Recently my partner and I flew to the Great Barrier Island and stayed at Earthsong Lodge for three glorious days. We were greeted by owner Trevor Rendle who went out of his way to describe the Island and its flora and fauna as he drove us from the Airport at Medlin, to Tryphena, the other side of the island. A cute 'ducks crossing' sign caught our eye and Trevor advised us that the Pateke duck was a protected species on the Island. Upon arrival at the Lodge up the long driveway accessible by 4 wheel drive we were greeted by Trevor's wife Carol a truly nice lady. Her welcoming smile was genuine and set the tone for the entire stay. Then .... the view, over the whole of Tryphena ,,,stunning. We saw Auckland{ the Tower} the next day as the weather was clear and sunny. The entire lodge is constructed using straw bales and rendered in beautiful warm Tuscan colours. Carol showed us to our room and we remarked how thick the walls were and how the garden patio on one side and the balcony with the terrific views on the other, gave a feeling of complete privacy. We met for drinks/canapes prior to dinner and were introduced to another couple who were fabulous and then sat down to enjoy a special meal. Trevor is a fine chef and proved it over two evenings. He explains each course of 5 with aplomb and a sincerity that is heartwarming. A personal favourite is Trevors' rack of lamb. His blue cheese and prunes story is a MUST.We walked, talked, relaxed, recharged body and mind but alas three days seemed to fly by. Thankyou Carol Trevor and Earthsong Lodge. A return visit ? Absolutely. La Spada

My boyfriend surprised me with a trip to Great Barrier Island. After an exciting, once in a lifetime plane trip, we were met at the airport by Trevor Rendle, the chef and owner of Earthsong Lodge. On the way to the lodge, he gave commentary about the island's history, flora and fauna while stopping to let us take photos. Once at the lodge, we were met by the adorable Carol Rendle, Trevor's wife. We were shown around the property which has magnificent views of the ocean, flowering trees and olive orchard. The eco friendly house is built of stucco covered straw bales which added to the pleasure. The shared main room offered lots of comfortable seating, beautiful music and a telescope for viewing the ocean. Next we were shown our room which is down a beautifully landscape covered walkway. The room has a balcony on one side overlooking the ocean and a private patio on the other side. The furnishings and decor were not only pretty, but very comfortable as well. There were fresh cut flowers, homemade cookies to die for, along with various teas and coffee. I loved the modern bathroom, again with a beautiful view of the ocean. We met in the lounge area for cocktails and hor d'oeuvres at 6:00 followed by a six course dinner. Carol made drinks of our choosing and brought out a tray of delicious hor d'oeuvres along with cheese and olives grown on the premises. We shared drinks and enjoyed a wonderful meal with another couple who were staying. A happy, warm and friendly evening. The Chef brought out each course and explained the essence and a little history of what we were about to eat.....a foodies dream!! All of the food was fresh and delicious. My taste buds were dancing! Carol is a gracious hostess and looked after all our needs.

Breakfast consisted of a choice of a hot meal, homemade jams, fresh fruits, yogurt and breads. Again top notch. The coffee was superb.. We spent our days enjoying the island's incredible beauty at every corner. I felt like I was in paradise. We stayed three nights, each night was as good as the last. I unfortunately left my magicjack computer phone connector at the lodge.Trevor, without hesitation, mailed it to me. I can't say enough about my trip to Great Barrier Island.

Thank you Trevor,Carol @ Earthsong Lodge for making a trip to paradise a little slice of heaven.

The hosts at Earthsong, Trevor and Carol Rendle, have the mix just right. They are hospitable without being unctuous, attentive without being intrusive, conversational but not monopolizing. And to top it off they have an exclusive lodge with top class accommodation and the only option for fine dining on Great Barrier Island, courtesy of Trevor's talents as a chef. In the world of luxury lodge experiences they offer the complete package just a 30 minute flight from Auckland. As a member of Luxury Lodges of New Zealand, Earthsong well and truly holds its own alongside market leaders such as Kauri Cliffs, Huka and Treetops. It is priced for that market but competitive for the quality of the experience.

We visited Earthsong recently for a weekend celebration and were captured by the place, the people and the experience.

The place: The Lodge is unashamedly exclusive. At most it caters to 3 couples at a time - we had it to ourselves which was very special - and is located overlooking Tryphena Harbour at the southern end of the Barrier. It is a straw bale/adobe construction designed to be warm in winter and cool in summer and is positioned for stunning views back to Auckland (on a very clear day) or across to the northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsular. Its electricity is generated on site (there is no mains grid supply on the Island) and the grounds are given over to produce which finds its way into the Lodge kitchen - olives, citrus, herbs and vegetables.

The accommodation has been cleverly designed to allow guests to enjoy outdoor seating and views at different spots depending on the prevailing wind. It is spacious for two, with a generous bathroom and capacious closet space (the dining experience warrants dressing for the occasion). Tea and coffee can be made in room, though with an eye to managing electricity usage hot water and milk are supplied in thermos flasks. Complimentary port is also available for a late night-cap or early morning starter!

Access to the Lodge is not for for the unintrepid. If you come by your own vehicle, be sure it is a 4x4 because the track into the Lodge grounds would try the most self respecting mountain goat. The hosts happily pick guests up from the air strip at Claris, but if you have the mind and the means there is a heliport on site. 4x4 vehicles can be hired from GBI Rentals, adjacent to the airstrip, and left at the lodge by arrangement.

The people: The owners/hosts seem genuinely to love what they have in Earthsong and sharing it with their guests. They know their community and are alive to the issues affecting it so if you are interested in knowing what is going on locally, you can get a first hand report . The community on the Island is only 850 strong outside summer. It is the sort of place where, if you are out driving, everyone waves to everyone else as their cars pass. In that sense it is a snapshot of what New Zealand was (or we think it was) 40 years ago. It may be because Earthsong offers such a contrast to those rustic aspects of life on the Island that the experience is enhanced. But that is also helped by the engagement with their guests of the hosts, who are traveled and interesting people, and who themselves love the finer things life can offer.

The experience: Apart from what the island has to offer (which is a great deal) the experience of Earthsong is built round the dinner table. No television means a wonderful opportunity each evening to reconnect with the charm of music, pre-dinner cocktails and conversation. Trevor Rendle produced two stunning 5 course meals for us during our stay and wonderful breakfasts as well. He explained his background in the airline industry and his experiences in Japan which have influenced his (originally self taught) style of cuisine. That influence shows in the marriage of seasonal tastes of European influence with Asian high points. So, you will find tastes such as sake, sesame, and mirin, cut with lime juice to create a sparkling and clean finish to classic dishes of lamb, duck or seafood. We found that a good many other lodges on the Island advertise that they can arrange a fine dining experience with advance notice - in fact they send their guests to Earthsong for dinner! We met a couple on the Saturday evening who had been referred in just this way and whose company we thoroughly enjoyed. The experience was a little strange - to meet a couple for the first time and the sit down to a superb meal together, but it worked and was a highlight of our stay.

It is not surprising that Earthsong is the only place on GBI which caters to fine dining. It requires talent, imagination and a passion for food to develop a style and quality of cooking that commands culinary respect. You will find that all at Trevor Rendle's table, combined with a cellar of fine wines to match. He has obviously conducted clandestine but long standing love affairs with Te Mata Coleraine and Stoney Ridge Larose, because Earthsong has a remarkable stock of each.

We returned to Auckland surprised and delighted that a weekend away could have been quite so perfect. The Earthsong experience is a reminder of just how lovely it can be to place an important celebration in the hands of two people who know what they are doing and are unstinting in their efforts to exceed expectations. I doubt that our hosts arranged it but as we left on Sunday a rare Pateke (Brown Teal) which, on arrival, Trevor had assured us was nesting at the bottom of the access road, emerged to bid us farewell, as if to be sure that the last promise of our Earthsong weekend was fulfilled.

We were given a wonderfull gift of two enchanting nights away from the rest of the world at Carol and Trevors place. The hospitality shown to us was second to none. The multi course meals were beautifully cooked and presented with Trevor describing how each dish was cooked.
We decided not to take up the offer of a 4x4 and just enjoyed the tranquillity of Earthsong.
We went for a walk to Tryphena wharf and stopped for cool drinks at the local cafe.It was a great experience which we thoroughly enjoyed and to top it off we met another couple and enjoyed their company and had lots of laughs during our stay.

An most unexpected taste of paradise. We had the most enjoyable weekend from the moment we left Auckland Airport. The flight over to Barrier was breathtaking. Barrier is a step back in time - no traffic to speak of, relaxed friendly people, beautiful beaches, bush and birds. We were met at the airport by Trevor from Earthsong which made getting there easy given one requires a four wheel drive up to Earthsong. The view from our lodge was stunning. It was so nice to feel so close to the bush with tui, fantails and wood pigeons swooping down to savor the delights in Carol's garden. Dinner was outstanding! Trevor is exceptionally skilled when it comes to flavours. Our only regret was that our stay was only for one night! I unhesitatingly recommend the Earthsong experience to you.

Room Tip: I'm sure all the rooms are good! There are only three so maybe either end so that you get the a...

This is a review of the dining experience, not the Lodge accommodation.
Bookings need to be made ahead for casual dining but this is well worth the experience. A 5 course pre-set menu is elegantly served with accompanying wines and a description of the dishes from Trevor, a very good chef. Carol kept us plied with wine and the conversation never waned. Canapes, wine and some of their very own cured olives started a memorable dinner. Carol had uplifted us from our car at the head of their driveway (on Medland Rd) and I don't think I would have liked to have driven that driveway with any wine in my system! It is designated 4 wheel drive and they are not kidding!
The house and dining area were cosy warm, the adobe walls being constructed from very thick straw bales for perfect insulation. The meals dishes offered a host of balanced flavours. As night time dining is extremely limited on Great Barrier Island during the winter months (like only one restaurant open at night), do consider a casual dining experience with Earthsong. You will not regret it. Not cheap, but no 5 course meal ever is and certainly for the quality and ambience this was excellent.
We will return.
