We have stayed at the Old Hall many times over a number of years and we have witnessed 1st hand the fantastic transformation Rick and his staff have achieved with this great Dog friendly B&B. The rooms are 1st rate, spacious and well appointed. The evening meals in the restaurant are fabulous! I recommend you try the 30day steak. The bar has a good range of well kept Real Ale and a huge selection of single malts. Breakfast is served in the Edwardian Tea Room again good choice and high quality You must try the Derbyshire Breakfast. Overall a brilliant experience. Rick you are a Star and your staff do you credit. We will be back soon.

This was the closest but to our campsite. The food was much nicer than I thought it would be and a good choice. The staff were very friendly. We had two main courses and two puddings which came to about £32. Portions weren't huge but the food was very well presented and flavoursome.

Based on the meal that I had, I'm not sure what the aim of this hotel/pub is exactly.
We sat in the bar area so you would expect the meal to be wholesome and plentiful, as most pub meals are. Then there are those 'gastro pubs' that serve more pretentious meals, you know what I mean, lots of design on a plate, but little food to actually eat. This pub also has a dedicated restaurant area, so the food seems to fall inbetween the types above.
The 48 hour roast pork was delicious, although a little dry, served with black pudding mash. Unfortunately the roast pork was a little dry and the sauce served with the meal soon ran out, so more had to be ordered before the meal could be finished. The mash was tasty, but the addition of a few fresh vegetables would have been nice - there weren't any.
So if you are looking for a hearty pub meal to satisfy a large appetite, or a 'gastro' meal that is all presentation and perfection, then you may find what you receive here leaves you ' caught in the middle' being neither one nor the other.
However, if you are whisky drinker and enjoy a dram, then the list of single malt whiskies on the menu and behind the bar is the most extensive that I have ever seen. The beer is also ' well kept', so the overall experience does have its good points.

Had one meal in this pub in the evening and breakfast before the drive home after our holiday.
The appearance of this pub is clean and inviting. There is a reasonable menu to choose from during the evening however most dishes seemed to come with chips. There was quite a good children's selection on the menu as well. This appears more of a pub than restaurant and orders were taken at the bar not by waiting staff.
Overall the meal was enjoyable and well cooked. Service was fast and all the staff were polite but not overly friendly. Food also seemed a little more expensive than some places we ate although the food was not markedly better.
Was also visited the hotel on our last morning in the area to eat breakfast before our drive home. Breakfast is served in a side annex and there was a good selection on the menu. The staff were very accommodating when it came to ordering allowing one member of our party to order extras for her breakfast. The breakfast prices were competitive with other breakfasts that we would normally buy when home at local cafes. The food was also of good quality.
Overall I would visit this hotel/pub again for both an evening meal or breakfast.

I have recently returned from a 2 night stay at the Old Hall Hotel with my husband. Our room, the Ladybower Suite was excellent and couldn't be faulted. Our breakfast was lovely and again perfect, definately 5 star. However the only criticism is the lack of fresh vegetables with our evening meals. We ate in the restaurant twice, The liver and bacon casserole was excellent as was the steak and ale pie, but we only got peas as vegetables. These meals would have been fantastic with a selection of nicely cooked fresh vegetables. This is why I can only give this hotel a 4 star rating and not a 5.
