We visited in July 2011 on a weekend when they had a Victorian themed event - staff were dressed in Victorian outfits and special events were arranged. This added to our visit but the gardens were quite busy as a result. The gardens are well laid out and very pleasant to walk around; they are nicely divided into themed areas, including some inspired by countries (Egypt, China). There is plenty of variety of plants and an interesting geological gallery that tells the story of creation. These gardens are a good place to go for a half-day excursion (2-3 hours is sufficient to leisurely wander through the gardens).
We ate in the tea rooms - the food was fresh and reasonably priced.
There is a charge for entry but as a National Trust property it is free for NT members.

One of the National Trust properties, only disappointment is that the house is not accessible for public. But if you acknowledge the fact that you're only coming here for the garden, that can be the best day trip ever. The garden is absolutely meticulous, housing plants from all over the world in a theme-areas (you can find Egyptian/Chinease corners etc). Completed with ponds and resting places, that makes up for a perfect strolling opportunity.

What a lovely place to visit,
Was lucky enough to go on a nice day that brought out the best in the many colours.
This is a garden attraction not the house which is manly private.
One down fall as with all My propertys the food prices are way to high, yes they will say its local produce but is still overpriced.
Don't let the last bit put you off as the gardens are great.

This is quite a small attraction (eventhough the free map, not drawn to scale, would have you believe that it's enormous) that does not have a huge range of flowers and plants in the gardens, but it's pretty enough to wander around. Lots of empty beds but around the small lake was very pretty. We had lunch in the tea shop - food was average, they were quite busy to be fair but after a 30 minute wait they did serve under-cooked crumble :o(
If you're in the area, and have a NT card that gets you in for free, then it's definitely worth having an hour or so to look round.
