Reading the other reviews, things must have changed radically! We were on a deal offering 2 nights stay with a 3 course dinner and breakfasts included. Well - breakfast for both days came in a paper bag and was meagre and stale. The rooms were dirty - one of the rooms had a dead rat in their cupboard and we had to clean the shower before we wanted to use it. The 3 course meal offered no choice at all and most people left food on their plates rather than eat it. Any requests were met with ill disguised exasperation. We couldn't wait to leave.
On the upside, the location is beautiful, our bed was comfortable and most of the other people we met on the Island were fantastic.

There were no dead rats in any cupboards, and there never are. Our property is in the bush, so from time to time, the small native Kiore are on the roof.
We gave you the courtesy of driving you and your husband to the other side of the island (40mins), so you could have a rental car that afternoon.
We have never had any complaints about our food, in fact quite the opposite. Ang is a brilliant chef.
Your husband commented that everything was nice and clean, we know this, because we clean the rooms ourselves. Your husband also commented on what a great all-round service we provide, when I was filling up your rental car, on the wharf, in the rain.
He also said similar things to Ang, when she was sitting next to you at dinner.
Ang was most upset at the way you spoke to her from the outset, there is no need to talk down to people.
Our breakfasts are perfectly adequate continental breakfasts that we allow you to have at your leisure in the privacy of your own room.
The package that you purchased offers fantastic value, we are sorry that you missed your connecting flight and had to spend an extra couple of days on our beautiful island because of the inclement weather.

My stay at Great Barrier Lodge was truly magical, the setting is so romantic and you feel iscolated and disconnected from the rest of the island. The Staff at the Lodge made us feel very special by customising the menu to suit our requirements, not to mention that the food tasted absolutely fantastic. I would recommend Great Barrier Lodge to anyone who is looking for a relaxing get away. Amanda McTaggart

Awesome location with stunning view over the Whangaparapara Harbour. Geoff and Shane were the perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome. The selection of wines at the bar were excellent and so was the service. Our units were well set up with a selection of different beds to suit everyone. We had a deck outside our two adjoining units, with bbq tables which we sat at to eat all our meals. There was also a bbq on the deck to cook our delicious steak and sausages that Geoff ordered in for us. The lodge dinghy was great for the guys to fish in the harbour and the wharf was also a great place to fish and meet the friendly locals. The lodge kayaks were great and we made use of them most days by kayaking around the harbour. We also went snorkling, and walked along the rocks and got oysters. A fantastic holiday at an amazing place. Thanks guys, I will definitely be back. Jayne

Fantastic location - would be hard to find a better view anywhere. Geoff and lodge staff very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. Went over and above what you would expect of hosts. Thank you! Awesome meals. Made use of free kayaks, books and board games (unfortunately we had a couple of wet days).

The lodge sits on the edge of Whangaparapara Harbour and commands spectacular views across the valley and out to sea. Facilities include restaurant, bar, shop, computer with internet access and the free use of guest BBQs, fish filleting station, and kayaks. Several walking treks are minutes away for the more adventurous traveller, including a trek to natural hot springs.

The room was a good size, clean and provided all of the essentials you’d expect in a hotel room. The lodges water is supplied from a nearby spring which meant no water restrictions and great water pressure – not always available on the island. Generators/batteries power the lights and a morning/night supply of power to sockets meant we could charge our phones.

Geoff (the manager) and his team were more than friendly, ensuring we relaxed during our stay. They were very quick to offer up suggestions of things to do and see around the island and went the extra mile.

We ate in the lodge restaurant under the stars on the first night. The Lamb Shanks, which must have been local produce as they were enormous, deserve special mention but all of the food over the weekend was delicious. We choose to use the guest BBQ the following night and had Geoff (the manager), who turns out is an amazing chef, prepare our steaks for us. We came home a little bit wider than when we left.

There is so much to do on the island and we really enjoyed our stay at the Lodge. We are planning a return visit with friends in the near future.
