La Casona de Leymebamba

but possibly overpriced for the area since the room & breakfast were both simple with bread, fried eggs, and jam and butter w/ coffee or tea
But really nice family running the place.
They did have humming bird feeders around their small courtyard garden so look for the beautiful birds as they feed.

La Casona is a traditional home with a courtyard and rooms surrounding the area. Nelly and Julio live in the home and it is just like you are guests at their house and treated as such.
You can leave your things safely and even borrow things of theirs (like mud boots etc) they have internet but of course that is when Leyemebamba has power! There are few other options and for certain this is the cleanest and most friendly "high" end place. For Peru i woudl rank it 3-4 stars (nothing in Peru is 5 stars) due to the service and the cleanliness- it is amazing they can have such great ammenities so far from other areas.
There are plants and birds galore which in leyemebamba includes ROOSTERS so bring earplugs as you should always do when travelling in Spanish countries even for the car noise !The owners will arrange everything- taxis- dinners (or recommendations), activities and even guides. You cna use their phone for calls to the airport too!

Room Tip: Pick the rooms upstairs overlooking the gardens

We stayed one night at la Casona and were pleased.
Nice and quiet old house with pretty inner courtyard and garden.
Comfortable rooms with private bath and hot water (gas fired which is a great advantage as power cuts are frequent).
Excellent breakfast in the courtyard with hummingbirds flying over your head.
Excellent and very personnal service from the owners themselves.
Highly recommended although a little bit pricey for the place.

We stayed for only the one night but were made very welcome. The room was quite large, the water was hot and the bed comfortable. With a free breakfast, what more could you ask for the very reasonable cost. And with a 3D orchid garden as well! We took the bus to Cajamarca and the walk to the Plaza de Armas takes all of two minutes.

We stayed at the Casona on two separate occasions while traveling to and from Cajamarca. The rooms were clean, but rustic. We actually hit our knees on the bathroom door while sitting on the toilet, so don't expect roomy restrooms. But the service from Senor Julio was incredible, including a couple of dinners he whipped together at the last minute when other options were limited. The beds were comfortable, the surroundings very pleasant. Beware the early morning rooster alarms from neighborhood poultry, a routine issue in rural Peruvian towns, and wear ear plugs if that'll spoil your morning. Until they build a hotel up by the Museum, this is probably your best bet in this wonderful little town.

Leymebamba is an ideal stopover on the road from Cajamarca to Chachapoyas. It is a small place in a wonderfully scenic location, and interesting just to walk around and soak up the atmosphere.

At the time of my visit it still had a remote village feel about it, with the local people as curious about the tourists as vice versa. How that will change when the main road is paved is anyone's guess.

Meanwhile, it is a quiet and peaceful place to stop, and La Casona is an ideal place to stay. The rooms are plain, but comfortably furnished, and several (perhaps all?)of them have private facilities including a good hot shower.

There is a warm family welcome here and breakfast was ample, and nicely presented in the interior open courtyard. The hostal is about two blocks from the central plaza, which has a few shops and internet facility.

Highly recommended, either for a stopover, or a little longer to visit the attractions in the area.
