“What a wonderful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2012

This was the best holiday that I have had for years mainly due to the warmth and hospitality of Hilary and Peter who run the estate. The breakfasts were great and they made us anything that we wanted ( really flexible) they offered to do picnic takeaways for us when we had planned long days out looking at this beautiful island. I have also never slept so well in years. It was such a relaxing and happy time for us. I would highly recommend anyone to enjoy this experience for theirselves.

Once again a massive thank you to Hilary and Peter for being such wonderful hosts. Second visit for me and the Mount St. Paul estate and the house and the hosts never fail to impress. How can a morning get any better than opening your patio doors (after a great nights sleep on the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on) onto your own terrace with panoramic views of the ocean and the smell of a traditional cooked breakfast coming up the stairs, heaven! The whole island is a total paradise island and is a must visit. Once again I must say this is the place to stay. I'm counting the days till I'm back again

After a slight detour having been too engrossed in the beautiful scenery to miss the rather prominent sign of Mount St Paul Estate we arrived to a warm welcome by Hilary, Peter and Ben, the very friendly dog. The room was exceptionally spacious and the views to die for! Relaxing in the bath listening to the tranquility or waking up and admiring the magnificent panoramic views from our balcony, it was perfect. Hilary and Peter are the perfect hosts, imparting their knowledge of some of the wo aquanderful walks to the windy canyon and hot springs. Cooking a perfect breakfast, especially the sausages none if this chorizo lark you get in many of the Auckland cafe's. And even taking the time to drop us to Earthsong so we could enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.

The only thing that's made this holiday more perfect is my wonderful husband 'to be' proposing....and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful setting than the experience we have had on Great Barrier Island.

Thank you Hilary and Peter for a wonderful stay, we will no doubt be back!

Room Tip: Sea view with a balcony

Our visit to Great Barrier and our stay at Mt Paul Estate was nothing short of sublime!
The island is so gorgeous, NZ as it used to be, untouched beauty and friendly locals, there's a lot to see and do. We had great fun exploring the island and its beaches, bush tracks, hot pools and more. Everything was made easier by our helpful hosts Hilary and Peter, who organised everything from flights, carhire, yummy breakfasts and heaps of helpful info on where to go and what to see.
And the room... the view, the insanely huge bed, our own balconies and ensuite, everything was perfection.
We are already scheming ways to get back there again!
Thanks Hilary and Peter (and Ben) it was awesome, and we hope to be back!

In a great central location close to Claris airport. Up a long winding drive halfway up the mountain is this huge lodge / B&B - well huge for Great Barrier anyway. It is that large a structure that it is clearly identifable from the top of Mt Hobson (the highest point on the Island). Huge is going to become a theme for this review. Surprisingly it only contains 3 guest rooms, two with sea views and balconies and one at the rear of the house with windows on three sides but no sea view or balcony. The rooms are all huge, clean, nicely furnished (some with own fireplaces), with huge comfy beds. Breakfasts too could be huge, but that's your choice as Hilary gives you a menu to select from on your arrival. Hilary and Peter were friendly, hospitable and helpful, booking flights for us etc. Barrier was spectacular and this accommodation was perfectly located in the centre of the island which made exploring easy. We would stay here again. Perhaps Hilary and Peter should consider charging slightly less for the room at the rear of the house given no balcony, sea views and very steep stairs to the small'ish ensuite? Visitors to Barrier be warned it is significantly more expensive than the Mainland (all mains at the Thai Restaurant were $32 each) but this is undoubtedly a function of it being an island with attendant freight costs but it is also fabuously clean with the most amazing plant life and empty beaches. Unspoilt New Zealand. Worth at least a 5 day stay not a weekend.

Room Tip: We had the room without a sea view, balcony or fireplace, but it got great sun and inland views, not...

& nothing less than perfect , Greated by Peter & Hilary & the dog ben, had a relaxing but great time on the tracks as well . Hilary cooked a huge meal at dinner time & the breakfasts left us not needing any lunch .Rooms clean & tidy with panoramic views to die for , A great weekend
& we will be back to finish the many walks around great barrier soon, Great how nothing is locked up & every local driver waves at you , everyone so friendly- nz 50 years ago

A very fine B & B retreat with the friendliest host on the planet! Mount St Paul is the perfect getaway for both a short weekend holiday or a long stay in pristine surroundings; ocean view as soon as you open your eyes in the morning and all the way through a made-to-choice breakfast. Hilary and Peter had everything ready for us as soon as we arrived by ferry with our rental car waiting and our "must-do" itinerary on the table. We were so well looked after that we felt part of the family (including Ben, the dog and Bear, the bear). The accommodation is grand; clean, spacious and VERY comfortable. The beaches are breathtaking and you have them all to yourself. Fantastic place if you love hiking; anything from easy strolls to ambitious treks. Don't miss Windy Canyon! The island is excellent outside the peak season; it's you and nature during your days and then you mix with the locals in the evening at the Irish pub. Folks are relaxed and outspokenly friendly. If you need anything, just ask. A great place to be, indeed.

Room Tip: Ask for the ocean view rooms.
