, keep hold of him and you will have many happy customers.
Overall a great night, a tad costly for a mid week, but worth every penny.
