“Great place to stay, well set out, gorgeous views!”
Reviewed 30 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

This is a fantastic place to visit and a great cottage to stay in.
It has all the amenities for a family and their dog.
There is great outdoor seating areas, so when the sun does finally come out you can choose from lots of lovely spots to sit out in it.
Nice warm place on a cold wet day.
There are loads of great walks all on your doorstep.
Only thing I didn't like was the poor chickens in the barn not getting to the outdoors at all, especially as there was somewhere that could have been fenced off for them - that was quite disheartening.
Otherwise, helpful owners and a lovely cottage.

“Awesome place”
Reviewed 17 April 2017 for a stay in April 2017

This was a boys holiday of walking and real ale. We were excited to be away together, but initially gave little thought to the accommodation we had booked.

Wow. What a pleasant surprise.

Spacious, fully equipped and beautiful views in the perfect setting.

We will be revisiting!

Highly recommend this place.

“Suits all - brilliant for walkers, no less appealing to the more leisurely inclined!”
Reviewed 8 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

Absolute heaven for walkers I should imagine ( details of numerous walks direct from the farm are provided) and no less appealing to those looking for a more leisurely break. Who could fail to unwind amid scenery like this - even if it is only fleetingly glimpsed through the gloom of January ? We didn't expect brilliant weather at this time of year, and so plumped for Abbots Abode , the most spacious of three properties on offer at Monk's Retreat , to ensure each of us (we were joined for a few days by our adult son) the luxury of spreading out and relaxing without getting under one another's feet if confined indoors. We were not disappointed with our choice . Impeccably clean with no evidence of this being a pet-friendly property despite a warm welcome for furry friends , comprehensively equipped , warm and comfortable. Excellent value for money too, heating etc being included . Owners are friendly and obliging - on hand but not intrusive. Bonus points for generous supply of towels and loo rolls - not a big deal perhaps but often strictly rationed in holiday properties. Good laundry washing and drying facilities (powder provided) at a reasonable charge. Nice touches include a welcome tea tray with shortbread sheep (delicious) and the chance to buy fresh eggs daily. The weather prevented use of the gardens, which must be lovely in spring and summer. There are plenty of places to sit and drink in the surroundings. Kids will love this place, and I'm sure that disabled/older holidaymakers will too, as long as care is exercised , as there are steps and slopes to be negotiated. There are a couple of points worth mentioning I think which by no means detract from the appeal of this rental but which may be relevant to some holidaymakers . There is only one bathroom which might not be ideal if maximum occupancy was by a party of six adults, and the approach is via a very steep and narrow lane, with a sharp turn into the farm - might be a bit tricky in ice or snowy conditions for the slightly nervous driver !
