“Beware of the dog”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

Several reviewers have mentioned Samson the dog, and we met him too. Unfortunately there was another dog staying when we did and we watched the two of them bail up the other guests barking and growling. Then it happened to us too, with the visiting dog growling and Samson snapping at me.I am used to dogs and this was the worst experience I have ever had with them, quite frightening as they are both big dogs. Samson on his own seemed fine, but this other dog was nasty and they got each other worked up and aggressive. It was a shame as it's a lovely spot, beautiful view, comfortable and well appointed room. The hot water bottles were a nice touch and much appreciated as it was colder than we'd expected.

Thank you for your great ratings. I am truly sorry about the incident with Samson. I can understand you were concerned, not knowing the dogs well. Mela, the other dog, was only staying with me for 3 nights, while her owner was away and she is definitely a very yappy dog. This unfortunately wound Samson up and, as I tell all my guests when they arrive, when he gets playful he may tug on your clothes. As he did with you. Unfortunately his tugging got too close for comfort. For that I apologise.
Mela's has gone home and in future I won't have her to stay when I have guests.

I am glad that you otherwise enjoyed the stay and love the photos you added.

It began with the Dolphins escorting us across from the Mainland by Ferry and I knew I was headed somewhere special and I was definitely not disappointed. 5 days and nights staying at Manuka Lodge with host Toni and dog Samson.
Fantastic self contained room with Awesome view over Shoal Bay where sleep is a natural thing.
Toni catered for all our needs including guided tour of many Island landmarks.
Getting out on my Kayak and mounting cliffs on my surf board at Medlands Beach break was my trips highlights but also relaxing in the Kaitoki hot Pools after a pleasant walk through swamp and bush equally up there.
Relying on solar power and rain water makes you appreciate how much we waste and take for granted back home!
If you wanna get away, relax and enjoy what a beautiful place we are fortunate to live in, then look No further than Here.

Thanks for your review. Yes, the location is also good for people who don't have transport. Plenty of walks nearby, although to really explore you do need a car. Hope to see you both again soon.

3 of us spent a great 5 nights at Manuka Lodge using both units.Toni and Sampson were very friendly and welcoming. The units were clean and had everything that we required. With her knowledge of the area Toni was able to direct us to the beaches for surfing and kayaking and on the walking tracks. We enjoyed magnificent views from our room and the deck, amazing sunsets. Just a short walk to the local laundromat and shop. we were lucky to be invited by Toni to a highly enjoyable evening at the Social club watching a premiere showing of a NZ made film and meeting the producer, actors (one of whom is a local) and the locals. The weeks stay was like time in another world making us more aware of the environment, the excessive use of water and electricity and disposable items. Awesome listening to the sea at night and looking at the stars. Only problem was the stay was too short.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view.

We spent a lovely 4 nights at Manuka Lodge earlier this month with friends also staying in the room next door. Toni was a fantastic host - welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and had everything we needed. Great peaceful location but walking distance to shop and café. Staying at Manuka Lodge contributed to a fantastic experience on Great Barrier Island!

Have just spent 2 lovely nights at Manuka Lodge. The place is beautifully clean and well presented.
Toni and her dog "Sampson" are lovely hosts... Toni has a great knowledge of the island and the people that live on it!!!! If it is raging night life you are after I don't think you will find it here... however if you seriously need a lax out and kick back Great Barrier Island is only a 30 min puddle jump from Auckland by air. Manuka Lodge is will worth checking out

We spent 2 nights and found the unit to be comfortable and clean with a great view of the harbour. The host, Toni is very informative and helpful and makes you feel you can ask if you need further information. It is peaceful and you have all sorts of bird calls not heard on the mainland. Even saw Kaka feeding on the flax, but just too quick to get a decent photo. A great spot for a break

Room Tip: Any one would be fine. get a view from all

I stayed at Manuka Lodge for two nights on a business trip and would highly recommend it to other travellers. The location is great, with a fantastic view of the bay from the window. The room was spacious, attractively decorated and furnished and comfortable. There were thoughtful touches such as a selection of magazines and books, which were much appreciated. The hostess, Toni, was very friendly and welcoming and gave advice about local amenities.
