“Gotca Lodge welcoming, comfortable, and beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2012

Our party of four had reservations here our last night of a rough 6-day circuit, after visiting many sites within the spectacular northern Andes region. We pulled into this beautiful hotel about 10:30am, not having had breakfast where we'd slept the night before in order to ensure enough time to get to the falls. We asked if it was possible to eat a little something and the staff were immediately responsive. Within minutes, a table was ready on the patio in full view of the well kept grounds, the pool, two baby llamas, and of course, the Falls in the distance. We enjoyed a full breakfast despite the hour, and set out on horseback not long afterward, having already chosen our dinner entrees from among many options. The horseback trek and hiking were strenuous and challenging, but being right IN the Falls, up close and personal, was worth the pain! We even spotted Peru's national bird, the elusive bright orange Cock of the Rock, near the trail. We were exhausted and hungry upon our return and were delighted to enjoy HOT showers before sitting down to a our delicious meals without any delay. We'd ordered a variety of entrees, salad, wine, and dessert, all to our liking. Our server was conscientious and helpful. Later, in the tv room, we viewed our photos from the day on the flat screen and sipped delicious pina coladas.Thankfully, the beds were wonderfully comfy, the pillows soft, and the next morning we'd all had the best sleep of the entire trip. We agreed that our accommodations in this very remote spot in Peru, far away from any major city (and the village nearby so small there is not even an elementary school) were much above expectations. For those looking for luxury and fancy frills, don't come here. But, for anyone who enjoys being in one of the most beautiful and remote of locations, and who appreciates that the staff are trying their best to please the guests, this place is a real gem!! It is perfectly lovely AND comfortable, and, I might add, VERY CLEAN, To some, Gotca Andes Lodge may not rank as a Five Star hotel, but to me it will be one of my best memories of Peru.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a view. and open either to a balcony or the patio, I only saw two rooms but they...

We decided to stay at Gocta Lodge because of the reviews we read on TripAdvisor, and we were not disappointed. The lodge has a spectacular view of the falls, plus great accommodations. We had two rooms for 3 nights. Our three young boys stayed in one room while my wife and I had a suite. The rooms were spacious and very clean. The suite had space for all 5 of us to lounge (but it was setup to sleep 3). I have been all over Peru, and it was one of the largest rooms I have stayed in. In addition, each room faced the falls. We were lucky that it rained one day because more falls appeared. I counted at least 4 more. The multiple waterfalls and nearby clouds make for an amazing view. Also the food was very good. We ate well and the staff was extremely helpful. The people of the Chachapoyas area are very friendly. Plus the lodge is not too far off the main road, so it's a nice alternative versus staying in Chachapoyas if you want to hit the surrounding sites (but this means a least an hour or two one-way). My only issue with the lodge was a couple very cold showers, plus they were asking 20 soles for a small bundle of wood (if you wanted to use their fire pit). Yet the locals will sell you 5x for 10 soles or less, so I hope the lodge passes along the mark-up. Nonetheless we plan to be back w/ our friends.

When you arrive at the lodge, pass through the small lobby and step out onto the porch of the restaurant, you will be shocked by the beauty of the view. A few kilometers away, but completely unobstructed, two threads of water, one wide and clumsy and the other thin and targeted, fall gracefully from the ridge of an emerald cliff. The distant roar reminds you that these threads are three quarters of a kilometer tall. All 12 rooms have a view from their balcony or patio. Beds are ultra-comfortable, with thick soft quilts and plush pillows. Hot water is problematic, and food suffers, but the staff are ready to help with all issues. Be sure to spend at least three nights so that you can get in trips to spectacular outdoor natural and historical sites.

See also my review of sister property Rio Shilcayo (Tarapoto). I stayed at the three sister hotels during a north Peru birding trip. Gocta Lodge was definitely the pick, almost impossible to fault. Great view from the swimming pool (which is cooling after a walk to the falls) of the falls. The last few km of road to the lodge are a bit rough, but it is worth it. If you plan to walk to the falls, the "high road" (from San Pablo) is an easier route than the "low road" which leaves from near the lodge. Note that chickens do wander free around the property, so expect a free wake-up-call at sunrise!

I did know the Chachapoyas area since 1997, at that time I visited the Kuelap ruins and I loved them. It looks like in 2006 the Gotca waterfall became known to the rest of the world when a German traveler published their location and the fact that they are the third longest water drop in the world. The hotel that opened soon after that in Cocachimba, a quiet Peruvian village that seems to be taking advantage of the discovery of the waterfall as well.

The hotel is a jewel, with great service, outstanding rooms with modern and well equipped bathrooms. The best part of the hotel is the view of each room facing the waterfall, gorgeous!

The only but, if any, is that EDGE is the only internet you can get there, but it looked like they were installing a new 3G tower. For an "online" traveler like me is kind of important, although the beauty of the place will make you forget your iPhone

Room Tip: The rooms are huge, the suite sleeps 4 easily, but you could fit 4 king beds there. Take a visit t...

Spent 3 nights here as a base for exploring the region. The room was excellent with fantastic views of Gocta waterfall (as all rooms have), very modern bathroom, hot water as required, walk in shower and jacuzzi bath. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, we arrived late on the first night but had no problems ordering dinner from the good a la carte menu. The food is tasty and well presented. The hotel is in lovely grounds on the edge of a small village and has a pretty if not cold infinity style pool. During our stay we visited the waterfall itself - a lovely 90 minute trek through forest (horses are also available!), Quiocta caverns and the superb ruins at Kuelap - a long but spectacular drive but well worth it to see a stunning pre-Inca fortress perched precariously on a 3000m ridge with no other tourists to be seen.

Would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

The Gocta Lodge is an oasis in the region. It has been an important contribution to travelers interested in visiting the area, but falls short in some respects.
Although the staff is friendly, they lack thorough preparation. They need more training in order to be able to provide a good service. The food is just OK, not many plates to choose from and needs a more healthy offer.
Rooms are clean and cozy. Very well arranged. Hot water is a real problem. It is not really "hot", it only gets warm and at a minimum; I think they have some problem with the installation that they must correct.
Other than that, it is an astonishing place to visit for the location and the natural beauty. Great effort in giving us this place, but there is still some work ahead to polish this gem.
