What an amazing time spent with friends and family, had friendly service our fish was smoked by the owners the rooms were nice and clean, such a relaxing atmosphere.

Really don't know what the previous review was about, how can some tell you whether a medium pizza is going to be enough for you, like the owner said, it depends how hungry you are.

Moving forward to more pleasant reviews, had a great time : )

Stay away! The "Gourmet" food was a choice of steak, pork chop or pizza and you had to decide when phoning in your reservation. Reservation? What a joke. Middle of summer and we were the only ones there for dinner. Marissa Olsen was the "hostess" and was very unpleasant. When she asked what size pizza I asked if a small was enough for one person to which she replied "depends on how hungry you are." So my daughter and I each ordered a medium and after eating what we wanted and sharing with our husbands there was still a whole pizza left. The staff surely knows that a medium pizza is plenty for two people. Our husbands had steak which was accompanied by "gourmet" frozen chips (French fries). We were told they weren't licensed to open our bottle of wine but told us they had wine. We had a choice of "red or white" but not told exactly what kind. Marisa was clearly more interested in watching tv than serving the only people there. We have a summer home on the island and have had nice meals in several other establishments but will never eat here again. We tried it as everything else was closed and my daughter and husband wanted to take us out before they left. Should have made a nice meal at home!

We came to the stray possum lodge with 3 other families. This holiday was brilliant. I cant wait to get back there. My son caught his first snapper, my husband i did some fabulous diving, and we were completely and utterly spoilt by Kev (owner). We stayed for 6 days and that went by way too fast. The beaches were safe and the kids had a great time.
We used both the communal facilities and had meals at the lodge. I was good to have both options. The scenery around the lodge was breathtaking. The kids loved the dogs, cats, pigs and various birds that frequented the area. thank you Kev and Marissa. C u next time. Will and Mandy and kids

I went for a weekend trip with some mates from my rugby team to great barrier and stayed at The Stray Possum. The lodge good beds, great communal cooking facilities and plenty of room for a bbq and a few beers.
As Barrier is pretty isolated, Kevin (owner/operator) was able to provide us with transport around the island. Kevin also took us fishing.
Really great people and I highly recommend staying at The Stray Possum Lodge.

spent 4 days with Kevin and Marissa with group of 17, young and old. Excellent hosts, beautiful setting and plenty to do. Paint-ball in the bush was a riot, and Kevin knew the best fishing spots. Orcas and dolphins swimming nearby at times and schools of fish everywhere. Some of the boys went diving on the eastern coast while others relaxed when it was looking too rough to be boating. Neat sports bar with big screen to watch All Blacks and Kiwi League teams.
Bedding was comfortable, lounge and kitchen functional - could have done with a freezer in the fridge.
