Kuelap is an amazing place to visit. Everyone goes to Machu Picchu, but this is almost just as good - being pre-Incan rather than Incan. It's not easy to get to, but that's the point, and adds to the charm. There is a long drive up a gravel road.
There is a 15 minute walk up to the city, and the altitude may mean you need to take your time. It's a lot simpler and less touristy than Machu Picchu, and there are stalls selling drinks and snacks at the top before you go into the city. It's less well restored, but again, that adds to the experience.
There is a new visitor's centre which provides some helpful guidance, although our guide was very good.

An amazing complex, especially if you're interested in Pre-Columbian history. I'd give a little background on the site, but a) previous reviews have done it and b) this link is better than I am anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuelap . The walls are incredible (up to 20m high), the sheer number of perfectly circular structures is fascinating, and the facts that you can walk basically everywhere (other than whatever spot happens to have ongoing restoration work) and that the site is overgrown (so it feels kind of like you're Indiana Jones) is awesome. There are also still some carvings of human faces and animals and deities left on the bricks. Last, the setting of the ruins, on a ridge at 3100m above sea level, surrounded by forested mountains draped in mist and clouds (Kuelap is in the northern cloud forest, where the Amazon comes up into the highlands) is stunning. It's an awesome site and well worth the long trip to the Chachapyas region alone (though there are many other reasons to visit Chachapoyas).

This place is seriously cool. I've been four times now, and I'd go again. It's a massive stone citadel with 30-foot walls crowning the top of a mountain, looking down on the beautiful Utcubamba river valley. Packed wall-to-wall with temples, roundhouses and military watchtowers, Kuelap is the finest example of the height of the pre-Incan civilizations of the northern Andes. And now, with the new museum/visitor's center and the soon-to-be-built cable lift, the trip will be even more enjoyable!

AMAZING. Fortress is astounding. Best part is that you can literally walk into every different layer - you're not just looking at it from the outside. The guide was fantastic and spoke at least 4 languages, which makes an enormous difference when trying to pick up on the history of the place.
