“A gem in the Borders”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

This small hotel is a real find. It is classed as a boutique B&B but has all the facilities and atmosphere of a small country house hotel. The rooms are comfortable and spacious as well as being very stylishly decorated. There are pleasant public rooms, including the small bar with a log fire and a sunroom with beautiful views. The food is delicious, all freshly prepared and very nicely presented. Breakfast was one of the best we have had anywhere. The owners are very welcoming and have clearly worked hard to create a really delightful place to stay. It is located in Walkerburn which is close to Peebles and is a good central base for exploring more of the Borders.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have lovely views across the valley but all are quiet and peaceful.

My partner and I stayed at Windlestraw for his 50th birthday and it was excellent. High quality but comfortable and relaxing. Lovely room (MacIntosh), particularly liked the huge bath with champagne glasses in the rack, which we had to use, of course. Loved the staircase carvings of owl, dragon, gargoyle. Dinner on both evenings was of very high quality. All the nice touches of predinner drinks, canapes and after dinner drinks in front of log fire. Meeting Alan and Julie's two dogs make it feel especially homely. We would happily return.

We spent 5 nights at Windlestraw Lodge from 21 Oct 2013 to 26 Oct 13 which was our honeymoon. It is difficult to put into words just what a fantastic house this is, the room was excellent with lovely views and beutifully furnished. Now the food was out of this world, lucky we slimmed before we went! Both Dinner and Breakfast were cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Hosts Julie and Alan gave us a friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We thoroughly recommend this venue to anyone who enjoys quality food and accommodation.

My wife and I have just returned from 2 nights at this delightfully special hotel. Every aspect of our stay was outstanding. It is really like living as guests in a very beautiful private home and you are welcomed into that home by generous and gracious hosts, Julie and Alan Reid. We had THE most beautiful suite (The McIntosh Room) and ate THE most wonderful food all prepared by Alan. Our stay was a sheer delight and we cannot recommend Windlestraw Lodge highly enough. And added to this is the glorious view of the river Tweed and the surrounding border countryside.

Room Tip: The front facing bedrooms have a view of the countryside including the river Tweed.

What a beautiful place; sunshine on a rainy day. Stay here and enjoy peace, luxury and indulgence within minutes of arriving. An historic haven that thrusts it's doors wide to welcome you, so you can, for a short time, forget the humdrum of everyday life and basque in the peace and tranquility that Windlestraw Lodge and it's owners offers, with ease and grace. Knowing your craft is one thing, executing it to these standards takes love, pride and care. Come and stay here and find out for yourself; the only guarantee is that you will return again and again.

Just returned from a fantastic 3 day break at the Windlestraw Lodge , Walkerburn we arrived on Monday afternoon with friends of ours to celebrate there 30th wedding anniversary , on entering the lodge we where meet by Julie who checked us in and showed us to our rooms we had the Ballantyne room and our friends had the McIntosh Suite both rooms were very clean and tidy and tastefully decorated , I had ordered champagne, fresh flowers and chocolates to be put in both rooms on arrival which had been done as asked .
There was plenty of choice for evening meals , which started with canapés in the sun room while deciding on our main meals , the dinning room and tables are all set out beautifully and the main meals were excellent along with the deserts, the breakfast were also excellent with plenty of choice .
The Lodge is set in beautiful scenery and the weather while we were there was quite nice which made it even better , the building its self is kept to a high standard and the gardens kept tidy, all in all the Windlestraw Lodge is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: If all the rooms are as good as the Ballantyne room you will be spoilt for choice .

I have a confession to make; I have never stayed at Windlestraw Lodge, however I bought a 3 night package as a gift for my elderly parents' birthdays and they visited in September 2013.

Over a week later and they are still calling me up to thank me for such a wonderful stay, they particularly loved the surroundings, the food and the exemplary service; for example, they came back from a walk one chilly afternoon and sat in the lounge. Immediately a "lovely young lad" (!) came and lit the fire for them.

They stayed in the big room (Mackintosh?) and said it was huge and very comfortable.

Thank you so much for making my parents very happy; I hope to get up to Scotland with my husband sometime soon to enjoy Windlestraw Lodge first hand.
