“frozen to death, no heating at night”
Reviewed 29 September 2012

Bedroom very cold and cramped.Stayed here in January 2012 and froze to death. All heating turned off in room at 9pm and when we complained was turned back on again for only 1 hour. Temperature outside was zero, windows did not shut so room temperature was the same inside as outside. Corridors also freezing, only heated room was the bar.......

Room Tip: Choose a room with heating, apparently there are some with heating at night and some without.

Fantastic location, beautiful old looking pub opposite a large pond.
A very warm professional welcome when we booked in and breakfast was very well cooked.
Things that let it down were shabby, dirty paintwork, tatty bathroom floor and shower enclosure, chipped bowls at breakfast. The TV should not have been switched on at breakfast time with the sound turned up high. Because of the way the seating was some of our group had their backs to the TV, we wanted to chat to each other and the TV was very distracting. Also I think they've tried to make the old building into a modern hotel feel that doesn't really suit. It would look much better as a traditional historic building inside with exposed beams in the accommodation rooms as the pub room is downstairs.
The place needs a bit of TLC which won't be too difficult to achieve. Maybe just an extra member of staff to clean for starters and a lick of paint all over. I think they are in the process of a few changes.
The experience we had at the Old Mill would not deter us from staying again.

The food and hospitality was very good, only the bedroom was a disgrace. It was advertised with wifi in every room, which was wrong and even though I told staff about the growth in the bay window, nobody went to check it out or even clean it. All rooms were taken and I had had a few drinks so could not move to another hotel. On checking out I was asked if everything was OK, so I told the young girl of the problems and added that I had cleaned all the cobwebs from above the bed but had left a few in the bathroom for them to clean up.
On the door of the room was a message informing guests of the refurbishments but this should not stop them from cleaning rooms. I WILL NOT BE STAYING THERE AGAIN.
All photo's were taken about one hour after complaining to staff.

Have just had a lovely meal with 14 friends at the Old Mill, the food was lovely large portions and a very reasonal price and the staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very enjoyable with plenty of choice.
My husband and I also stayed the night, the hotel is in the middle of being revamped and I am sure it will look lovely when finished. The only downside was that some sort of equipment in the kitchen had been left on over night and that kept me awake.

Room Tip: do not have room 12

We were staying in Alsegar overnight and went to the Old Mill for dinner. My husband said the steak and ale pudding was outstanding. The portions were big. We had two mains, one sweet, one side portion, two pints and a lemonade and it only cost £23. In comparison to where we live in Scotland this is very good value for money.
The lady behind the bar was lovely. We wished we had booked a room in the pub, unfortunately we had booked a room in the Holly Trees, Crewe Rd.
Next time we would definitely book here, the atmosphere was welcoming, the meal was fab and I'm sure the rooms would be fine and the breakfast plentiful. Lovely grounds too.

Our description of The Old Mill is that of a quaint olde worlde inn with gorgeous food & friendly helpful staff.
We Stayed 1 night to celebrate a wedding. We arrived at the hotel mid afternoon & after a little confusion by the staff as to what room we were to occupy we were soon sorted & settled. Our room was comfortable; tastefully decorated & had everything we needed. We dropped our bags & went down to the bar to socialise with friends & order some food. We had the most delicious steak & stilton sandwich – my husband said it was the best he’d ever tasted!
The wedding reception went smoothly & the food was tasty & plentiful.
We had a full English breakfast the next morning which was delicious, there was also a variety of fruit, cereals & fruit juice.
We would certainly stay here again & recommend to others.

The Old Mill is just as it looks in its' promotional photos, with even more "atmosphere" in reality. We had a small, but clean and comfortable room, with en suite facility. The staff are really friendly, nothing too much trouble. The general ambience is warm and inviting. Idyllic pond, with ducks / geese / and huge carp....trees, flowers & birdsong in abundance! Food was really good, and certainly plentiful. Lovely restaurant. Entertainment was a tad "outdated" but hey...it was FREE. My only problem....Breakfast is served in the bar. Not a problem in itself, but amidst the sunshine through the little windows, and the morning birdsong, A LARGE SCREEN TV, IS "ON" AND COVERING SPORT.......WITH THE VOLUME ON...?? Not appropriate at that time of day, and not conducive to a relaxing breakfast...? Easily remedied though! Switch it off until Breakfast is over, or, serve breakfast in the restaurant? Would love to go back, just unsure about morn TV.???

Room Tip: Prettiest view would be "front facing".
