Having just finished a feast of gazpacho, rounds of bread and chèvre put under the broiler, duck breast, risotto with chanterelles and onions, homemade bread, homemade chutney, assorted cheeses, rhubarb cream and fresh madeleines from Charles who is serving the food as he prepares the plates and Laure hands them around, this charming couple has brought us into their lovely property like family members. Obviously this is no ordinary B&B. This was really a factory before it's transformation. The two waterfalls across from the front of the building are lit at night and with the river on the building's other side have a magical effect that may lull you to sleep. And once you find it, it is only 15 minutes by car from Montolieu. Laure is French and Charles American. My French isn't all that good, but it imagine I can almost completely understand their French. Must be part of the magic of this place.

Room Tip: You can hear water from all the rooms I think. Rooms aren't numbered. My room, first on left d...

Thank you so much for your fabulous comments! We are so pleased that your stay was so memorable but, keep in mind that, a large part of the magic of this place is, the people that come to visit. Again, we thank you for your time taken in writing and also your choice of coming to visit us and hope that, soon, our paths may cross again!

My partner and I spent 3 nights at Forge de Montolieu, and if I wasn't that we had to return to work we would have spent the week! The Forge, it's stunning garden and most off the welcome of Laure and Charles was wonderful. We needed a quiet getaway and we found it! Our days were spent relaxing by the river and swimming in the falls that were surrounded by dragonflies and the biggest hydrangeas I had ever seen. Charles suggested some great restaurants and one of the evening we had dinner at the Forge....prepared by Chef Charles himself! The rooms were clean and spacious and we drifted off to sleep each night with the sound of the river rolling under our window. This place is the perfect hideaway from a busy lifestyle and a quiet retreat that is well worth the trip to Montolieu. I look forward to visiting again! Thanks Charles and Laure and tell the dogs we say hello ;)

Our visit to the Forge was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our recent trip to southern France. Since returning home we have been recommending it to friends and family, although the urge to keep it to ourselves is very strong because it is such a unique place. The accommodation and its surroundings are magnificent, full of character and history. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the size of the property allows plenty of scope for exploration amongst the trees and along the river. Our hosts were extremely welcoming and were very easy company. Lovely friendly dogs and typically aloof cats enhanced the relaxed atmosphere. On our second night we enjoyed the most wonderful meal, which incorporated fruit and flowers from the garden as well as local produce. Charles took great care in preparing the meal; it was beautifully presented and delicious. It was a real treat. We really hope to be able to visit again.

We arrived tired and hot,and within minutes were warmly greeted and installed in our ( large and comfortable and fresh) room, with our very own waterfall just outside our window. Friendly hosts, friendly menagerie(dogs and cats) leafy walks by the picturesque river, fabulous food(really)
If that wasn't enough the village of Montolieu with it's twenty eight odd bookshops, and its friendly and helpful inhabitants, many of whom were artists and musicians, was charming, and we would highly recommend the forge as a place to stay!

Room Tip: If you like the sound of running water, ask for a waterfall room

Thank you so much for your visit as well as the time spent writing such a wonderful review. Since you have left, I have had many villagers ask how you both are getting along and I think that the time spent here touched more than a few. In any case, we thank you again and do hope to see you again soon - do take care and stay in touch!

After a long, hot day of driving 8 hours from Brittany down to the southern part of France, what better impression could one have of tranquillity, beauty, soft light filtering through the multitude of shrubs, trees, flowers, and the heady sound of rushing water cascading from more than 3 different sources that can be found at La Forge de Montolieu ? As we entered through the long, gravel drive, an imposing three storey stone building with glass pane windows (learned later on that the window panes date from the 18th century !) as well as the joyful tumble of 4 lovely dogs came to greet us! Also to learn later on that the 4 dogs are chaperoned by two rather large cats. For those of you who are animal shy, they are extremely well behaved and listen to their masters. But it is rather laudable to know that some of the animals were rescued from an ugly demise at the animal shelter. Surrounding the "forge" were lovely, manicured park grounds, a tinkling fountain, and a greenhouse filled with exotic plants, spices and two birds. This was the perfect reflection of the attention our hosts, Charles & Laure were to extend to us during our 4 night stay. Private rooms are on the ground floor and 4 lovely rooms/apartments are to be found on the 1st floor all with integrated and fully renovated bathrooms, Italian stlye. To our surprise, we had the Master Suite where I simply felt so at home. Clean, comfortable linens in earthen colours, lovely old wood furniture, fantastic, huge bed and little touches such as La Marseillaise soap and hand cream in the bathoom completed the feeling. It was a corner suite so views on both sides and always that soothing sound of the water cascading down. My daugther had a cosy twin room with a small secrétariat and small but lovely and efficient bathroom equipped with a huge shower. Again stunning views out the windows and the morning sunlight to start the day off right. Breakfast was outside in the park with a lovely teak table and chairs with two kinds of homemade breads, jams, yoghurts, fruit, everything you need or can request. Charles is a chef extraordinaire with a spice cabinet holding more than 300 different spices and we had the pleasure of dining outside one night with an exotic, mélange salad containing probably more than 10 different ingredients, flavours, tastes even edible flowers! A pork roast was not just a "pork roast" but a flavourful, rich and dense experience. And of course a "clin d'oeil" to my American origins (and Charles') with a pecan pie to finish off. Charles is also an extremely talented musician so there was a drum jam session with the girls after dinner! However, let's not forget the maîtresse of the house as Laure was a quiet but steady influence in contrast to Charles' exuberance always more than willing to share her extensive knowledge since she is the owner of the book store "La Lettre Vôlée" in Montolieu. Finally, there is the pièce de résistance to be discovered but I won't tell you about it, you must simply come, stay and see for yourself.

Wow, how wonderful to see that you were happy here. This review touches us, not only because you were happy but, also because you know about the business... Regardless of the rest, we can not begin to thank you for the wonderful moments that we spent together - reminding all what vacations should be about. I thank you you for your frank and honest insight into what people experience when they come here and I hope that your vacation allowed you to take a break and hit the ground running back on your own turf. In any case, your review is one of the most exhaustive and glowing and, hopefully, others shall find the same moments that you discovered here... Laure and I thank you for the wonderful moments we spent together and the time it took to let others know about this place. We hope to see you soon and send our best wishes to all...

Again, many thanks,
Charles

Laure and Charles are two of the most welcoming hosts that we encountered on our recent drive through Southwest France. In 4 short years they have transformed La Forge into a premier B & B with comfortable well appointed rooms and beautiful grounds. Upon request Charles will provide an evening meal from local, fresh ingredients. In fact, some of the ingredients come from his extensive herb garden close to the kitchen itself. While Charles served our meal, Laure ate with us and we all enjoyed conversation about personal experiences and their life at La Forge and the adjacent village of Montolieu. In addition to providing B & B, Laure is the owner of one of the 15 bookshops in Montolieu, known worldwide as a French Book Town. Even if books are not your reason for being in the area, stay at La Forge still and you will be glad that you did.
