This is indeed a magical place not standing on a rise but tucked away below eye level in rolling Welsh countryside further cloaked by woodland this welsh castle is unique-so cleverly concealed that invading enemies would pass by unaware of it's presence -strategically important in this border location the first historical heritage site of it's type in North Wales to this day stil goes largely unnoticed - (shame on Flintshire CC) but it's hidden location is amazing as when there it is devoid of any trappings of later civilisation (housing, roads, street lights none to be seen!) and so one can easily be transported back in time and with a little guidance and dramatic embellishment it is easy for youngsters to imagine battles and life at that time! (eroded slightly over the decades I have visited by the irritating "improvements" and 'elf n safety' contributions. My young brother now a "sophisticated" mid 40's guy still recounts our visits in his youth when I told stories of life long ago (as if I knew!). Thanks to the inability of our "leaders" to celebrate the rich history within it's curtilage the varied aspects and significance of Flintshire (the gateway to Wales) goes largely ignored - Romans Vikings Seafarers Miners Industrialists all recognised what today's incumbents ignore- but it is here to enjoy for free! Along with a rich culture heritage and identity Ewloe Castle is just a starter on the menu of Wales's offerings in Flintshire - or you can just pass by "unknowingly" - such irony! Do stay awhile and enjoy!
